Hairdresser reveals how to get Kate Middleton's signature bouncy curls and 'critical' step

Daily Mirror30-04-2025

A leading hairdresser has revealed the secret to getting the same bouncy and sleek waves as Kate Middleton, as the Princess showed off her new hairstyle while in Scotland
The Princess of Wales has been spotted looking glamorous on a Scottish island tour with Prince William, and fans are loving her new hairdo. Kate was seen with a new 'bronde' look, with soft blonde highlights woven through her brunette locks as she visited the Isle of Mull yesterday.
Kate, 43, has ditched the signature dark brunette style she's been recognised with for the past 20 years, and has gone for blonde highlights ahead of summer. The mother-of-three also styled it with some perfectly cascading curls - another of her signature looks.

After fans went wild over Kate's new do, we spoke with hair expert and award-winning hairdresser Adem Oygur, of Adem London, on how you can also achieve this look.

" Kate Middleton 's signature bouncy curls are a masterclass in classic, high-gloss glamour with a modern edge. Recreating this look requires a focus on structure, volume, and long-lasting movement and it's all built on healthy, well-prepped hair," Adem explained.
He advised starting by cleansing the hair with a volumising shampoo and a lightweight conditioner to avoid residue that can weigh the hair down. "Towel-dry gently and apply a root-lifting spray or mousse - something like a heat-activated volumiser works best for fine to medium textures. Distribute it evenly using a wide-tooth comb to ensure lift without stiffness."
Adem then said to 'rough-dry' the hair to around 70% and then section it into quadrants. "Using a medium to large round brush (ideally ceramic or boar-bristle for added tension and shine), begin blow-drying from the nape upward."
The expert's top tip is to direct the airflow from root to tip in order to smooth the cuticle and create a reflective surface. "For added volume and bend, roll each section under while drying and clip it into a barrel shape to cool and set," he added. "Once the hair is fully dry and cool, use a large-barrel curling tong and work in horizontal sections, curling away from the face for a lifting effect.
"Keep each curl uniform in direction for a cohesive wave pattern. Wrap each section around the tong and hold for approximately 8–10 seconds, then immediately pin it in place to cool. This step is critical—cooling the curls in shape helps 'memorise' the curl pattern for longer-lasting hold and bounce."

Once all the curls are set and cooled - around 10 to 15 minutes - remove all of the pins and "gently brush through the curls with a boar bristle brush or a soft paddle brush" as this helps to break up the definition slightly to give that iconic softness and movement. Adem then advised: "Lightly backcomb at the crown if additional volume is desired, then smooth over with a tail comb for polish.
"Finish with a flexible hold hairspray to maintain bounce without rigidity. For added dimension and a healthy finish, a mist of lightweight shine spray or serum through the mid-lengths and ends enhances that signature Kate glow."
Adem said for those who struggle to keep curls in their hair, mist each section lightly with a thermal setting spray before curling and a cool-shot blast with your hairdryer at the end can help seal the style further without disturbing the shape.

"Ultimately, this look is about balance - volume without frizz, curl without stiffness, and polish without looking overdone. It's a timeless style that flatters all face shapes and works beautifully from day to night."
To get Kate's new colour, Adem said it looks like a combination of "fine balayage and soft face-framing highlights has been used." He said the balance of the two gives a seamless finish, and "I think her colourist has likely focused on hand-painted techniques to ensure a natural finish without any harsh contrast.
"By working within the 'bronde' spectrum, Kate's new look balances warm honey and caramel tones with deeper brunette lowlights. It's been done to perfection, and the overall effect is effortlessly sun-kissed, without losing the depth that flatters her complexion."

Lewis Capaldi has shared his long-awaited comeback single – new song Survive marking the Scottish singer's first new music for 16 months. The West Lothian chart-topper dropped the song at midnight on Thursday, sending his huge fanbase into a frenzy. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A typically anthemic number, the release is presumably timed to coincide with his rumoured big stage return at Glastonbury tonight, two years after his breakdown on the Pyramid Stage. 'Most nights I fear that I'm not enough, I've had my share of Monday mornings when I can't get up', he sings in a huge, hair-raising and brutally honest track that addresses mental health challenges of self-doubt and despair. In typical Capaldi fashion, however, he comes out swinging in a chorus full of defiance: 'I swear to God I'll survive, if it kills me to, I'm gonna' get up and try, if it's the last thing I'll do'. Survive also sees the 28-year-old reunited with close collaborator Romans, who co-wrote his global megahit, Someone You Loved, that extraordinarily turned 10x Platinum earlier this year. The new track arrives off the back of three Scottish shows in May that saw the singer return to the stage as a guest of mental health charity CALM, in celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week. With no pressure, and no level of expectation, the shows allowed Capaldi the space to gauge his comfort and emotional response before returning to the spotlight – a move which ended up proving nothing short of a triumph. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Capaldi's last release, the hit-packed album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, scored him his second UK number 1 album, creating another three UK No.1 singles, Pointless, Wish You The Best and the Platinum-certified Forget Me, working with hitmakers including Max Martin (Taylor Swift, The Weeknd), Malay (Lorde, Frank Ocean), and longtime collaborator Phil Plested (James Bay, Bastille). The album also gained widespread critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, New York Times, NME, Rolling Stone, GQ, Stereogum and many more. It also topped airplay charts, smashing an impressive 95,000 units, outselling the rest of that week's Top 10 combined, as well as outselling first week sales of his own monumental debut album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent. In April 2023, Capaldi explored how the pressures of fame have affected him mentally and physically in the documentary Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now. The documentary shot straight to the top of the Netflix chart, making it the most watched film on the platform since its release. It also won an National Television Award (NTA) in the authored documentary category and has been nominated for a Grammy for best music film. Survive lyrics: How long 'til it feels Like the wounds finally starting to heal How long 'til it feels Like I'm more than a spoke in a wheel Most nights I fear That I'm not enough I've had my share of Monday mornings when I can't get up But when hope is lost And I come undone I swear to God I'll survive If it kills me to I'm gonna get up and try If it's the last thing I do I've still got something to give Though it hurts sometimes I'm gonna get up and live Until the day that I die I swear to God I'll survive How long 'til you know That in truth you know nothing at all

I saw Lana Del Rey at Glasgow's Hampden Park

US superstar Lana Del Rey told her Scottish fans they were special as she played to a packed crowd at Hampden Park tonight. The singer opened the door to her home, quite literally with a house on stage, to thousands of adoring fans at Scotland's national stadium. And while this spot normally houses the tartan army, it was Lana's own army of fans that was ready and willing to take direction from the star. (Image: Roberto Ricciuti) Armed with their Lana merchandise, they screamed in unison as the beauty smiled from ear to ear to say, 'You are so special. You are so special, Glasgow.' Diving into Henry, Come On, those delicate vocals echoed around the arena, and she sounded simply enchanting. A cover of Tammy Wynette's classic Stand By Your Man quickly followed, allowing her to put her own stamp on the country classic. While the Rick-Rubin produced Ride - taken from the 2012 album Paradise - delighted fans who rhymed off the lyrics with ease, before Video Games sent the crowd into a frenzy. Her vocals even took the spotlight when she did a section of the song a cappella, she sounded phenomenal. Those who live and breathe her lyrics and music. Many travelled from all over, queued for hours so that they could secure the perfect spot to embrace that Lana magic. And it's easy to see why, the 40-year-old New Yorker draws you in from the moment she steps on stage, she oozes charisma. Young and Beautiful - which featured in the 2013 Baz Luhrmann movie The Great Gatsby - was a moment to remember before she amped up the atmosphere further with Summertime Sadness and Born to Die. This trio of tracks took the show to its pinnacle before she introduced new song 57.5 - a reference to her millions of monthly listeners on Spotify - which caused a bit of a stir during its debut earlier this year when she confessed she kissed country star Morgan Wallen in the lyrics. But Lana spread her magic to those who matter the most as she stepped off the stage to pose for selfies and sign autographs for her dedicated fans at the front.

Gogglebox's Rev. Kate slams 'exploitative' show after horrible toll on family

Former Gogglebox cast member Reverend Kate Bottley, who appeared on the Channel 4 show with her husband Graham Bottley from 2014 to 2016, has spoken about the experience Former Gogglebox cast member Reverend Kate Bottley has described the TV show as "quite intrusive" and "consensual exploitation". She has now spoken about her experience almost a decade on from her decision to leave. Kate, now 50, appeared on the Channel 4 show alongside her husband Graham Bottley and their late dog Buster from 2014 to 2016. The couple, who have two children, welcomed cameras into their home in Blyth during the several series that they took part in the long-running reality TV show. ‌ Since leaving Gogglebox nine years ago, Kate has featured on several other shows including Songs of Praise and Pilgrimage: the Road To Santiago. The Church of England vicar also presents BBC Radio 2 's Good Morning Sunday. ‌ Kate reflected on her rise to fame on Gogglebox in an episode of the Walking the Dog podcast released yesterday. She said on the podcast: "I wish I'd known how much it took over our life for two and a half years. It's reality TV. It's by its nature ... it's consensual exploitation. [...] It was quite intrusive, really. But y'know we consented to that intrusion." Speaking about her family, she went on to say: "My kids spent two and a half years sat in their bedrooms every Tuesday and Thursday night or whatever nights they came to film. My kids didn't have friends round for a lot [of it and] didn't have help with their homework. Things like that." Kate also claimed that they "got paid very little". She said: "They paid but I cooked two nights a week for the crew." She then said that she offered to cook because Graham "won't eat takeaways" and she didn't want to be filmed eating. She said: "All the money we got from it went on the electricity, the internet connection that they were using and the food and being hospitable to six people in my home two nights a week. It's a vicarage as well - I should be hospitable. "We should be sharing our homes with people and eating food together and stuff. So y'know it was a good two and a half years but we couldn't have done any more with it, I don't think. It got to the point where we were just a bit overwhelmed." ‌ Asked if that was why she left, she said on the podcast: "Yeah." She however then claimed that she wasn't able to take part in other TV shows whilst under contract for Gogglebox despite wanting to "have a go" at other opportunities. She continued by saying: "Also, there's quite tight exclusivity and rightly so because if you're filming ordinary people sat on their sofa watching TV you can't then have those people on the TV. It sort of breaks the fourth wall too much." Kate said she was offered shows like Would I Lie To You? - which she has since appeared on - but wasn't allowed to take part because Gogglebox "wouldn't let you do it". She said: "There was stuff coming in that I wanted to have a go at which I just wasn't able, contractually, to do." The former cast member then revealed that she gave an "excuse" when she left Gogglebox in 2016. She said: "And it so happened that it came around the time Ruby was doing her GCSEs so the excuse we gave was 'we're gonna take some time away while she does her exams'."
