KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Three Malaysians, including a local rapper, were arrested in Laos on May 27 for allegedly attempting to smuggle 103 packets of cannabis weighing about 86kg through Wattay International Airport in Vientiane.
According to Kosmo! Online, citing The Laotian Times, the cannabis was concealed in six suitcases and was believed to be bound for Germany.
Authorities comprising customs officers, airport security, and other enforcement agencies reportedly became suspicious of the trio during routine screening procedures.
A subsequent inspection of their luggage uncovered 103 packages of marijuana with an estimated total weight of 86 kilograms.
The suspects were allegedly preparing to board a Thai Airways flight to Germany, where the drugs were believed to be headed.
Separately, the New Straits Times today quoted Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department acting director Deputy Commissioner Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali as confirming the arrests.
'We are currently verifying whether the cannabis originated in Malaysia or Thailand,' he said.
Investigations are ongoing, with Malaysian authorities working closely with their Laotian counterparts to trace the source of the drugs and uncover possible links to trafficking networks.

AGC urges restraint after Yusoff Rawther acquittal, warns against trial by media and public perception
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has urged the public to avoid speculation or defamatory comments following the High Court's acquittal of former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther on drug trafficking and weapons-related charges. According to a report published today in Free Malaysia Today, the AGC in a statement said it respected the court's decision and the judge's reasoning, while acknowledging the case's high public interest. 'The administration of justice must not be compromised by trial by media, public insinuations, social status, or perception,' it said. Yusoff, who was held in remand for nine months, was acquitted yesterday of drug trafficking and possessing two imitation pistols, claiming the items had been planted to frame him. The AGC said its decision to prosecute was based on a thorough review of the evidence and was carried out independently and in line with legal principles. It added that it is currently reviewing the judgment in detail and will consider all options before deciding on any further action. The AGC reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the rule of law and to act with integrity, fairness, and respect for the judicial process.

Norizan Yahaya, 62, was charged with making and transmitting content deemed offensive, with intent to annoy others, via the YouTube account 'Zam Yahaya Official' between 2.00pm and 6.00pm on September 15, 2024. The said content was accessed at the Cyber and Multimedia Crime Investigation Division, Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman Police Headquarters, Menara KPJ, Wangsa Maju at 8.00pm on September 16 of the same year. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Amir Hannif Ahijman proposed bail at RM10,000 with one surety. Judge Norma Ismail granted bail at RM7,000 with one surety and fixed the next case mention for July 11. — Bernama
