ATO super warning for 200,000 Aussies ahead of looming deadline: 'On the hook for penalties'

Small businesses have been warned to start making arrangements ahead of a popular superannuation system closing down by mid-next year. The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) is used by roughly 200,000 Australians to pay and process their workers' super entitlements. But it will be shut down by July 1, 2026 with the introduction of Payday Super. Business owners not on the SBSCH have until October 1 this year before sign-ups are permanently closed, and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) said all users need to get their affairs in order. "Existing users are encouraged to take steps now to transition to alternative options," it said. "These include reviewing your existing software and payroll packages, which may already include super functions, or looking at options offered by super funds, commercial clearing houses, or other payroll software or providers." RELATED ATO $2,548 tax refund cash boost for 2.6 million Aussies Hidden $3,000 per year cost of cashless revolt as record number of banknotes hoarded Tradies, nurses, cleaners declared workers least likely to be overtaken by AI What is the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House? The SBSCH is available to small businesses with 19 or fewer employees that have an annual turnover of less than $10 million. It's a free service from the ATO that ensures all compulsory super contributions meet government standards and are paid on time. Instead of firing off each individual payment for each employee, the SBSCH lets business owners complete the task in a single payment, which helps them save potentially hours throughout the year. At the moment, owners are required to pay super to staff-nominated accounts once a quarter. The SBSCH also provides a full history of superannuation payments in case an employee or owner needed to check is it shutting down? Payday Super is set to be brought in at the start of the next financial year, which will see workers paid their superannuation every time they receive their wage, instead of once a quarter. The policy, which hasn't yet been mandated, is aimed at cutting down on unpaid super, with $5.2 billion failing to be transferred properly to workers in 2021-22, according to the ATO. As a result, the SBSCH will be redundant under the new system, as it will be much harder for the SBSCH to pool all payments into one transaction that will become much more frequent. These compulsory superannuation payments will have to be moved into payroll software, commercial clearing houses, or services offered by super funds, which further causes the SBSCH to become obsolete. Payday Super is expected to kick in on July 1 next year, and the SBSCH's final day is set to be June 30. Concerns erupt as SBSCH enters twilight era Tony Greco, senior tax advisor at the Institute of Public Accountants, is worried about the burden that will be placed on small business owners once the SBSCH is sunsetted. 'The Small Business Clearing House is a no-cost option for many small businesses that offers one very important additional benefit," he said. "Only the SBSCH offers protection from substantial SG penalties if there are any delays in the money dropping into the employees' nominated superannuation account." 'If employers use any other commercial clearing house, they are on the hook for penalties if there are any hiccups in administration between the clearing account and the money received in the employee's super account." He explained that business owners end up being fined for delayed or missed super payments even when they're the result of factors outside of their control. There could be a major system outage at a commercial clearing house, but the buck would stop at the business owner. Greco called for the ATO to ensure small businesses receive adequate help in transitioning to a new system well before the June 30 deadline to ensure owners aren't affected by the change.

King Green releases depressing statement following UFC 319 withdrawal – ‘I can't walk'

Bummer. Earlier today, 27-fight Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran King Green withdrew from UFC 319, scheduled for this weekend (Sat., Aug. 16, 2025), due to an injury. He was set to face fellow UFC veteran Diego Ferreira in the 'Prelims' headliner at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Green posted a statement on his Instagram Story hours after the news broke 'I worked so hard to get here, so hard. I went through a lot of bullshit to get here,' Green said. 'Back in the day, I've had pull-outs, but somewhere along the line, I said I would never pull out of a fight again. If I have to f—king limp my ass there, I'll limp myself into the cage, but I won't pull out.' 'This one is a little different. I can't even f—king walk, guys,' Green continued. 'If I had a broken hand, I would say anything, I'd just fight. I'm sorry to anyone that I let down. I let myself down even more; it just sucks. I got people who look up to and need me. I got the crutches here, it is what it is…I'm really sorry.' Green (32-17-1) is riding a two-fight losing streak, getting finished in the first round in both of them. In his most recent outing, he was on the end of one of the best knockouts of 2025, a spinning wheel kick from Mauricio Ruffy (watch highlights) The exact injury that Green is dealing with is currently unknown at this time. Is Lucid Preparing to Battle Rivian? The Gravity X Concept Suggests an Off-Road Trim Is in the Works

Lucid revealed the Gravity X concept today ahead of its public debut at this weekend's P. The concept features off-road accessories including a sleek roof rack, protective skid plates, and all-terrain tires. The Gravity X also wears orange accents, tow hooks integrated into the bumpers, and etched topographical maps of Big Sur and Death Valley on the hood. Although supply chain constraints have slowed the rollout of Lucid's second vehicle, the Gravity, the mid-size electric SUV represents a significant moment for the nascent automaker. Not only did the 1070-hp Dream Edition become the quickest SUV we've tested over the quarter-mile run, but the Grand Touring is capable of up to 450 miles of range and packs possibly the roomiest three-row configuration on the market. Now Lucid seems to be weighing an expansion of the Gravity's abilities, revealing the off-road-focused Gravity X concept during Monterey Car Week. The Gravity X, which Lucid wants you to pronounce as "Gravity Cross," is so far just a show car, but it looks awfully production-ready, and could hint that Lucid is looking to swipe some customers from its closest three-row competition, the outdoorsy Rivian R1S. To that end, the Gravity X tweaks the sleek SUV's design to make it more capable when getting off the beaten path. The concept sits higher than a standard Gravity and features a wider track, while the restyled front and rear bumpers provide better approach and departure angles. The unique six-spoke wheels are wrapped in all-terrain tires, and Lucid also fitted skid plates to shield the underside of the SUV. Tow hooks are integrated into the front and rear bumpers in case of any off-road mishaps. Along with the chunky, brushed metal silver pieces in the bumpers, the other most noticeable change is the cargo rack perched atop the roof, which houses three thin LED spotlights. The Gravity X is also distinguished by orange accents, which appear in the tow hooks, wheel spokes, and throughout the interior. The orange contrasts against the subtle Astral Drift tan paint, which is also accented by topographical maps of Big Sur and Death Valley that are etched into the SUV's hood. The look is completed by Gravity X branding in the front bumper and on the doors, while the side sills display the coordinates for Pebble Beach. Lucid says the concept is based on the Grand Touring trim, providing 828 horsepower from two electric motors and launching from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 3.4 seconds thanks to all-wheel drive. The Gravity X concept will make its public debut on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this Sunday, August 17, and we wouldn't be too shocked if a more off-road-oriented trim joins the Gravity lineup in the next couple of years.
