World Figure Skating Championships coming to Boston, will honor victims of D.C. plane crash
For the first time since 2016, the Skating Club of Boston will host the World Figure Skating Championships.
The competition is scheduled to take place at the TD Garden on Wednesday and run through Sunday.
The championships come about two months since 6 people with ties to the Skating Club of Boston were killed in midair collision in Washington D.C.
The President of the International Skating Union says the crash victims will be honored on Wednesday.
A tribute and remembrance will take place between the women's and pair short program, although details of the tribute were not immediately available.

Sui Wenjing, Han Cong to return to pairs' figure skating for first time since 2022 Olympic gold
Sui Wenjing and Han Cong are set to return to pairs' figure skating competition next season for the first time since winning the 2022 Olympic title on home ice in Beijing. Sui, 29, and Han, 32, are entered in Grand Prix Series events in China in October and Japan in November. Their return could also help China earn an Olympic spot spot in pairs' for the 2026 Milan Cortina Games. China had no pairs' teams at this past March's World Championships, so the nation so far has not qualified any 2026 Olympic pairs' spots. China can qualify a maximum of one pairs' spot at the last qualifier in September in Beijing, where three total pairs' spots are available. Entries have not been announced. Han announced his retirement in August 2023 and has been a member of the International Skating Union's singles and pairs' skating technical committee. Sui has worked as a choreographer for Chinese pairs since the 2022 Beijing Games. Sui and Han also won Olympic silver in 2018 and world titles in 2017 and 2019 among five total world championships medals. The last pairs' team to repeat as Olympic champion was Irina Rodnina and Alexander Zaitsev for the Soviet Union in 1976 and 1980. None of the other top seven pairs from the 2022 Olympics are currently competing together internationally. That includes the Russian pairs who finished second, third and fourth behind Sui and Han in Beijing. Russian skaters have been banned from international competition since shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine two and a half years ago. While singles skaters from Russia have been cleared to compete as individual neutral athletes at the last Olympic qualifier in September, no pairs' teams from Russia were cleared. At last season's World Championships, the pairs' medalists were Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan, followed by Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany and Sara Conti and Niccolò Macii of Italy. New bar dedicated to showing women's sports to open in Boston: The Sports Bra
A bar dedicated to showing exclusively women's sports expanded to four new cities, including the City of Champions. The Sports Bra, based out of Portland, Oregon, announced on Tuesday they will be opening locations in Boston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and St. Louis. Advertisement The two hometown professional women's teams include the PWHL's Boston Fleet and the NWSL's Boston Legacy FC. 'The first four franchises of The Sports Bra will join our OG Portland location to become the 'Starting Five,'' founder and CEO Jenny Nguyen said. 'Together, we're serving fans nationwide who are hungry for spaces that not only champion women's sports, but create a community where everyone feels like they belong. There is no better moment than this to open these places.' The menu boasts a wide variety of barroom favorites, including wings and burgers. They also include vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free menu options, along with signature cocktails. Nguyen said each new location will be locally owned and operated, although the location in Boston has not yet been announced. ‘Need a burger after this': Plymouth man training to repeat win in international lifting competition
A Plymouth man is going for the gold again. Robert Cutts spent more than 30 years in law enforcement, and later this month, the weightlifter will again be competing in the World Police and Fire Games. He won the top spot in 2015 in powerlifting. Advertisement When it comes to weights, more is better for Cutts. As he warmed up at a Plymouth gym, he quickly jumped from 225 pounds to 315 pounds as he loosened up. 'I like challenging myself. I've worked 31 years doing this and God's given me a gift, and I'm going to continue using it so they're going to have to drag me off the platform.' That platform will be in Birmingham, Alabama, where the World Police and Fire Games will be held. 'It's an Olympic-style competition, and even some of these first responders are actually Olympians, so it's very competitive. Cutts will be one of eight thousand first responders competing in 62 different sports. 65 countries will be represented. Advertisement Power weightlifting didn't become a passion for Cutts until he was in his 30s. When he first started, Cutts weighed 234 pounds. He says his coach took him to the buffet at the Golden Corral twice a day, and his weight jumped to 400 pounds in about 2 years. His personal best came in 2000 when he lifted 573 pounds in a competition held in Brockton. Cutts grew up in Harwich and still has roots on Cape Cod. When he won his gold medal in 2015, he didn't keep it. He donated it to the weight room at the Yarmouth Police Department in honor of fallen Sergeant Sean Gannon. 'It was just in the spirit of being a first responder and knowing that this man put his life on the line. The medal means really nothing, but it was just a gesture to say, you know, yeah, when I'm on that platform, I think of the lost first responders.' Advertisement At 65, Cutts has no plans to lighten his load. He donates his time at local schools, trying to get young people interested in lifting. 'On some team sports, some kids get very frustrated that they don't play, but in power lifting, it doesn't matter if your kid lifts 50 or 1000. As a parent, you're going to see them lift, and people come to see you lift. They don't see you miss the shot. It's very encouraging.' He feels the sport has changed his life and hopes it can have the same effect on the next generation. For now, after a good workout, Cutts is ready to move on to phase II of his training. 'I'm going to need a burger after this, maybe some Popeyes,' he says with a chuckle. Advertisement Participants at these games will compete in traditional sports like basketball, cycling, softball, and golf. They also have the option to test their skills as first responders.
