Potential evidence revealed in preliminary hearing for suspect in Ashley Elkins' case
Friday was day three of the preliminary hearing for the accused killer of Warren mother, Ashley Elkins, who has been missing since January. The hearing started with obscure sounds coming from the suspect, DeAndre Booker, who was in court virtually. Booker is charged with first-degree premeditated murder, tampering with evidence, disinterment or mutilation of a dead body and concealing the death of an individual. He is also charged with lying to police in a related case. Booker had the option to appear in person, but chose not to for the second time. Elkins's family reported the 30-year-old missing on Jan. 3. Investigators allege that Booker, who they say is Elkins's ex-boyfriend, killed the mother of two in his Roseville apartment before disposing of her body. Despite searches, including in a landfill, her body has not been found. On Friday, two people took the stand, including Payne Barksdale, who says she is Booker's adopted niece and a forensic scientist. "Whenever I needed anything, I could call him and he's there, " Barksdale said in court. Barksdale testified that the two had not spoken for around a decade until last year. She says Booker asked her to move his co-worker's car to a different apartment; it's unclear whose car it was. Barksdale said that this happened in January, the same month Elkins went missing. "He said the cops were hot in that area, so with me having a license, if I were to be pulled over, he said I wouldn't have any trouble," she said. After the two dropped off the car, Barksdale said Booker showed her around his apartment. She told the courtroom that when returning to the apartment, she had to use the restroom, to which Booker told her to wait until he finished cleaning it. That same bathroom was the focus of Michigan State Police forensic scientist Toni Grusser's findings. Grusser showed prosecutors pictures of multiple locations within Booker's apartment that tested positive for blood. He testified that the lab was unable to confirm who the blood belongs to and how long it's been there. The next preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 22.

Puerto Rico police charge a suspect in the recent killing of a US tourist
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A 37-year-old man with a criminal record turned himself into police on Friday and was charged in the recent killing of a U.S. tourist who had flown to Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny's residency. Kalel Jorell Martínez Bristol faces charges including first-degree murder, according to a statement from Puerto Rico's Justice Department. Police have said the 25-year-old victim, Kevin Mares of New York, was an innocent bystander when he was struck by a bullet early Sunday while at a nightspot with friends in the seaside community of La Perla. Authorities accused Martínez of pulling out a gun and firing it while arguing with people near Mares. Two people, a brother and a sister who live in La Perla, were injured. Defense attorney Pedro Rivera told reporters that he was 'very surprised' authorities didn't file attempted murder charges, saying that casts doubt over the entire case. Martínez Bristol is being held on an $800,000 bond. The community of La Perla is located on the outskirts of Old San Juan and once served as Puerto Rico's biggest distribution point for heroin. It became popular with tourists after Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featured the community in their hit, 'Despacito.' But isolated violence persists. In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after police said a person told them to stop filming inside the community. Then in April 2024, a 24-year-old tourist from Delaware was killed and his body set on fire after police said he and a friend were attacked following a drug purchase. Police said the victims were trying to take pictures of La Perla after being warned not to do so.

Man charged after shooting at Miami boxing gym during sparring session
A Miami man is facing attempted murder charges after police say he opened fire Thursday evening inside a boxing gym during sparring sessions, injuring another man. Witnesses told police the shooting began when the suspect, 41-year-old Boyise Denmark, became upset that his son was sparring against someone he believed was bigger and older. "I believe there was to be probable cause for second-degree murder," a Miami-Dade County judge said during Denmark's first court appearance. The incident happened at the House of Pain Gym on Seventh Avenue, according to Miami police. Officers said the victim was found with gunshot wounds to the arm, abdomen, thigh, knee and buttocks. Witnesses reported that Denmark grew aggressive and argumentative with the victim over the sparring match. The two eventually shook hands, but tensions flared again when a boxing coach allegedly slapped an opposing boxer, sparking another altercation. Police say Denmark then shot the victim. "Sir, I'm entering a stay away order from the alleged victim," the judge told Denmark, who did not speak during the hearing. Police said Denmark was still at the scene when they arrived and had a gun in his waistband. He has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, using a firearm during the commission of a felony, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. "I'm granting the state's motion for pre-trial detention and holding him with no bond," the judge said. The victim remains at Ryder Trauma Center. Police have not provided an update on his condition. CBS News Miami contacted Denmark's public defender, but they declined to comment. Denmark's next court date is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m.
