Were we ‘sten party' trendsetters in 1979?

The Guardian18-05-2025

I and my husband have been joking since 1979 that we had a 'sten party', meaning we did not have hen or stag parties but went out to the pub together with a few friends the night before our wedding. I did not realise that the term had gone mainstream till I read your article (Nine ways to cut the cost of hen or stag dos and still have a ball, 13 May). Were we trendsetters?Jane LoweMonton, Greater Manchester
Instead of spending 'a week doing some care work shifts' to find out whether this work is 'low-skilled' or not (Letters, 15 May), Yvette Cooper could just consult her husband, Ed Balls, who spent a couple of weeks in a care home doing just that for a BBC Two documentary a few years ago. Crisps as part of a main meal is nothing new ('Something a bit naughty': British snackers fall for the posh crisp, 16 May). Fifty years ago, a New Zealand flatmate introduced me to an easy fish pie recipe that had crumbled crisps as topping on the mashed potatoes. Jennifer HenleyLondon
According to Prof Nicholas Vincent, the Lowthers of Cumbria were an 'evil aristocratic family' (Harvard's unofficial copy of Magna Carta is actually an original, experts say, 15 May). Can we have a list of all the aristocracy, graded from good to bad?Peter GrayChesterfield
A great follow-up to your article about the UK's richest people (King Charles's wealth swells to match Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty on UK rich list, 16 May) would be one on how much these rich people give to good causes.Jeanette HamiltonBuxton, Derbyshire

MAFS star Belinda Vickers flashes her HUGE engagement ring while running errands with wealthy fiancé

Belinda Vickers is gearing up for her happily-ever-after after rising to fame on Married At First Sight in 2021. The bubbly TV bride was spotted out and about in Melbourne on Monday looking loved-up as she held hands with her millionaire fiancé Hayden Burbank during a casual grocery run. Belinda, 31, kept things laid-back in a white oversized sweatshirt emblazoned with colourful lettering, which she paired with navy leggings and white trainers. She accessorised with a brown leather crossbody bag and let her signature long curly red locks fall freely around her shoulders. But all eyes were on the dazzling diamond ring on her left hand. The bubbly TV bride was spotted out and about in Melbourne on Monday looking loved-up as she held hands with her millionaire fiancé Hayden Burbank during a casual grocery run Elsewhere, her fiancé opted for a preppy off-duty look in a Ralph Lauren knit sweater which he teamed up with a pair of black tracksuit pants and white sneakers. The loved-up duo appeared relaxed and smitten, with Belinda smiling shyly as they crossed the road hand-in-hand. Belinda tells Daily Mail Australia that the couple haven't yet locked in a date for their upcoming nuptials but are planning to walk down the aisle sometime next year. The couple celebrated their engagement at a lavish party in Melbourne back in April. The couple shared a series of photos to social media as they danced and posed with friends and family at the private party. Guests were treated to an array of cocktails while violinists played music at the lavish home. The couple announced their engagement back in February last year, telling Daily Mail Australia that Hayden's unique Valentine's Day proposal included a treasure hunt at the Botanical Gardens. Hayden, who is the former owner of swanky Melbourne hotspot Morris Jones, added his proposal caught the attention of the public, who burst into applause after Belinda said yes and accepted his dazzling engagement ring. Belinda tells Daily Mail Australia that the couple haven't yet locked in a date for their upcoming nuptials but are planning to walk down the aisle sometime next year 'It was always yes. It was 12 months after MAFS that we met and it really led me to him and opened up new people for me meet,' Belinda said. The pair met in Melbourne through mutual friends in 2022. In 2021, Hayden was jailed for three months after breaking Covid rules during the height of the pandemic. He hopped the border into the Northern Territory before travelling to Western Australia to watch Melbourne Demons win at Perth Stadium. To dodge WA's strict border rules at the time, he falsified a rental agreement at a Darwin address while also fraudulently obtaining NT drivers' licences. Their relationship blossomed after the bar owner spent 90 days behind bars at WA's maximum security Hakea prison, which earned him the jailhouse nickname of 'border breacher'. Hayden described his experience at one of Australia's toughest jails as 'the ultimate game of Survivor'. She and her on-screen husband Patrick Dwyer were deemed the 'golden couple' of the series but split up after nine months 'You have to form alliances and not do anything stupid and get through each day by day,' he told the Saturday Herald Sun in March 2022. 'They are the longest days of your life. I'm not built for jail. Nobody is built for jail.' Hayden added he shared a cell with one of the prison's top dogs, a bikie, who would wake him up each morning and taunt: 'Border breacher, border breacher'. Belinda found fame on season eight of Married At First Sight, which aired in 2021. Brittany Hockley reveals her wedding was 'fake' and the shocking moment her husband was 'denied entry' into Australia

Former Bachelor star Brittany Hockley married her Swiss footballer fiancé Ben Siegrist during a 'three-day extravaganza' clifftop ceremony in Bali last week. But there is just one 'minor technical detail' about the spectacular 'song and dance' that Brittany, 37, revealed to listeners of KIIS FM's The Pick Up on Monday — the marriage is not legal. 'Britt, you just got married in Bali,' Brittany's long-time best friend and co-host Laura Byrne said. 'We obviously can talk about how amazing that is, but now that we're here, we're also going to talk about how it's not legally binding yet.' 'It's a big show really,' the bride admitted, joking that the wedding 'was fake'. 'It's a bit too complicated to be honest. My husband Ben is fully Swiss, but he lives in Italy. I'm Australian living in Australia and we got married in Bali. There were way too many technicalities going on to make it legal, so we are just going to legally do it back here in Australia. 'The paperwork gets signed shortly - but let's not focus on that.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral The couple's wedding took place at Pandawa Cliff Estate which promises a 'dramatic and romantic clifftop setting overlooking the Indian Ocean' and stunning views of Bali's Bukit Peninsula. The 37-year-old was ever the blushing bride on her big day, walking down the aisle in a strapless dress by Steven Khalil which featured a lace corset with dramatic long train. Brittany and Ben gave followers a glimpse into the nuptials, sharing a duo of loved-up snaps from the big day to Instagram. One showed Ben romantically embracing his new bride as he leaned in for a newlywed kiss. The second showed the happy couple beaming as they held hands and hugged each other close. 'From the very first day, it was you,' Brittany captioned the images. 'Across any ocean, it is you. For the rest of our lives, it will always be you. Mr and Mrs Siegrist 4.6.2025,' she added, augmenting the sentiment with love heart emojis. Brittany also revealed on Tuesday that the couple hit a second snag upon their return to Australia to start married life. 'What I will say is [Ben] almost didn't join us,' Brittany said. 'We got to the airport late last night and [the airport worker] was like, "visa, sir?" 'He was like, "What do you mean visa? I didn't have a visa to get to Australia". She's like, "You can't enter the country".' Laura explained that Ben has visited Australia many times on a work visa, which was organised for him by his football club and did not realise he was on a visa. 'So, he's been coming back and forth and that visa expired,' she said. Ben is prone to these kinds of adulting hiccups, the two women agreed, as Brittany called out her groom for winding up without a pair of pants to wear down the aisle, 20 minutes before the ceremony. 'Ben decided to wear his wedding suit the week before to someone else's wedding,' she sighed. Sourcing a suit for the big day was the footballer's one task to complete for the elaborate wedding. 'Yes, my pants shrunk,' he confessed sheepishly on the podcast. Brittany had instructed Ben to send his suit off for dry cleaning in Bali at least three days before the wedding. He forgot to and then 'splashed money around' to get a last minute clean done, which left his suit pants like a pair of 'jeggings'. 'He couldn't get the zipper up,' Brittany said with a laugh. 'Which is not ideal when your legs are the size of my legs,' Ben added. 'But it was all fine. Nobody noticed. I'm not sure how you got this information because it was very secret with my groomsmen. 'But yes, there were some safety pins in my pants. But it's all fine. Nobody got stung. Nobody noticed except for you, Laura.' The Life Uncut podcast announced Brittany's engagement to Ben, 33, last year. Brittany, who formerly described herself as 'the perpetually single host', had been dating Ben long-distance for eight months when he popped the question. The duo met in November 2022 on the celebrity dating app Raya. At the time the goalkeeper's soccer team, the Glasgow-based Celtic FC, was playing in Australia against Sydney FC.
