Woman's naked body found hanging from balcony after boyfriend's son's fall

Daily Mirror27-05-2025

Rebecca Zahau, 32, was found naked, bound and hanging from the second-story balcony of her boyfriend's mansion in Coronado, California
On the morning of July 13, 2011, Rebecca Zahau, a 32-year-old mum, was found hanging naked from the second-floor balcony of her boyfriend's mansion in Coronado, California.
Rebecca, a certified ophthalmic technician who was dating pharmaceutical tycoon, Jonah Shacknai, was found gagged, with her hands and feet tied. The grim discovery was made by Shacknai's brother Adam, who cut her down and rang 999.

Detectives soon discovered that Rebecca had received a voicemail just hours before her death, informing her about the critical condition of Shacknai's six-year-old son, Max. The young boy had suffered a fall down a staircase at his dad's 27-bedroom historic mansion, with Rebecca being the only adult present during the incident.

Max's prognosis was bleak, and he tragically passed away due to his injuries on July 17. Rebecca's death sent shockwaves through the tranquil, affluent island community of Coronado, located across the San Diego Bay from downtown San Diego, sparking its most high-profile and mysterious police investigation.
The case has since inspired a book and an Oxygen TV special, drawing the attention of numerous internet sleuths. Rebecca and Shacknai started dating shortly after his divorce from his second wife, Max's mum, reports the Mirror US.
As their relationship deepened, Rebecca left her job at Horizon Eye Specialists and Lasik Centre in Scottsdale, Arizona, to devote more time to Shacknai and his children, claims her former employer.
In 2007, Shacknai settled into the grand Spreckels Mansion, a lavish Italian Renaissance and Beaux-Arts-styled estate built in 1908 for a member of the Spreckels sugar dynasty, using it chiefly as a summer residence.
The enigmatic circumstances of Rebecca's death initially left local authorities puzzled. Initially thought to be a homicide, her death became even more mysterious when a baffling message was discovered in black paint on a guest bedroom door, reading, "she saved him can he save her."

Yet, following a thorough investigation, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department concluded that she had committed suicide, inferring that she felt responsible for Max's accident. To back up their findings, officials showed journalists a video demonstration depicting how they believe she managed to bind her hands and feet before hanging herself.
Investigators also highlighted her fingerprints on a knife used to cut the rope and her toe prints on the balcony floor, which they believe was her launch point.
Despite the official account, Rebecca's mother and sister vehemently contested the police report. They filed a wrongful death claim, accusing Shacknai's brother, Adam, who had travelled to California after Max's accident and was staying in the mansion's guesthouse, of being implicated in her death - which he has always strongly denied.

In a shocking twist back in 2018, a San Diego civil jury sided with the bereaved family, awarding them $5 million in damages after deeming Adam responsible for her death, despite his claims of innocence, as ABC News reported.
The Zahau family's solicitor argued that Adam had sexually assaulted and murdered her, making it look like she took her own life, as per the Los Angeles Times. Adam's defence barrister, Dan Webb, was left reeling by the verdict, saying he was "absolutely astonished".
"It is clear the Zahau family desperately wanted to place blame after such an inexplicable tragedy," Webb said in a statement to PEOPLE. "But falsely accusing an innocent man of murder, without a shred of credible evidence, did nothing to advance the pursuit of justice, nor to honor the memory of Max and Rebecca. Instead, the fabricated allegations against Adam, and the emotional jury response they provoked, only add another appalling human tragedy to this already horrible situation."

After the civil jury's decision, the family's legal representative told journalists they would ask the sheriff's department to reopen the case.
The sheriff's department assigned new detectives to reassess the case, but they reached the same conclusion as their predecessors. "We conducted an objective and thorough investigation into Miss Zahau's death," the sheriff's department told PEOPLE.
"The facts of that investigation have led to the conclusion that Miss Zahau took her own life."

In 2022, Zahau's family submitted a petition to the San Diego Department of the Medical Examiner, urging them to change the official classification of her death from suicide to homicide.
In a recent letter to Rebecca's attorney, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Steven C. Campman reiterated his office's unwavering stance on the case, which was revealed in documents obtained by PEOPLE magazine.
Campman stated in his September 2023 correspondence that he had "considered the arguments set forth in your letter and the information in the accompanying documents."
He mentioned that his considerations included discussions with colleagues and the pathologist who made the initial ruling.
In his concluding remarks, Campman firmly stated: "However, after reviewing the totality of the evidence, the conclusion of this office has not changed," indicating that their original findings remain intact.

Model wife castrated and cooked husband before 'taking a bite with BBQ sauce'

Omaiama Nelson, who worked as a model and a nanny after moving to California from Egypt, was convicted of murdering her pilot husband Bill Nelson and has been denied parole A model from California thought she had found her prince charming in Bill Nelson, and after a whirlwind romance, they tied the knot within three days. However, Omaiama Nelson's fairytale quickly turned dark as she recounted a marriage marred by violence shortly after exchanging vows. ‌ Omaiama, who had migrated from Egypt to the States, portrayed Bill as a man who swiftly revealed his abusive nature, alleging routine physical and sexual mistreatment. ‌ Reaching her breaking point, Omaiama Nelson committed an act of shocking brutality. She mutilated Bill, battered him to death with an iron, fried his hands, and consumed one of his fried fingers whilst declaring "I'm glad I lived". The Egyptian-born model made her way to California half a decade before these chilling events unfolded, earning her living as a nanny and chasing her modelling dreams. Crossing paths with Bill while playing pool at a bar in 1991, she entered into a relationship with the much older pilot, reports the Mirror US. Her ordeal began just days into the marriage, a tale corroborated by psychological assessments that later diagnosed her with PTSD. On Thanksgiving in 1991, after another alleged assault by Bill, Omaiama fought back with deadly force. Omaiama Nelson alleged that her husband had sexually assaulted her during a bondage session, where she was tied to the bed. She informed the police that she managed to escape her bindings and attacked him with a lamp, stabbed him with scissors, and bludgeoned him to death with a clothes iron. His cause of death was stab wounds. ‌ During this horrific assault, the former Egyptian model was clad in a red dress, red hat, and red boots, according to investigators. However, this was merely the start of Bill's horrifying end. After Bill's demise, Omaiama Nelson embarked on the macabre task of dismembering her spouse. It is believed she castrated him as retribution for her allegations of sexual assault. The murderer cooked her husband's head and boiled his hands in a desperate bid to erase his fingerprints. She then combined his body parts with leftover turkey from their Thanksgiving dinner and discarded this into the waste disposal unit. ‌ The entire gruesome act took 12 hours, with Omaiama Nelson claiming she was in a 'trance-like state'. Just days prior, a home video showed the couple enjoying family time in the Southern US with relatives - this footage was presented to the jury before Omaima's parole was rejected in 2011 by Orange County prosecutors. ‌ After the gruesome killing, Omaima Nelson was spotted behind the wheel of her husband's red Corvette, which was discovered with black bin bags on the front seat packed with dismembered body parts, CBS2 reported. A chilling video captured just after the police arrived reveals an officer shocked at uncovering organs in one of the bags. The trail of evidence led detectives to an appalling scene at the couple's flat, where it was believed Omaima Nelson had restrained her husband on the bed and butchered him. Two major pieces of proof in the case were a wooden knife and a butcher's cleaver. Neighbours had reported to the police that the sound of the waste disposal unit ran incessantly for two whole days. ‌ More human remains were later found stashed in a brown suitcase and the freezer. At her trial for the murder of her spouse, Omaiama Nelson confessed to the courtroom: "If I didn't defend my life, I would have been dead. I'm sorry it happened, but I'm glad I lived... I'm sorry I dismembered him." Omaima revealed to a psychiatrist that she had seasoned his ribs with barbecue sauce and sampled them, though she has refuted these claims ever since. Her attempt to persuade the jury that she had been the victim of her husband's abuse was unsuccessful, despite a pre-existing psychiatric evaluation and a complaint she lodged with a nurse at the Orange County Jail. The note she wrote highlighted her distress: "I am ready to lose it and go off on someone. Anyone. I can't sleep at night. I am extremely depressed."

Chilling video shows diver's last moments 300-feet below water after ignoring warnings

Yuri Lipski, a Russian-Israeli diver, died after he ignored warnings and dived solo into the Blue Hole in the Red Sea, Egypt. His body was found nearly 300 feet underwater A harrowing clip captures the dreadful last moments of a diver's life before he met with a tragic fate at a dangerous diving location after disregarding safety advice. On 28 April 2000, Russian-Israeli scuba diver Yuri Lipski descended into the infamous Blue Hole situated in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt and tragically failed to return. ‌ It is believed that nearly 91 metres below the surface, Lipski suffered the fatal effects of nitrogen narcosis, caused by the high pressures at such depths, which can manifest in disorientation, illusions, euphoria, and poor decision-making. ‌ Yet, following the calamitous event, Lipski's helmet camera was retrieved, providing a bone-chilling perspective on his last moments, according to a report by the Daily Star. The camera footage unveils the stony seabed while Lipski's breathing creates an eerie soundtrack. Lipski had hoped to record the iconic arch within the Blue Hole, a detail confirmed by Tarek Omar, a seasoned technical diver who encountered Lipski in Egypt prior to his ill-fated dive, reports the Mirror US. Despite Omar's warnings and recommendations for significant preparatory training, earnestly stating "I said 'OK, so you'll need two weeks' training with me first, and then we'll film'," as recounted to The Guardian, Lipski refused due to time constraints and proceeded with the hazardous solo dive. His remains were recovered the morning after his dive. The site of the incident, the Blue Hole, whilst being a magnet for diving enthusiasts, has a grim reputation, attributed to the deaths of possibly as many as 200 individuals. ‌ "Recovering bodies is a case-by-case thing; I do it pro bono," Omar revealed to Scene Arabia. "It is a very critical and difficult thing to do – it requires more than just being a technical diver, it takes more than experience. It is very hard because you dive deep and you stay down to locate the remains." The notorious Blue Hole has claimed up to an estimated 200 lives, making it an infamous spot for diving enthusiasts. This underwater chasm, a submarine sinkhole, plunges to about 100 metres at its deepest point and boasts two channels into the ocean, presenting a thrilling yet treacherous challenge for daring divers from across the world. Yet for Omar, this perilous place is as familiar as his own home. "I know it like my kitchen," he confided to Cairo Scene, recalling his initial foray among numerous "missions" undertaken in nearly two decades exploring the Blue Hole. Notably, one of his expeditions etched his name in the record books with a remarkable 209-metre dive.

However, pressed for time with just a weekend free, Lipski turned down the essential training and dove alone. By the following morning, his remains were discovered. The Blue Hole, prized among divers but infamous for its perilous conditions, has seen up to an estimated 200 souls lost to its depths. ‌ "Recovering bodies is a case-by-case thing; I do it pro bono," Omar revealed to Scene Arabia. "It is a very critical and difficult thing to do – it requires more than just being a technical diver, it takes more than experience. It is very hard because you dive deep and you stay down to locate the remains." The Blue Hole, notorious as a diving hotspot, is believed to have claimed up to 200 lives. This submarine sinkhole, favoured by scuba enthusiasts, plummets swiftly to about 100 metres at its deepest with dual openings to the sea, posing a tempting yet perilous challenge for adventurers worldwide. Yet for Omar, this daunting location is as familiar as home. "I know it like my kitchen," he told Cairo Scene. Recalling his initial sortie of countless "missions" Omar's two-decade tenure at the Blue Hole has even seen him emerge with accolades, notably an impressive record-breaking 209-metre dive.
