Buy This Aston Martin That Hasn't Run In 15 Years Because You're Smarter Than The Last Guy Who Couldn't Get It Running

Yahoo03-03-2025

Everybody knows that British automobile manufacturing was at its height in the early 1990s, with quality control and component manufacturing second to none. So the fact that this 1991 Aston Martin Virage with a broken odometer showing 93,000 miles, currently listed on Bring A Trailer, hasn't been running for 15 years is totally an anomaly. There is really only one reason that a seller would list a car like this with a clean Massachusetts title in non-running condition, and that's because they are a big dummy who doesn't know how to make a simple and easy car like this go vroom vroom. But you do, because you're smarter than them, maybe smarter than everyone.
The seller has owned this car for 27 years and claims he only put about 1,000 miles on the car before parking it in their collection for the last decade and a half. It's easy to tell that this was a snow-belt car, because the corrosion on the underside is off-putting, but that doesn't deter you, does it? You're probably looking at this no-reserve auction and thinking you can get yourself a pretty cool daily driver for just a few thousand bucks. What could possibly be the downside? It has a 5.3-liter V8 with a 3-speed automatic behind it. This is basically a Corvette, and those are notoriously easy to work on. You might as well put in your bid now, because this whole thing is basically like taking candy from a baby. This Virage needs an entirely new fuel system because it sat for 15 years with old gasoline in it? Come on, you could do that in your sleep.

I don't have to tell you about it, but for the normies here who aren't as well-versed in the Aston Martin lineup, the Virage was Aston's flagship-level V8-powered car from 1989 to 2000, positioned above the later DB7 that had an optional V12, but below the high-performance Vantage variant. The hand-built British luxury machine used high-quality German components, like Audi 200 headlights and Volkswagen Scirocco taillights, for example. Aston Martin contracted American hot-rodders Callaway to design dual-overhead cam cylinder heads for its long-serving dry-sump V8, and in this car the engine gained fuel injection. The engine in this beast produced a healthy 330 horsepower and 364 lb-ft of torque, which would have been quite quick when this car was built if it weren't for the fact that it weighs a tick shy of 4,000 pounds. Period tests claim an 8-second 0-to-60-mph time for the automatic (longer for the manual), and a top speed of just 158 miles per hour. This car was more of a stately cruiser than a rapid missile, but that's exactly what you want. You'll prove them wrong when you get this car tuned up just right and it sets a new world record for speed. I bet it'll even jump a coke can off the line.
As I write this the bidding sits at just $5,555 with a full day remaining. Do you think you could get it for under $10,000 and rehab it back to health? Give it a shot, you'll probably come out smelling like roses because of how smart and savvy you are. Only about a thousand of these were made in a decade of production, so it's a rare piece of history! Once you're finished with this simple and easy project car, you will probably be hungry, but too tired to cook. Try 30 to 40 olives. It's an easy weeknight dinner. Eat them directly out of the jar with your fingers. You will certainly not regret eating 30 to 40 olives.

Coastal town treated to free chips with a twist - powered by an electric car

A coastal town was treated to free chips with a twist - the chippy was powered by an electric car. In the aptly named Kent town of Deal, National Fish and Chip Day was celebrated with 300 portions of chips given away, as well as a limited run of battered fish. But it wasn't your ordinary chip shop, with the chippy being powered by two electric cars and fronted by TikTok's 'Chip Shop Diva', Destiny Harold. The Dacia Spring, which its makers say is the cheapest electric vehicle currently on the market, was the power behind the frying, in partnership with local chippy, The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar. It comes after a poll of 2,000 adults found fish and chips is the most popular treat on a British holiday, as well as cream tea and hot doughnuts. Others to feature in the top 20 list include Mr Whippy ice cream, Cornish pasties and mussels. Quintessentially British foods, such as fish finger sandwiches, strawberries and cream and a pie and mash also featured in the ranking. A spokesperson for car brand Dacia said: 'It was fun treating passers-by today and showing the power of our electric car, Spring, using its vehicle to load technology, which allows you to power external devices off the car's battery. 'It's no surprise we have a national day dedicated to the iconic meal that is fish and chips and the study shows just how much we love it and associate it with holidays by the seaside. 'Playing on the phrase 'cheap as chips' in line with our affordable car and being in the appropriately named Deal, was a great way to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day.' The research also found 41 per cent of adults describe such foods as nostalgic, while 45 per cent feel satisfied after eating them. When ordering a classic fish and chips, cod (48 per cent) and haddock (19 per cent) were the most popular choices, but 69 per cent simply order a portion of chips. It also emerged 44 per cent believe fish and chips is the 'food of the people' and 39 per cent said class doesn't impact how people eat it. While 46 per cent feel there is something nostalgic about eating the British staple with a wooden fork, which 33 per cent typically do, although 38 per cent opt to eat it by hand. Food psychologist, James Cornish, said: 'There are few things that unite the British public quite like fish and chips. 'Golden, salty, comforting, and steeped in history, this timeless dish is more than a meal - it's a national treasure. 'Loved across generations, social classes, and regions, it's one of those rare things that truly brings us together. 'There's a certain kind of magic in fish and chips - a simple meal that somehow carries the weight of memory, comfort, and delight. 'Maybe it's because we don't expect too much from humble food, but our delight is excelled through the delivering of more than we expected.'

UK government makes major driveway law change set to affect millions of homes

Labour has just rolled out a major driveway law change which is set to benefit thousands of UK homes. No more planning applications are needed for EV charging point installations as the government cuts red tape. Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, announced drivers and businesses will no longer need to submit a planning application to install public or private EV sockets. EV owners will be able to unlock savings of up to £1,100 a year compared to running a petrol or diesel car. 🇬🇧 Great to visit @astonmartin yesterday — where British engineering meets world-class innovation. 🚗 Took the DBX707 for a spin 🌍 UK trade deals with 🇺🇸 🇪🇺 🇮🇳 to safeguard 150,000 jobs in auto & steel 🔋 £2.3bn Govt boost to power the switch to EVs — Lilian Greenwood (@LilianGreenwood) June 6, 2025 The planning changes also apply to workplace and public chargepoints, meaning businesses will be able to install new sockets faster and for less money, increasing the number of public chargepoints. Ms Greenwood said: "We're cutting down on paperwork to power up the EV revolution, so that drivers, businesses and those looking to make the switch will have more chargepoints to power from, and less red tape to deal with." Vicky Edmonds, chief executive of EVA England, said: "Making it easier to install both public and private charging infrastructure is essential to helping more drivers switch to electric." She warned "further action is needed" as "drivers without driveways still face barriers to affordable, convenient charging". Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for The AA, believes "removing the planning rules" will help "accelerate installations". He further added: "The crucial element is ensuring grid connection in a timely manner. This is especially important in rural locations and areas where there is no dedicated off-street parking." Rocio Concha, director of policy and advocacy at consumer group Which? said it is "an important step in the right direction".

Geely won't build plants in U.S., Europe amid excess global capacity, founder Li Shufu says

Geely Holding Group will not build assembly plants in Europe or the United States as the auto industry's globalization push stalls and the world faces a surplus of factories, founder and chairman Li Shufu said. The company instead should further enhance coordination with Volvo and other partners, including Renault and several other automotive companies, in the U.S. and Europe, Li said during a recent internal meeting at the company. He didn't elaborate on what he meant by coordination, according to a video of the meeting released by Geely on May 28. Sign up for the weekly Automotive News China newsletter, including commentary by journalist Yang Jian and highlights from top manufacturers and supplier news from China and Asia. Geely and other automakers face increased competition in China from legacy automakers and startups such as Xiaomi. BYD has launched a bruising price war that sparked a recent sales surge but is also undercutting profits across the industry as other automakers are forced to match the discounts. Li's comments come amid a trade war between the U.S. and China that has effectively locked Chinese automakers out of the American market because of high tariffs on electric vehicles. BYD, Chery and other Chinese automakers are also making a push to expand sales overseas with foreign plants or through exports, adding more competition in key markets including Brazil. In Europe, Chinese automakers also face steep tariffs on EVs, prompting them to localize output. Globalization has come to an end after expanding for more than 40 years, and it is time for Geely to adjust its global strategy, Li said. 'We should avoid constructing production facilities, which involves purchasing land, building factories, buying equipment and hiring employees, as this is not an optimal approach given the global surplus in auto production capacity,' he said. Geely is still seeking what he called 'breakthroughs' in some 'key' markets, Li told staffers at the internal meeting. 'For example, in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, we must accelerate localization efforts, including the localization of components and talent,' he said. 'This is an urgent priority that requires immediate action,' he added. Geely Holding Group, based in Hangzhou, the capital of east China's Zhejiang province, builds and markets gasoline and electrified cars and light trucks under Geely and other brands. The private Chinese conglomerate owns Swedish carmaker Volvo Car Corp. and British taxi manufacturer London EV Co., previously known as London Taxi Co. It also holds shares in German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz and British sports car brands Aston Martin and Lotus, as well as Malaysian car brand Proton. Geely Holding Group assembles and distributes battery-electric vehicles for Smart and Lotus brands in China. Outside China, the Chinese group produces vehicles under the Geely brand in Belarus. It also produces and markets vehicles under Proton in Malaysia. In October 2022, Geely Holding Group acquired a 32 percent stake in Renault Group's Korean subsidiary to produce hybrid vehicles and internal combustion engine models for the local market. The two sides created a joint venture in London in May 2024 to develop hybrid and combustion powertrain systems including engines, transmissions, hybrid systems and batteries for their own brands and other global automakers including Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. On Feb. 18, Geely Holding Group signed a preliminary deal with Renault allowing it to use the French automaker's plants and distribution network in Brazil to build and sell vehicles locally.
