Power-packed David slams 83 as Australia beat South Africa in 1st T20
After being sent in, the hosts were all out for 178 on the final delivery of their 20 overs in the first game of international cricket in Australia's tropical north for 17 years.
Cameron Green (35 off 13) was the only other batsman to get going, with left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka bagging 4-20 as South Africa bowled out Australia for the first time in a T20.
But David's phenomenal innings proved enough, with the Proteas restricted to 161-9 in reply. That was despite a battling 71 from Ryan Rickelton, who fell to a spectacular Glenn Maxwell catch on the boundary.
Josh Hazlewood took 3-27 and Ben Dwarshuis 3-26.
"Great way to start the series," skipper Mitchell Marsh said after Australia's ninth T20 victory in a row.
"Certainly we want guys like David to come out and bat the way he did, he was the difference."
Backing up from a recent 5-0 series sweep against the West Indies, Australia signalled their intent early with Marsh slamming a six off the first ball.
But he lost opening partner Travis Head (two) and Josh Inglis (golden duck) in the space of three deliveries and then skied Kagiso Rabada on 13, with Maphaka taking a tricky catch before Green and David let loose.
They put on a quickfire 40 for the fourth wicket before Green was undone by a slower ball from Lungi Ngidi.
Australia were in trouble on 75-6 when Mitch Owen was out for two and dangerman Maxwell went for one.
But David dug in and, with Dwarshuis (17), added 59 for the seventh wicket.
David was dropped by Tristan Stubbs on 56, although Stubbs made amends by holding the catch that finally removed the big Australian after a power-packed knock.
South Africa's chase started badly with skipper Aiden Markram out to Hazlewood in the first over, and they had lost three wickets for 48 by the sixth over.
Rickelton and Stubbs (37) knuckled down in a threatening 72-run stand but Hazlewood struck again with two wickets in an over to shatter their momentum.
South Africa's hopes were all but over when Adam Zampa matched Hazlewood's feat in the next over.
"It got close, but we were pretty far from our best tonight," Markram said.
The second of the three-game series is in Darwin on Tuesday.

That moment seemed to lead to some of the nervousness within the ground that Amorim referenced ahead of the game, but his side's refreshed approach and personnel helped lift the mood. Mbeumo saw a shot deflect wide before Dorgu followed a burst down the left with a fierce shot that hit the outside of the far post. Cunha looked like United's biggest threat and showed tenacity and confidence in the 32nd minute when his rampaging run from his own half led him to burst through Arsenal bodies and get a shot on Raya's goal. The goalkeeper comfortably dealt with that attempt and another from distance, but he had to be at his best to get a fingertip on the Brazil international's low drive from an acute angle as half-time approached.

Haaland, Reijnders and Cherki star for Manchester City in memorable start to season
Manchester City began their Premier League campaign in memorable fashion as Erling Haaland struck twice in a crushing 4-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. New signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki also netted debut goals for Pep Guardiola's revamped team as they look to improve on last season's disappointing third-place finish. Haaland, who has scored in all four season-opening games during his spell in England's top flight, struck in the 34th minute when Reijnders chipped a ball through to Rico Lewis who sent in a low cross for the Norwegian to tap home. Reijnders scored three minutes later and Haaland completed his brace in the 61st minute when Oscar Bobb pulled the ball back for him to fire a low drive past Jose Sa. Cherki completed the rout after 81 minutes to cap an emphatic start to the season for City, who won the title four years in a row from 2021-24. It was a great day for City's new signings as Reijnders played a part in the first three goals. Coach Guardiola made Reijnders a priority signing from AC Milan after playmaker Kevin De Bruyne's departure. While it may be premature to suggest City have found the ideal replacement for De Bruyne, it was a very promising showing from Reijnders. His presence brought dynamism to a City side that also raised eyebrows in other areas. Most notably, goalkeeper James Trafford was handed a debut and Ederson - described as "number one" by manager Guardiola this week despite speculation over his future - was missing from the squad altogether. The club, however, later confirmed the Brazilian's absence was due to illness, with the 31-year-old suffering from gastroenteritis. John Stones returned in defence for his first appearance since February and another new recruit, Rayan Ait-Nouri, featured against the club he left in the summer. It was an emotional occasion for Wolves as they paid a series of tributes before and during the game to Diogo Jota, their former striker who died last month following a car accident. Before facing City, Wolves fans displayed a giant tifo of Jota, who played two seasons in the Premier League with the West Midlands club before joining Liverpool in 2020. A banner under the tifo in his memory read 'We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold,' and fans at Molineux Stadium chanted his name after a moment's applause was held while a Portuguese flag was flown.
