Wales stars combine for superb length-of-field try as match on knife-edge

Wales internationals Ellis Mee and Blair Murray combined for a superb length-of-the-field try against Leinster, using remarkable footballing skill and speed to score.
The Scarlets duo were lining up against the Dublin province in the quarter-finals of the United Rugby Championship, with the match being held at the Aviva Stadium.

And despite being huge underdogs against the league-topping Irish heavyweights, Scarlets matched their opponents in the first half, going into the sheds at half-time just one point behind them.

The try that closed the gap for Scarlets came just shy of the whistle, with Leinster initially deep inside Welsh territory. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.
Deciding to spread it wide, Leinster fluffed their lines, with a bouncing ball the result of their error.
Winger Mee spotted the danger and thumped the ball towards up field.

Four players surged after the ball - Mee, Murray, Jordie Barrett and Sam Prendergast.
Another kick forward from Mee into empty territory saw Murray stick on the afterburners and squeeze to the front of the pack.
With Barrett at his heels, Murray used exemplary footballing skill to touch the ball twice towards the try line, and dotting down to complete a superb score.

The drama wasn't over just yet, with the TMO wanting to check the grounding of the ball even after Sam Costelow's conversion was taken. Luckily for the Scarlets, the try was good. You can follow live updates here.

Leinster named a star-studded side to face the west Walians, with the likes of Barrett and RG Snyman in the matchday 23.
A total of 12 Leinster players have been selected to face Australia for the British and Irish Lions this summer, and Scarlets were going up against many of these stars, but held their own in the opening 40 minutes.
Try-scorer Murray had been tipped as a potential Lions bolter, and had he done so, he would have been the only Scarlet in the touring squad.

While he may have missed his chance for now, injuries happen on tour and he may be called upon later down the line.
The New Zealand-born back three player has been a breath of fresh air in a bleak period for Welsh rugby, with some solid performances in the Six Nations.

Bellamy explains why he's banned Wales players from swapping shirts after games

Wales continue their World Cup qualifying campaign next week, hosting Liechtenstein and then making the trip to face Belgium, who are heavy favourites to win the group Craig Bellamy has told his Wales players to 'honour the shirt' and not swap jerseys with Kevin De Bruyne and company after their World Cup qualifier in Belgium. Wales resume their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup finals this week with a double header at home to Liechtenstein and away to star-studded Belgium. Taking on the Red Devils in their Brussels backyard is Wales' biggest test in Group J, but boss Bellamy believes the culture and mentality fostered since his appointment last July and the eight-game unbeaten run that has followed will stand Wales in good stead. ‌ Bellamy insists Wales should not be considered underdogs – 'small footballing nations don't expect to qualify for World Cups, and we do' – and keeping hold of the jersey after the final whistle is among the pillars of his philosophy. ‌ 'You have to honour your shirt,' said Bellamy. 'The only time you give it up is when you lose your place and someone else takes it, but you've left it in a good place. 'That's a no-brainer to me and I believe the players love that as well. Our shirt is the most important shirt in football. We don't give that away, you can't give it away.' Asked if not swapping shirts extended to Belgian midfield maestro De Bruyne, one of the Premier League 's all-time greats at Manchester City, Bellamy replied: 'I don't think it is even worth having a conversation about. ‌ 'I don't need to answer that question. It's not going to happen. If I'm an aspiring young player then I want that (Wales) shirt. I see ours as the most important shirt, nobody else's.' Wales opened their World Cup qualifying campaign in March with a 3-1 home victory over Kazakhstan and a 1-1 draw in North Macedonia. David Brooks equalised with virtually the last kick in Skopje to protect Bellamy's unbeaten record after Wales won promotion to the top tier of the Nations League in the autumn. ‌ Bellamy draws parallels with basic habits on the football field to a 1980s Hollywood martial arts drama success at the box office. 'Have you ever watched The Karate Kid?' said Bellamy. 'Does he do karate straight away? No – it's Mr Miyagi who decides. It's wax on, wax off. He paints the fence. He teaches him all these types of rules before he can do karate, so that he has the disciplines. 'It's about basics, habits. If you don't have that intensity without the ball, if your body language is poor and you're waving your hands, it's the wrong team for you. This is not your team.'

Wrexham eye triple Premier League transfer including ex-England duo

Wrexham have set about their ambitious transfer activity with several Premier League stars, including Danny Ings, on their radar ahead of their Championship return Wrexham have set their sights on a number of Premier League veterans ahead of their return to the Championship with former England duo Danny Ings and Aaron Cresswell both on their radar. The pair have just left West Ham and are on the lookout for new clubs. Cresswell and Ings are both into their 30s, but will have plenty to offer if they dropped down to the second tier with the Welsh side. ‌ Wrexham, backed by their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have continued to show their financial muscle when it comes to their recruitment and are looking to add several players with top flight experience. Ings moved to West Ham from Aston Villa for £12million in January 2023, but is already no longer part of the club's plans. ‌ Cresswell, meanwhile, who has won three caps with the Three Lions, has been performing for the Hammers in the Premier League for a decade and is another player who would add valuable experience and quality. Welsh goalkeeper Danny Ward is another man who is on the market, reports The Sun. He is free to leave Leicester after a difficult spell and could and has landed 44 caps for his country. He was a schoolkid at Wrexham before joining Liverpool in 2012 and could relish the chance to return to the Racecourse Ground. The Welsh-based outfit have also put former Wolves centre-back Craig Dawson on their shortlist of targets, but may face competition from Derby. The 35-year-old wants to remain playing but the Rams want to bring him to Pride Park. ‌ Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has also admitted that the club will look to exercise the loan market, knowing that players will be willing to drop down one league. "The loan market is something we are looking at," he told The Athletic. "It's all about touching base with the Premier League loans managers, making sure we have an understanding of who could become available. "We can probably attract a better calibre of player than we'd have been able to do in the past. Premier League teams are reluctant to loan out their elite players into League One. It has to be a player you believe can make an instant impact and is going to make a significant contribution as the season goes on." Wrexham have become the first team to reach the second via three promotions in a row. They've shot up from the National League and secured their spot in the Championship after finishing second in League One. Oscar Piastri wins Spanish Grand Prix as Lando Norris slips back in title fight

Norris started second and finished in the same position – despite losing out to Red Bull's Max Verstappen off the line – taking the chequered flag 2.4 seconds behind Piastri. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium after he fought his way past Verstappen following a late safety car re-start. However, Verstappen accused Leclerc of driving into him as the two made slight contact on the straight and then fell off the road as he attempted to defend from George Russell. Verstappen was advised to give the position to Russell to avoid a penalty, and while he seemed set to let Russell through, he appeared to drive into the Mercedes. YES TEAM! 💪#McLaren | #M7AReborn | #SpanishGP 🇪🇸 — McLaren (@McLarenF1) June 1, 2025 'What the f***'?' Russell said on the radio, with Verstappen later making way. Russell crossed the line in fourth, with Verstappen fifth. However, Verstappen was hit with a 10-second penalty by the stewards, demoting him to 10th. Lewis Hamilton finished a poor seventh after he was passed by Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg in the closing stages. Piastri's win, which came despite a late safety car, marked his fifth of the nine rounds so far to extend his title advantage over Norris from three points to 10. After failing to land pole position, Norris knew his best chance of beating Piastri would arrive at the long run to the opening corner. However, rather than battle Piastri for top spot, the slow-starting Englishman was left scrambling to keep hold of second with Verstappen drawing alongside in his Red Bull. LAP 62/66 Wow!! 😮 Replays show Leclerc and Verstappen touched on the pit straight at the restart 💥#F1 #SpanishGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 1, 2025 Norris occupied the centre of the track, but Verstappen, with the advantage of sitting on the racing line, was able to stamp on his brakes later than the British driver to catapult ahead at the first corner. It was the worst possible start for Norris, who had been hoping to build on the momentum of taking just his second triumph of the season in Monaco a week ago. Instead it would be damage limitation, with Verstappen launching an early challenge on Piastri for the lead. It did not last long with Piastri 1.5 seconds clear at the start of lap four. Further back, and Hamilton, who out-qualified Leclerc for the first time since the Chinese Grand Prix in April, was up one place to fourth after he moved round the outside of Russell at the start. But the seven-time world champion was soon struggling for speed, and, for the second time in his short Ferrari career, was asked to move aside for Leclerc. Drama in the closing stages of the race! 😱 Max Verstappen drops to P10 following a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with George Russell #F1 #SpanishGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 1, 2025 Hamilton duly obliged on lap 10 and by the start of the next lap had already fallen more than a second behind his team-mate. Norris, in his superior McLaren, made light work of Verstappen at the start of lap 13 to take second place, but by now Piastri was already 4.2 seconds up the road. In came Norris on lap 21 for a change of tyres with Piastri in on the following lap. That promoted Verstappen into the lead before the four-time world champion pulled in for his second change of tyres on lap 29. Hamilton's sub-par race then suffered another setback in the pits when he lost time with a sticky front-right tyre. Piastri looked on course to cruise to victory only for Kimi Antonell's engine to expire on lap 55 of 66, and, with the Italian rookie stranded in the gravel at Turn 10, out came the safety car. A six-lap shootout followed but, despite the chaos behind, it was Piastri who held his nerve to keep Norris at bay and land another dent to the Briton's title tilt. Piastri said: 'It was a great weekend overall. The pace was good and we could turn it on when we needed to. 'Good to bounce back from Monaco. It has been a great year and this weekend has been the one I have been after. The team gave me a great car and winning races is a lot of fun.' Norris said: 'Oscar drove a very good race. I didn't have the pace to match him but I gave it my best shot.' Leclerc added: 'Max wanted to bring me to the inside, so I was pushing him to the left. There was a bit of contact but for me no damage so there were no consequences.'
