Also on this date: In 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed a measure authorizing the establishment of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. In 1935, Adolf Hitler broke the military terms set by the Treaty of Versailles by ordering the rearming of Germany and resuming military conscription. U.S. Figure Skating show honoring crash victims will feature Nathan Chen, Nancy Kerrigan
U.S. Figure Skating show honoring crash victims will feature Nathan Chen, Nancy Kerrigan Show Caption Hide Caption Olympians Tonya Harding, Nancy Kerrigan mourn plane crash victims Several members of the U.S. figure skating community were on board the American Airlines flight that collided with an Army helicopter. Nancy Kerrigan, Nathan Chen and dozens of other U.S. figure skating stars will converge in Washington on Sunday to pay tribute to the victims of the American Airlines flight that fatally collided with a military helicopter last month. The special tribute show, titled "Legacy on Ice," will feature performances by more than 40 athletes over two hours at Capital One Arena as U.S. Figure Skating and its corporate partners look to raise money for the families affected by the fatal collision over the Potomac River on Jan. 29. Authorities said 67 people died in the crash, the cause of which is currently being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. According to U.S. Figure Skating, nearly half of the passengers on the American Airlines flight were members of the figure skating community who were returning home following a national development camp for young skaters in Wichita, Kansas. While the specific details of Sunday's exhibition have yet to be revealed, here's what we know about the show, who will be there and how to watch it. What is the 'Legacy on Ice' tribute show? "Legacy on Ice" is a one-time exhibition being held at Capital One Arena in Washington to raise money for the families of the crash vicims and the first responders that worked on scene. The proceeds are being distributed through the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation, the charitable foundation associated with the entity that owns the NHL's Washington Capitals, NBA's Washington Wizards and WNBA's Washington Mystics. According to U.S. Figure Skating, Sunday's show will feature performances by current and former U.S. skating national champions, while also "[weaving] in storytelling as a poignant tribute to the history of figure skating in the United States." "Additionally, the first responders, the fallen and their families will be acknowledged in tributes of remembrance," the national governing body said in a news release Monday. The exhibition concept is well-known and long-established in figure skating, where high-level domestic and international competitions usually end with such a performance. Exhibitions usually feature more artistry and creativity than the competitions themselves, which can be more technical. Who will be at 'Legacy on Ice'? U.S. Figure Skating has released a list of 41 figure skaters who are expected to take the ice Sunday. In addition to Kerrigan, a two-time Olympic medalist, and Chen, the reigning gold medalist, the list features some of the most well-known American athletes in the history of the sport, including: Brian Boitano, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist Peggy Fleming, who won Olympic gold in 1968 Scott Hamilton, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weir, three-time U.S. champion and NBC figure skating analyst Kristi Yamaguchi, who won Olympic gold in 1992 Several current members of Team USA − and Olympic hopefuls for the upcoming 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina − are also expected to attend, including Ilia Malinin, Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito. How can I watch the 'Legacy on Ice' tribute show? "Legacy on Ice" will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET on Sunday and be broadcast live on NBC's streaming service, Peacock. An encore showing of the exhibition will air on NBC at 1 p.m. ET on March 30.

New Videos More Clearly Show Helicopter Colliding With Passenger Plane
Two new videos have emerged capturing Wednesday's midair collision of a passenger plane with a military helicopter in Washington, D.C., offering a clearer view of the catastrophe that killed 67 people. The videos obtained by CNN and verified by NBC News appear to show American Airlines Flight 5342 descending into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport as the Army Black Hawk helicopter travels straight into it. A massive explosion results, sending both aircraft plunging into the Potomac River below. See the videos below: A spokesperson for the airport declined to confirm or comment to HuffPost on the footage. Federal investigators have said that they have recovered the plane's black boxes, which record flight data and cockpit communications, though as of Friday the helicopter's black box remained unaccounted for. D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly, speaking at a press conference Friday afternoon, said 41 bodies have been recovered from the crash site and 28 of them have been positively identified. The plane's fuselage will likely have to be removed to recover the remaining bodies. Nancy Kerrigan Openly Weeps Over DC Plane Collision That Killed Figure Skaters
Olympic silver medalist Nancy Kerrigan says she couldn't just sit at home after learning that several members of the figure skating community had died in the devastating aircraft collision near Washington, D.C., earlier this week. On Thursday, the figure skating legend decided to speak alongside fellow athletes at a press conference at the Skating Club of Boston — where she is an alumna and some of the late skaters trained. While speaking to reporters, Kerrigan was clearly heartbroken, as seen in a video shot by CNN. 'I'm unsure how to process it,' a clearly frazzled Kerrigan began while openly weeping. 'Which is why I'm here,' she said, noting she had received requests to do interviews related to the collision. 'I didn't feel like it was right to be home and doing interviews for this.' She later added, 'We've been through tragedies before as Americans, as people, and we are strong. And I guess it's how we respond to it, and so my response is to be with people I care about and I love, and I needed support. … I think it's a shock.' Kerrigan acknowledged the collision was disastrous for 'anyone that was on that plane, not just the skaters, because it's just such a tragic event,' but said she felt 'an even bigger blow' when she realized she personally knew some of the people who were killed. 'We just wish them well and the families — the courage and the strength to make the next steps,' she said. 'I don't know how — you look at people who go through tragedies, and you wonder how they do it. I don't know, but we're so strong.' On Friday, The Associated Press reported that over 40 bodies have been pulled from the Potomac River since a commercial American Airlines flight collided with an Army helicopter while the plane was landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night. President Donald Trump politicized the tragedy Thursday, expressing his opinion just a day after the incident that it was somehow due to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and specifically blaming disabled people who work for the Federal Aviation Administration. But federal investigators told reporters Thursday they would not speculate on the cause, and that air crash investigations can take months to be conclusive.
