Prajwal Revanna case: Crime: horrendous, SIT's task: herculean, verdict: non-lenient

Bengaluru: In a judgment that denounced the heinous nature of the crime while praising the diligence of investigators, the special court in Bengaluru that delivered its verdict in the Prajwal Revanna case last week condemned the former MP's actions as "horrendous and acrimonious", and refused to show leniency, saying "those who destroy Dharma get destroyed". Quoting a Sanskrit verse that translates to "wherever women are worshipped, the divinity resides", the court said this foundational value was violated and explicit and vulgar videos involving women were made viral on social media and circulated through pen drives. The court noted that the incident had "created havoc in society", prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team by the Karnataka government in 2024. Following the SIT's constitution, multiple complaints were registered, including the one that led to the present trial. Despite these challenges, SIT was lauded for conducting what the court described as a "herculean" investigation. The agency used advanced forensic methods — including voice analysis, digital environment comparison, and image superimposition — to verify the authenticity of the videos. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like For all your EV needs ScottishPower Learn More Undo "This is probably the first case in the state where SIT requested the Forensic Science Laboratory to superimpose the video backgrounds with scientifically captured images of the scene," the court said. These steps added credibility to the victim's testimony and strengthened the prosecution's case. The court praised special public prosecutors Ashok Naik and Jagadish BN for their meticulous presentation of the case. "It would be appropriate to quote the apt words from Raja Dharma with lessons on Raja Neeti by Justice M Rama Jois: 'Dharma protects those who protect it; and those who destroy Dharma get destroyed'," the court said. "It would not be appropriate to accept the version of the accused person to show leniency. No grounds are pointed out in the above case why the maximum sentence should not be awarded to the accused person," the court said.

Bones Found From New Site In Dharmasthala Mass Burial Case

Dharmasthala (Karnataka): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged mass burial case in Dharmasthala on Monday recovered multiple skeletal remains from a new site identified by the anonymous complainant, police sources said. Under the supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) Pranab Mohanty, the SIT halted exhumations at the designated 11th site and redirected operations to a previously unexamined spot at a place called Banglegudde. The new site, located on an elevated terrain nearly 100 feet high, has yielded several skeletal fragments, including skulls and other human bones, sources in the police said. According to sources, the SIT, which is investigating the case of hundreds of alleged illegal burials between 1995 and 2014, has already gathered Unnatural Death Report (UDR) records for the period. Despite earlier records being tampered with or missing from Belthangady police archives, prior data collection ordered by Mohanty soon after the SIT's constitution helped preserve critical evidence. Police officials said the recovered skeletal remains have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to determine age, gender, and possible cause of death. The skeletal remains that were recovered from site No. 6 on July 31 have been sent for forensic examination. Attempts to exhume at four other locations--labelled sites 7 to 10--had earlier failed to produce conclusive evidence, further intensifying focus on the new site. Minor injuries were reported among a few personnel during the operation due to the difficult terrain, police officials said. The SIT has invited residents who had earlier lodged complaints or shared information to actively engage with the ongoing investigation. Officials said that recovering as many skeletals as possible remains a top priority in one of Karnataka's largest forensic-led investigations. The SIT investigation continues under tight secrecy, with daily operations expected to proceed based on emerging findings. The SIT was formed by the state government after allegations emerged of mass murder, rape, and illegal burials in Dharmasthala over the past two decades. The complainant, a former sanitation worker whose identity has not been disclosed, claimed that he was employed in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014. He alleged that he was forced to bury several bodies--including those of women and minors--some of which bore signs of sexual assault. He has since recorded a statement before a magistrate in connection with these claims.

Father-in-law tips cops off about booze party daughter-in-law was attending

Surat: Dumas police busted a party at the 'Weekend Address' hotel, where liquor was allegedly being served, and arrested four men and two women, all between 23 and 25 years of age. A man had called the Surat police control room to report that his daughter-in-law was at a liquor party in Room 443 of the hotel. Dumas police then raided the room and caught the accused, in possession of a liquor bottle. Both the women arrested are artists, while the men are professionals and businessmen. All the accused were allegedly intoxicated. Police seized four glasses and a half-full liquor bottle. Investigators said the group had rented the room to celebrate Friendship Day. Police took all of them to Civil Hospital to get their blood tested for alcohol. "We learned that the informer's son is married to one of the women arrested. As the couple had certain disputes, the informer wanted to 'teach the woman a lesson'. He started following her and came to know about the said party. After he got to know about the party, he informed police," said an official. Dumas police also learned that the hotel room was rented out without compliance with the police commissioner's notification on rentals. "Of 464 rooms in the hotel, many are owned by private individuals who sign a rent agreement and sublet rooms. The person renting the room offers it to others for higher rates. As his contract is over, police will file a separate complaint against the room owner," said assistant commissioner of police Deep Vakil. — Police to question informer As the party was disrupted due to a family dispute, police are probing the incident with caution. Sources stated police are now investigating how the informer became aware of the party. "We will get a statement from the informer on how he learned about the woman being in that particular room. Was he following her or did he deploy someone to monitor her activities? This will aid the investigation," said an official.
