Watch out for flight tracking images showing Chinese cargo planes landing in Iran

Since June 12, and the start of the war between Israel and Iran, many Internet users have been claiming that China is secretly supporting Iran militarily, based on images from Flightradar24, a website that enables live tracking of aircraft in flight.
On Monday, a pro-Iranian account on X called SilencedSirs claimed that 'two giant cargo planes flying from China to Iran turned off their tracking signals before entering Iranian airspace".
According to SilencedSirs, the proof is two-fold: a video shared in a post viewed over six million times made by a supposed media outlet called Prime Scope, and a screenshot of an aircraft's route tracked by Flightradar24, purporting to show one of the planes in Iranian airspace.
Since Friday, many Internet users have also been sharing other Flightradar24 images purporting to show several flights from China entering Iran.
Screenshots shared online of the air traffic monitoring site show that various flights operated by Luxembourg cargo airline Cargolux on June 14, 15 and 16 arrived in Iran.
'China sends the first military aid to Iran – unknown cargo,' said a user on X on the night of June 14-15, with a screenshot showing a Cargolux plane supposedly flying over Iran. The same thing happened on June 16, with another flight allegedly showing a 'Chinese cargo plane arriving in Iran' (see below).
A video of highly dubious origin
However, so far, none of the Flightradar24 screenshots posted online since Friday show any aircraft heading for Iran.
In fact, the flight number ' MNB1925 ' visible in the image broadcast in the now viral video corresponds to the Turkish company MNG Airlines, as can be traced from Flightradar24. A search using the name of this flight on the site reveals that no flight under this acronym has crossed Iran since Friday. Only one flight – the one used in the video – passed north of Iran from Turkmenistan. The map used in the video adds to the confusion because it doesn't show borders.
The video's origin is also highly dubious: our editors could find no trace online of a media outlet called Prime Scope, which defined itself at the end of the video as "unfiltered and unbiased".
Images that do not show these planes in Iran
But what about the other images of planes that appear to be flying over Iran? Three flights in particular have been scrutinised by Internet users: flights CLX9735, CLX9736, and CLX9737. Operated by Cargolux, all three departed from China. For each of these flights, screenshots (like the one below) show a plane flying over Iranian territory after passing through Turkmenistan, to the northeast of Iran.
But in reality, the visuals used for each of these flights do not show real trajectories, but only 'estimated' trajectories by Flightradar24, which do not correspond to the paths actually taken by the planes.
When contacted by the FRANCE 24 team, the Flightradar24 website explained that the aircraft icons that appear to be flying over Iran are in fact only 'estimation data' shown 'when a user clicks on a flight", to give an indication of the direction in which the aircraft should be heading. 'Estimated positions are noted by the black trail colour,' Ian Petchenik, the company's communications director, told our editors.
This explanation was also given on the Flightradar24 Facebook page on Sunday, recalling that this type of estimate can last 'up to 240 minutes' after the signal is lost.
In a statement published on its website and Facebook page on Sunday, Luxembourg-based Cargolux said that 'none of its flights utilise Iranian airspace". 'Our flight tracking systems provide real-time data, which confirms that no flight entered Iranian airspace. Any claims to the contrary are completely unfounded,' the company also stated, criticising 'incorrect data' from public tools, without naming Flightradar24 directly.
Since Friday, an information bulletin from the European Union's Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recommended airlines 'not to operate' in Iranian airspace (as well as in the airspace of countries in the path of the missiles) and 'at all flight levels'.
'Because the schedule we receive from Cargolux indicates the flight is operating to Luxembourg, we continue to estimate the flight's last known altitude, speed, and heading, which unfortunately puts the aircraft's path through Iran during a period of estimated coverage,' Petchenik explained, who also confirmed that none of these aircraft flew over Iran.
China opposed Israeli attacks on Iran
These false claims are circulating at a time when China has explicitly condemned Israel's attacks on Iran. "Israel's military actions against Iran have led to a sudden escalation of tensions in the Middle East, which deeply concerns China. We oppose any action that undermines the sovereignty of other countries," said Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday at a meeting in Kazakhstan with five Central Asian countries.
On Saturday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had already expressed his dissatisfaction to his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar, explaining that "the international community is still seeking a political solution to the Iranian nuclear issue". He had previously called Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to express China's support.
China is not only a major diplomatic ally for Iran, but also an important economic partner since 90% of Iranian crude oil is exported to China.
A stopover in Turkmenistan for 'refuelling'
If flight CLX9737's destination was Turkmenistan, what about flights CLX9735 and CLX9736? Both are supposed to be direct flights between China and Luxembourg, but their tracking seemed to stop in the middle of Turkmenistan, according to their flight history available on the Flightradar24 website.
When asked about this, Flightradar24 told our team that the partial route was due to a lack of information on the stopovers of Cargolux flights, which regularly stop off in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, on the route between China and Luxembourg.
'Cargolux knows that its planes will stop in Ashgabat to refuel, but this stop is not indicated in the available information,' explained Petchenik. Hence the impression, when consulting Flightradar24, that these journeys ended in Turkmenistan, when their destination was in fact Luxembourg.
Another air traffic monitoring site, FlightAware, showed that both flights were completed in two stages. On this website, the planes can be traced back some four hours after their stopover in Ashgabat. On both occasions, they were found on the western border of Turkmenistan, en route to Luxembourg, without passing through Iran.

How France loves to caricature itself. In July the Prime Minister asked the country to work harder to pay off its debts. Response? The threat of a nationwide sulk - a sulk, not a strike - from September 10th when everyone is urged to stay at home. No work; no shopping; no school; no fun. In its more extreme form, the Bloquons-tout (block everything) movement calls for an open-ended, popular lie-in starting on the second Wednesday in September. We refuse to produce, to consume, to run, to serve…when the country is brought to a halt, the real power will appear. It is in our hands.' Advertisement The first demand of the more radical 'Bloquers' is to be paid by the state for staying in bed indefinitely. Others, less ambitious, seem to envisage only a one-day protest. The movement began in May in a Far Right, anti-EU, anti-Macron, pro-Russian account on social media. It has since spread to elements of the extreme Left. The online popularity of the idea has exploded since the Prime Minister François Bayrou called last month for radical action to reduce France's runaway budget deficit. He has proposed €44 billion in spending cuts and increased taxes in 2026 but most of the popular anger is directed at his vague plan to abolish two out of the eleven French bank holidays . The block-the-country movement is reminiscent of the rise of the Gilets Jaunes (yellow vests), the anti-Macron and anti-politics revolt which began in rural and outer suburban France in 2018. Like the GJs, the protest has incubated on social media. Like the GJs, the blockers reject all leaders, political parties and trades unions. Some of those involved appear to be ex- Gilets Jaunes . Other former GJs are dubious or hostile, suspecting that the 'blockers' are not as non-political as they claim. Unlike the yellow-vests, the movement does not favour public demonstrations or blockages of streets and roundabouts. It believes that the people should arise by doing nothing. Apart from being paid to stay at home, the demands of the movement are vague. Like the yellow vests, they want all political decisions to be made by online referenda. They want higher pay for all. Some of the block-all accounts reject big business, echoing the anarcho-Left. Other accounts attack the EU and migration, copying the Far Right. The only political party to support the September 10th movement so far is Jean-Luc Mélenchon's Far Left La France Insoumise (France Unbowed). Mélenchon has rarely seen a protest that he does not like. He refuses to accept that this one began on the Far Right which he claims to abhor. Marine Le Pen's Far Right Rassemblement National is observing events cautiously. Some of her party barons say that the anti-state rhetoric of the movement is more reminiscent of the Far Left, than the nationalist right. They will no doubt attempt to hijack the protests if they are successful - just as they tried and failed to hijack the Gilets Jaunes . Advertisement How seriously should the sleep-in revolt be taken? It seems to have all the weaknesses of the yellow vests and none of the strengths. Because the Gilets Jaunes mistrusted leaders, they squandered their initial success. An apolitical rural-suburban movement was eventually taken over by the urban, alternative Left. The yellow vests' initial power came from the fact that they were a social club as well as a social movement. Blocking roundabouts while grilling sausages with the neighbours or with strangers was fun. The 'blockers' plan to stage a revolution at home is unlikely to generate the same camaraderie or excitement. Initial soundings by the French security services, reported in the French media, suggest that the movement's numbers are growing fast but they are not exploding as the online support for the Gilets Jaunes did in the summer of 2018. Pro-blockage sites are popping up on Facebook, TikTok, X, and Instagram. Support is now in the tens of thousands but not the hundreds of thousands, as it was for the yellow vests. And yet… Advertisement Many mainstream commentators, myself included, were doubtful about the strength and staying power of the Gilets Jaunes in 2018. They lasted, in diminished form, until the Covid pandemic of early 2020. For a few weeks in 2018-9, they threatened to overturn French politics-as-usual. Whatever the success or failure of the mass sleep-in from September 10th, the rise of the blockers is a reminder that conventional French public life has become dangerously fragile. Prime Minister Bayrou is a man who believes that he understands the public mood. He appealed to the people over the heads of politicians and parties last month to wake up to the dangers of an accumulated debt of 114 percent of GDP. The most notable response so far has been an appeal by the people to the people to stay in bed.

A pair of American lawmakers have accused the Spanish government of putting US national security at risk by contracting the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to handle sensitive data. Pedro Sánchez's government has been facing backlash for weeks over the multimillion-euro deal, which would see Huawei manage and store sensitive data related to judicial wiretaps. US President Donald Trump's administration has demanded that Sánchez cancel the agreement, threatening to cut off intelligence cooperation. The US considers Huawei an extension of the Chinese state and a potential instrument of espionage. The Spanish government has kept publicly quiet amid the criticism. Now, two US Congressmen are raising their own concerns. In a letter to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick dated August 8, they said the plan has serious implications for US digital security, privacy, and commercial interests, and that it would hurt US workers. Reps. In the letter, Hudson and Bilirakis accused the EU and especially Spain of having a double standard, restricting data transfers with the US on privacy grounds, but allowing the free flow of data to China. They said the US-EU Data Privacy Framework (DPF) has been invalidated several times by the EU, creating legal uncertainty for US companies. The lawmakers called on the US Commerce Department to investigate decisions by Spain and other EU governments that may adversely affect US digital commerce. The European Commission, the European Union's executive arm, has also raised concerns over Huawei and ZTE. In 2023, the Commission said member states would be "justified" in restricting or excluding the Chinese companies from their 5G networks because they come with "materially higher risks than other 5G suppliers".

Russian allies Belarus and Iran agree to boost bilateral defence ties

Two of Russia's closest allies - Belarus and Iran - signed agreements on Wednesday to boost bilateral ties in key areas including defence, both governments said. Presidents Aliaksandr Lukashenka and Masoud Pezeshkian signed a package of 13 documents in Belarus' capital, Minsk. Both governments have been placed under heavy international sanctions, limiting potential trading partners. Pezeshkian said Iran would help Belarus to "neutralise" such measures, citing Tehran's decades of experience circumventing Western economic restrictions. Lukashenka told Pezeshkian that Belarus was "ready to cooperate with you on all issues — from providing your country with food to military-technical cooperation," calling the Iranian president a "friend." The two parties did not disclose any further details on how the countries intend to cooperate in the defence sector. The Ukraine connection Lukashenka, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, allowed Russia to use Belarusian territory as a staging ground for Moscow' full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and later allowed the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear missiles. Iran has supplied Russia with drones, notably the Shahed, for use in the war and Pezeshkian signed a strategic cooperation treaty with Putin in January, although it did not include a mutual defence clause. The Iranian president's visit to Minsk has been postponed several times due to US and Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. Lukashenka called the strikes on Iran's nuclear infrastructure "a serious threat to regional and international stability and security." "We support Iran's legitimate right to develop peaceful nuclear energy," Lukashenka said.
