in Delhi on Wednesday. The initiative complies with the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) latest 2023 guidelines, advancing towards intelligent and secure highways.

The ATMS implementation spans the Dwarka Expressway and a 28-km section of NH-48, stretching from Shiv Murti to Kherki Daula, establishing a contemporary digital highway infrastructure.
IHMCL (Indian Highways Management Company Ltd) developed the system, with NHAI overseeing its implementation. Covering 56.46 kilometres, this project serves as a national benchmark for artificial intelligence-based traffic administration and road safety measures, according to an ANI report.
India's first AI-powered smart traffic system
The ATMS project has several key elements, with traffic monitoring cameras and video incident detection and enforcement systems being primary components.
According to Amrit Singha, Chief Product Officer of IHMCL, the ATMS incorporates various features to identify traffic rule violations, including detection capabilities for seatbelt non-compliance, triple riding incidents, and speed limit breaches.
"Through all these, we are able to detect approximately 14 different types of incidents, including overspeeding, no seatbelt, and triple riding, so these are all challanable incidents as per the Motor Vehicle Act," Singha told ANI.
The IHMCL representative elaborated on road safety initiatives, explaining that NHAI implements various information dissemination programmes. The organisation utilises ATMS to enhance public awareness about road safety amongst citizens, particularly those who use roads. Technology serves as a vital tool in achieving road safety objectives for the public.
The infrastructure includes integration with the NIC E-challan portal, which communicates traffic violations to the relevant police authorities.

NHAI has stated that ATMS spans 56.46 km, with 28.46 km situated along the Dwarka Expressway whilst the remaining portion extends across NH-48.
The official communication outlined five primary elements of the ATMS infrastructure. These include a Traffic Monitoring Camera System (TMCS) featuring 110 high-resolution PTZ cameras installed at 1-km intervals with round-the-clock surveillance, Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES), Vehicle Actuated Speed Display System (VASD), Variable Message Signboards (VMS), and a Central Control Room.
"The Command Centre acts as the digital brain of the corridor, integrating with local and national systems to enable quick deployment of emergency units during accidents, fog conditions, road obstructions, or animal intrusion. This data-driven management ensures shorter response times, fewer delays, and safer commutes," the statement read.
The innovative ATMS implementation is now considered a nationwide benchmark for artificial intelligence-driven traffic management and road safety protocols.

The ministry of road transport and highways is exploring ways to expand the use of FASTag for charging of electric vehicles , parking and insurance, over and above paying for the toll on national highways, to firm up the next phase of growth for FASTag besides enhancing user convenience and fostering good governance through integration of technology. The Indian Highways and Management Company (IHMCL), under the administrative control of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), on Wednesday held a workshop with fintech companies to explore innovative applications of the FASTag system. 'The objective of the workshop was to gather insights from leading fintech players on various aspects such as regulatory compliance, grievance redressal, security, and non-toll applications of FASTag to expand its use and support its next phase of growth,' the ministry said in a statement issued after the meeting. The workshop also aimed at building awareness among the fintech companies about multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling to encourage their active participation in this technology-driven transformation of tolling infrastructure, the ministry added. MLFF tolling is a barrier-less tolling that enables transactions through reading of FASTag and vehicle registration number (VRN) by high performance RFID readers and automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. Live Events The national electronic toll collection (NETC) FASTag programme operates across 1,728 toll plazas (1,113 national highways and 615 state highways), contributing to 98.5% of toll payments. India has roughly 110.4 million FASTags issued by over 38 banks. 'The FASTag ecosystem has immense potential, not just for tolling, but as a foundation for seamless digital travel experiences across the country,' road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said. 'Through collaboration with fintechs and other stakeholders, we aim to expand the utility of FASTag into a robust platform that will enhance user convenience, streamline transport and mobility services, and bring greater efficiency to the sector,' Gadkari added. According to road secretary V Umashankar, the essence of this workshop is to look at the toll collection mechanisms and how to make it cashless, convenient, time-efficient, fraud-free, and error-free tolling in a collaborative manner. 'We envision fintech as a provider of innovation and the government will be the facilitator to create an end product that will provide a better experience to the road user,' he added. New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Data traffic per smartphone user in India is projected to grow to 62 GB per month by 2030 from current levels of 32 GB per month which is still the highest in the world, according to Ericsson Mobility report The report stated that this significant growth will require a need for robust 5G infrastructure in the country. The report further adds that as of 2024, 4G remains the dominant subscription type with 53 per cent of the subscribers. It is forecast to decline to 230 million subscriptions by 2030, as users continue migrating to 5G. The sharp increase is driven by growing 5G internet penetration, affordable smartphones, and a rising appetite for video and digital services across urban and rural markets. Underpinned by strong population coverage, increasing data consumption, and accelerating Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) deployments, 5G penetration will continue with robust growth. By December 2024, 5G subscriptions in the country reached 290 million, representing 24 per cent of total mobile subscriptions. This figure is projected to climb to around 980 million by 2030, accounting for 75 per cent of all mobile subscriptions. Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India, said, "At Ericsson, we are proud to support the country's digitalisation based on the strong 4G and 5G infrastructure that we have set up in the country together with our partners, the communication service providers, that is enabling connectivity and driving inclusive growth in the country." On the global front, the 5G subscriptions are forecast to reach 6.3 billion by 2030, and will make up two-thirds of all mobile subscriptions. It is projected that Western Europe will have the highest 5G subscription penetration in 2030 at 93 per cent, followed closely by North America at 91 per cent and the Global Capability Centres (GCC) at 90 per cent. The report adds that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly becoming a significant selling point for smartphones. Efforts are being made to expand AI beyond the high-end segment to enable the services for a broader market. With the growth of AI applications and model complexity, tasks will be computed both on the device and in the network. This will put uplink capabilities and latency more into the focus of both application service providers and communication service providers, thereby adding to 5G subscriptions, it said. India has made large-scale mid-band deployments and reached around 95 per cent of its population covered by 5G network by 2024 end. According to the government data, since its launch in October 2022, 5G services have been rolled out in all states/UTs across the country and presently it is available in 99.6 per cent of the districts in the country.

Cabinet clears Rs 3,626 crore Pune Metro phase-2 to boost east-west connectivity

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, clearing two elevated corridors--Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi--as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi line, aimed at boosting East-West connectivity and linking key suburbs, IT hubs, and transport nodes across the city, as per the Cabinet's statement. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B), as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1. These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years, the statement read. The estimated project cost is Rs 3626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies. This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen East-West mass transit in Pune. According to the statement, these extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network. The new corridors will also integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) to enable seamless multimodal urban travel. Under long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be integrated at Chandani Chowk, while those from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, allowing passengers to easily access Pune's Metro system. These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast, and eco-friendly mobility options, it further read. After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057. The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will execute all civil, electro-mechanical, and related works. Pre-construction activities such as topographical survey and detailed design consultancy have already commenced. This strategic expansion is poised to unlock Pune's economic potential, enhance its urban transport infrastructure, and contribute significantly to sustainable and inclusive development across the metropolitan region, the statement added.
