Croatia endorsed India's approach, expressed solidarity on Pahalgam attack, says Indian Envoy

India Gazette7 hours ago

Zagreb [Croatia], June 18 (ANI): India's Ambassador to Croatia, Arun Goel, has said that Croatians expressed shock when the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack happened and expressed solidarity towards India. Noting that India offers multiple options to Croatia, he said that the visit by PM Modi would further strengthen the ties between the two nations.
In an interview with ANI, Ambassador Goel said, 'Croatia itself experienced terrorism, fundamentalism and extremism. When the Pahaglam episode happened, we were shocked. I got messages from several Croatians on my phone. They expressed solidarity with us. India's measured and restrained response through Operation Sindoor was appreciated by all Croatians. If you talk to anybody on the street, you will find Croatians endorsing India's approach. They are solidly with India. They are a reliable support'. He said that this is the kind of support needed globally to counter terrorism.
Speaking about the Indo-Pacific and how India is a great partner for Croatia across several fronts, the Ambassador said, 'In the Indo-Pacific, there are various other areas when we look at the whole region in terms of its prosperity. Currently, it's a scenario of a single choice. Single choice leads to fewer options and dependability. India is going to offer various options in different domains'.
He listed the areas such as space-based applications, telecom, digital interfaces and infrastructure, and healthcare centres.
Noting that in the current unstable times, Croatia is looking for new partners, India offers great incentives.
'The people of Croatia have long long-lasting relationship with the people of India in terms of experiencing, enjoying and loving Indian culture, Indian ethos, and Indian spiritualism. Whichever Croatian companies are working in India, they have had positive experience, and they are looking for expansion and vice versa. The Indian companies working in Croatia are also finding it positive. Indian migrant workers here are finding it positive. So I feel that whether on a person-to-person basis or organisation to organisation, there is a connectivity, and now this is going to take a big boost with the visit of the Prime Minister. In that context, India offers multiple choices beyond a single choice. That's how I look at the Indo-Pacific angle.'
Speaking about the trade ties between the two countries, Ambassador Goel said, 'If we look at the current trade numbers between India and Croatia, although it growing year to year, as of today, the Croatian exports are 27 billion dollars and they are exporting to India just 70 million dollars which is 0.26%. Croatia is importing goods and services worth 47 billion dollars, and they are importing from India just 380 million dollars, which is 0.67%. The scope of growth in trade in both directions between India and Croatia is immense. Currently, India is the 4th largest economy in the world and will very soon be the third. That can be possible only if our exports increase manifold, in that the EU is crucial to us.'
He noted that as the India-EU FTA is already under negotiations, and with Croatia as a member of the EU, Schengen Zone, 'this visit will help us find a partner through whom we'll be able to find a balanced and more favourable FTA with the EU'.
At the invitation of the Prime Minister of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic, PM Modi will be making an official visit to Croatia on June 18.
This will be the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, marking an important milestone in the bilateral relationship. (ANI)

Dariyabad resident Sameer Naqvi told TOI: "As many as 20 members from the family, including my mother Huma Nazin (58), Syeda Begum (grandmother), uncle, aunt, and others, are currently stranded in Qom city of Iran. They have taken shelter in a basement, and we are in constant touch with them since the strife began." Sameer, a software engineer, added: "We are worried and running from pillar to post for their safe return as most people of the group are elderly and have a limited stock of medicines and money." Indian-American professor slammed for blaming 'reservation' for Air India crash: 'Freeloaders are more important'

Indian-American professor Dr Rajeshwari Iyer triggered a social media storm, blaming 'reservation' behind the that killed at least 265 people, including those on board and also those on the ground. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sharing a recruitment notice of the Airports Authority of India for the post of Air Traffic Control, the Indian-origin professor argued that in India, safety is not as important as "freeloaders". "In India, freeloaders are more important than Safety. Including Indian Citizens we lose many British citizens too, 241 died in plane crash. What a pathetic system," she wrote. While many users supported her observation, many pointed out how Indian-origin people in America are jumping to conclusions about the crash. Indian-origin businessman, Hotmail co-founder, Sabeer Bhatia also made insensitive comments about people grieving for the Air India crash victims and also defended that comment. "The crash happened due to malfunctions in Boeing Dreamliner which is manufactured by USA company due to loss of thrust. There is no fault of crew. So chill a bit before farming," one wrote, reacting to Dr Iyer's reservation post. "Firstly, it's too early to conclude anything. Also, desperately wish where one day such brilliant migrants and naturalised citizens of other 'first world' nations ( whether through parents or self) like yourself, fix the flaws of this young Indian democracy and work towards ensuring that it comes out of years of colonial and outdated ideas and depredations," another wrote. Some X users dug up Brahmin named behind accidents in India and slammed her for connecting the crash with caste, and also to the ATC, as there has been no report on ATC's involvement know the crash. New Mangalore Port Honoured with Greentech Global Environment Award for the 8th Time

Mangaluru: The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has secured the Greentech Global Environment Award 2025 under the Environment Protection category, marking the eighth time it has received this distinction. The award was presented at the 24th edition of the Greentech Environment and Sustainability Summit held in New Delhi on June 12 and 13, recognising institutions that demonstrate leadership in environmental protection and sustainability. The recognition highlights NMPA's sustained efforts in promoting green infrastructure and environment-friendly operations. NMPA Chairman Dr. A.V. Ramana lauded the Civil Engineering Department and the port workforce for their commitment to green goals. 'This award is a testimony to our comprehensive and sustained efforts towards a cleaner, greener future,' he said. NMPA has adopted a series of eco-conscious measures over recent years. Its entire operations are now powered by a 5.3 MW photovoltaic solar plant. Rainwater harvesting has been implemented through three reservoirs, benefiting over 500 village wells and ensuring water self-sufficiency. A green cover expansion saw 7,700 saplings planted in FY 2024–25. A 1.2 million-litre-per-day sewage treatment plant enables reuse of treated water, supporting zero liquid discharge goals. The port has replaced nearly all conventional lighting with energy-efficient LEDs and introduced electric buses, cars, and CNG vehicles to reduce its carbon emissions. With 55 percent of its cargo handling now mechanised, NMPA has reduced energy use and operational emissions. Shore power connectivity has been introduced for berthed vessels, and automated sprinklers are used to manage dust pollution. Other initiatives include a vermi-compost unit, a moisture cannon vehicle for dust suppression, a slop reception facility for safe management of ship waste oils, and the use of mechanised road sweepers. The award reflects NMPA's alignment with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways' vision of transforming Indian ports into hubs of green innovation. As one of India's leading ports on the west coast, NMPA's achievements set a benchmark for environmental stewardship in the maritime sector.
