Film reviews trash the Weeknd's ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow' as ‘self-indulgent' and a ‘feature-length ego-stroke'
What do you get when you put red-hot stars like the Weeknd, Barry Keoghan, Jenna Ortega, and Riley Keough in a movie together? Apparently, a "self-indulgent" mess and a "feature-length ego-stroke," say the critics — ouch.
The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) cowrote and produced the new film Hurry Up Tomorrow, which serves as a companion piece to his sixth studio album, released in January. Trey Edward Shults (Waves) directed and cowrote the Lionsgate picture, which is being described as a "musical psychological thriller." Reza Fahim (The Idol) is the third cowriter.

Hurry Up Tomorrow has a tepid 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 30 score at Metacritic, making it one of the worst-reviewed movies of 2025 so far. For comparison's sake, the reigning Razzie "winner" for Worst Picture, Madame Web, earned an 11 percent last year on the all-important Tomatometer, and instantly became the butt of countless jokes.
The film's plot follows the Weeknd as a fictionalized version of himself, who becomes resentful and depressed after his girlfriend breaks up with him. After the musician encounters a mysterious stranger, he embarks on a psychedelic journey that causes him to question everything he knows about life. Here's the trailer:
The Weeknd is no stranger to poor reviews, as his 2023 television drama The Idol received a 19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It starred Lily-Rose Depp as a pop idol who has a complex relationship with the Weeknd's unsavory cult leader character. But The Idol had the last laugh at the Emmys, winning the trophy for Best Choreography.
While the Weeknd has yet to respond to the reviews for Hurry Up Tomorrow, he said the following in 2023 about critics who trashed his tunes: "I'm not responsible for how someone feels about my music." The artist is a four-time Grammy winner for the songs "Hurricane" and "Earned It (Fifty Shades Of Grey)," and the albums Starboy and Beauty Behind The Madness.

Hurry Up Tomorrow opened in U.S. theaters on May 16. It has a running time of one hour, 45 minutes, and is rated R for language throughout, drug use, some bloody violence, and brief nudity.

Magnolia plans to release the film theatrically (available in Dolby Atmos) on August 8. 'House of the Dragon' season 3 will go experimental with a concept episode
Westeros fans are already excited about the promise of "House of the Dragon" season 3, the next installment of the "Game of Thrones" prequel series. Alas, we still don't have a release date (we'll keep you posted the second we hear!), but news of filming kicking off in England and new actors joining the cast should be enough to hold George R. R. Martin stans over for awhile. Still, we're chomping at the bit until Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and the rest of our favorite "House of the Dragon" characters are back on screen. That's especially so now that showrunner Ryan Condal has teased a special high-concept episode to come in the new season. While speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the showrunner revealed that one episode of the third season will be a more "conceptual" and "character-driven" installment than "House of the Dragon" fans have seen from the HBO fantasy series so far. 'We got to have a little fun this season, and there's a conceptual episode that I'm really excited about that [Sara Hess] wrote, and that's all I'm gonna say about it," Condal shared during the podcast appearance. "It isn't in the traditional vernacular of what we have laid out. It's very character-driven, I think it's really great and I'm really excited to see it rendered.' Exactly which character's journey will be on the receiving end of this more experimental narrative style in the new episodes is so far unknown. Condal played coy when it came to naming names, as well as how that treatment will play out visually onscreen. But it will be interesting getting a more introspective and emotional look into a character's mindset, especially as the turmoil of a major war rages around them. Outside of the more focused, interior look into the personalities of "House of the Dragon," the third season is set to go bigger and better with its storylines. In a previous interview with Gold Derby, Condal said: "Season 2 is huge. Season 3 is huger, in many ways. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "There are, by my quick count on stage, four major events from the book that we get to adapt and realize in three dimensions in this season. That's really exciting on a scope-and-scale perspective, and I think it's the thing the show does really well." ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' Season 2 Reunion Announced
God (Hulu) has answered my prayers (angry demands). We're getting a Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 2 reunion. And the first look photos are already causing drama. Hulu announced the reunion on Thursday, June 5, less than a month after season 2 premiered. 'After a shocking end to season 2, host Nick Viall reunites all of #MomTok and #DadTok to uncover secrets and scandals, never-before-seen footage, and a surprise announcement in the first-ever reunion special for The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,' reads the press release. But who is 'all of #MomTok'? Based on the first look photos teasing the reunion, it looks like Taylor Frankie Paul, Jen Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Taylor, Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Matthews, Whitney Leavitt, and Miranda McWhorter will all be in attendance. As for their group nemesis Demi Engemann, she's nowhere in sight. Could this mean she's done with the show for good? Demi's absence shouldn't come as a huge shock. She stormed out of a #MomTok meeting in the season 2 finale after failing to kick Taylor out of the group, saying she needed a break. But is Demi really done with #MomTok, or could she return? Before you read too much into her absence, it's important to note that Whitney, who last we saw was newly voted back into #MomTok, is taking part in the reunion, as is Miranda, who has yet to be voted on at all. So it looks like despite her #MomTok status, Demi made a conscious choice to skip the event. Read into that what you will... Meanwhile, most of the #MomTok husbands and/or partners will also be participating. A sneak peek at the reunion shows six of the #DadTok members sitting in chairs behind the main cast, including Taylor's ex Dakota Mortensen, Mayci's husband Jacob Neely, Mikayla's husband Jace Terry, Jen's husband Zac Affleck, Whitney's husband Conner Leavitt, and Jessi's husband Jordan Ngatikaura. (That's one way to put those Jessi cheating rumors to bed!) Finally, the show will be hosted by Bachelor alum Nick Viall, who has had most of the cast on his podcast, The Viall Files. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 2 reunion will air July 1 on Hulu. I will be seated.
