Uddhav Thackeray calls for Opposition's unity against public security bill

Hindustan Times11 hours ago

Mumbai: After opposing the Mahayuti government's order to make Hindi the third language in schools, which was eventually revoked on Sunday, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has turned his focus towards the controversial Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of branding anyone who opposes it as 'anti-national' and 'urban naxal'. The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief on Monday participated in a protest against the bill at Azad Maidan, organised by left-wing parties such as the Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWP), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the CPI (Marxist). Addressing a crowd of hundreds of people, he said that the draft of the bill has provisions for stringent action to suppress dissident voices, and urged the Opposition to maintain unity in its fight against the proposed law.
The Maharashtra government is likely to present the controversial Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024, in the monsoon session of the state legislature, which began on Monday. A joint select committee of the state legislature has finalised a revised draft of the bill after amending key provisions following strong criticism from civil society and watchdog bodies, who claimed it could be misused by the state to silence dissent and target entities critical of the government.
The statement of objectives of the revised draft now states that the bill aims to curb 'urban naxal' activities, specifically 'unlawful activities by radical leftist organisations', rather than the earlier 'unlawful activities', by any person or organisation.
At Monday's rally, Thackeray slammed the BJP for calling anyone who criticised its policy anti-national or urban naxal. 'For the BJP, the leaders whom it accuses of corruption or having relations with anti-nationals suddenly become patriotic once they join the BJP. But if someone speaks against the BJP, they call them anti-national and urban naxal,' he said.
Thackeray also announced that his party would vote against the bill in the state legislature and expressed the need for the Opposition to be united while opposing the BJP despite its huge majority in the state legislature.
'Unity of all is important. We saw [on Sunday] how the BJP government was forced to revoke the order regarding making Hindi compulsory [in schools] due to the unity of the Marathi manoos (people). Though the Opposition parties will oppose the bill in the legislature, with the help of a huge majority, the BJP government will pass it. Even after that, we need to unite against the government to fight the battle against the bill,' he said.
Also present at the rally were Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MP Supriya Sule, state president Jayant Patil, and MLA Jitendra Awhad, who announced their opposition to the bill as well. Sule concurred with Thackeray that the Opposition should unite and be ready to oppose the proposed law, adding that she would be on the forefront if there's a need to go to jail over it.
NCP (SP) state president Jayant Patil, who was in the committee that revised the draft for the bill, said the panel had suggested important changes. However, whether or not the Mahayuti government has accepted the changes will be revealed only after it presents the bill in the state legislature, he added.

Kisan Sabha demands amendments to Wildlife Act, threatens action if Union govt. fails to act

The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has demanded immediate amendments to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, to safeguard farmers from increasing wild animal attacks. 'If the Union government fails to declare animals like wild pigs and monkeys as pests and initiate effective control measures, farmers will be forced to take the law into their own hands,' the AIKS leaders told mediapersons on Monday after concluding the two-day national council meeting held at E.K. Nayanar Academy. AIKS general secretary Vijoo Krishnan criticised successive Congress and BJP-led Union governments for implementing wildlife policies that made it impossible for farmers to protect their crops and property. 'The Centre's policy failures are pushing farmers to the brink,' AIKS leaders said. The Sabha also lashed out at the Centre for signing free trade agreements with the U.K., EU, the U.S. and New Zealand without parliamentary debate, calling it a violation of federal principles. 'These FTAs are detrimental to Indian farmers and will be strongly opposed during a national strike on July 9,' the leaders said. AIKS further announced a solidarity campaign from July 26 to August 5 to support Cuba, which is under U.S. sanctions. Contributions collected during this campaign will be sent to aid the Cuban people. AIKS president Ashok Dhawale, finance secretary P. Krishna Prasad, vice-presidents E.P. Jayarajan and others were present. The Sabha currently has a membership of 1,53 crore across 27 State and Union Territories.

Impractical step, BJP does not know how to run govt: AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj on no fuel for end-of-life vehicles in Delhi

New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Reacting to Delhi's fuel ban on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years from today, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said that this step was impractical and the BJP did not know how to run the government. Saurabh Bharadwaj said, 'Didn't they have any other way of stopping old vehicles? Now that the Monsoon has hit Delhi, will they conduct a pilot project for artificial rain? You've (BJP) filled in small potholes but left the larger ones as they are. Owners of Petrol Pump Associations say that this step is impractical. Will the petrol pump operator fight with the customer to stop giving petrol to them? They (BJP) don't know how to run the government.' He further alleged that for the next 5 years, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will keep accusing the Aam Aadmi Party. 'After 5 years, CM Rekha Gupta will say that we could not do anything because Arvind Kejriwal did not work accordingly in the past. When there was the Kejriwal government, he never blamed former CM Sheila Dikshit for any work not done,' he added. From today, all End-of-Life (EoL) vehicles identified through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at fuel stations across Delhi will not be allowed to refuel, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). According to the CAQM, this enforcement will extend to Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and Sonipat from November 1, while the rest of the National Capital Region (NCR) will implement the restriction from April 1, 2026. CAQM's member Dr Virendra Sharma said ANPR cameras have been installed at 500 fuel stations across Delhi, enabling real-time recording and tracking of vehicle data. To date, 3.63 crore vehicles have been screened through this system, of which 4.90 lakh vehicles have been identified as End-of-Life (EoL). He added that 29.52 lakh vehicles have renewed their Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC), resulting in the generation of challans amounting to Rs 168 crores. To strengthen enforcement, 100 dedicated teams from the Transport Department, Government of NCT of Delhi, are actively monitoring vehicle data to identify fuel stations with the highest number of EoL vehicles and ensure targeted compliance action. Dr Sharma said, 'It is very important to remove old BS standard vehicles to clean the air of Delhi and NCR. These vehicles play a big role in air pollution. Now that a transparent, digital and accountable system is in place, it will also be used at toll centres to make this system more effective. About 100 enforcement teams will work for this.' (ANI)

BJP appoints N Ramchander Rao as Telangana State President

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 1 (ANI): In a significant move aimed at strengthening the party's ideological and organisational base in Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national leadership has appointed N Ramchander Rao as the President of the Telangana State Unit, succeeding Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, said a release from the party. This appointment signals the party's clear intent to return to its foundational principles and reinforce its grassroots connection in the state. A veteran of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Ramchander Rao brings to the position a rare combination of ideological clarity, legal acumen, and decades of political experience, the release stated. 'A courageous student leader during the volatile 1970s and 1980s, Ramchander Rao rose to prominence at Osmania University by challenging the dominance of Leftist student organisations. In an era when Naxalite ideology had entrenched itself in the student union politics of the university, Rao led the ABVP's counter-mobilisation with grit and resolve. Despite facing physical attacks, including a grievous assault in the university library that left him hospitalised for weeks, Rao remained undeterred and continued to fight for the nationalist cause on campus,' the release said. His association with the ABVP spanned over a decade (1977-1985), during which he also served as the State Committee Member and City President while pursuing his studies in law and post-graduation. Born into a modest Brahmin family deeply rooted in the Osmania University academic community, Rao chose activism over comfort, and public service over personal safety, the party's statement said. Over the years, Ramchander Rao transitioned seamlessly into legal and public life. Starting his career in 1986 as a practising lawyer at the Nampally Criminal Courts and later the Andhra Pradesh High Court, he earned a reputation as one of the most respected legal voices in the state. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2012, and today he represents clients across the Supreme Court, High Courts, and tribunals, while continuing to provide legal support to party workers and the organisation, according to the release. Within the BJP, Rao has held several key positions, including BJYM Secretary, City Unit Vice President, State Convenor of the Legal Cell, National Legal Cell Member, State General Secretary, and Official Party Spokesperson. His political acumen and ability to build consensus earned him a seat in the Telangana Legislative Council in 2015 from the graduates' constituency covering Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Mahbubnagar districts, as per the release. According to the release, the party high command's decision to elevate Ramchander Rao is being welcomed by senior leaders and the cadre alike, who view him as a unifying force with a deep understanding of both the party's ideological vision and on-the-ground realities. He is known for his accessibility, humility, and unwavering loyalty to the party. The release further stated 'At a time when the BJP is looking to expand its footprint in Telangana, this appointment is a clear message: the party values commitment over charisma, substance over spectacle. While some detractors on social media have attempted to dismiss Shri Rao as a 'low-profile' choice, those familiar with the party's inner workings recognise his credibility, quiet influence, and unshakable dedication to the cause.' The BJP Telangana unit also extended its heartfelt gratitude to the national leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Party President JP Nadda, for their decision. 'With Ramchander Rao at the helm, the party is confident of achieving new milestones and deepening its connect with the people of Telangana,' the release said. (ANI)
