Dennis Hauger Stays Perfect with Barber Victory from Pole

Rookie Dennis Hauger remained flawless in this young INDY NXT by Firestone season, winning the Grand Prix of Alabama on Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park.
Andretti Global driver Hauger, from Norway, led all 35 laps from the pole in a repeat performance of his season-opening win from the No. 1 qualifying position March 2 at St. Petersburg, Florida. So far, Hauger has led all 79 laps of competition this season and every session except for one practice at St. Petersburg – he was second – in the INDYCAR development series.

'That was a good weekend, for sure,' Hauger said. 'It felt really good out there. I was trying to take care of the rear tires, especially in the beginning. After that, I was just trying to keep it consistent.
'The pace was really there. Andretti gave me a good car all weekend. I'm super happy for all of us.'
Hauger drove his No. 28 Rental Group car to a 11.0196-second victory over 17-year-old Evagoras Papasavvas, who made an impressive first career start in the No. 24 HMD Motorsports car. Lochie Hughes completed the podium filled with rookie drivers, placing third in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship machine.
Veteran Myles Rowe finished fourth – tying his career best in the series – in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy car, while veteran Josh Pierson finished a career-best fifth in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports machine.
Two caution periods were the only speed bumps for Formula 2 veteran Hauger on Sunday on the 17-turn, 2.3-mile natural terrain road course. He was never challenged and pulled away from the field on restarts on Lap 4 and Lap 13.
Veteran Caio Collet, who started second, kept Hauger honest in the early going. Collet stayed within about a second of the leader until he dropped down the order when his No. 76 HMD Motorsports car developed a throttle problem during the second caution period, triggered on Lap 11 when the No. 29 Grupo Indi car of Salvador de Alba and the No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing machine of Bryce Aron collided in Turn 5.
Papasavvas then inherited second place. He never threatened Hauger but held off Hughes, Rowe and Pierson over the closing laps to cap a strong series debut. The gap between second-place Papasavvas and fifth-place Pierson at the finish was just 1.8332 seconds.
The series has shifted into high gear with this event, as a doubleheader will take place this weekend on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Race 1 of the Indianapolis Grand Prix is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET Friday, May 9, with Race 2 at 1 p.m. ET Saturday, May 10. FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network will provide live coverage of both 35-lap races.

NASCAR to have podium celebrations for top three finishers in Cup, Xfinity races in Mexico
For the first time after a Cup points race, NASCAR will honor the top three finishers with a podium celebration next weekend in Mexico. While podium celebrations are common in other forms of racing, including Formula One and IndyCar, NASCAR celebrates only the winner in its U.S.-based series. The only time NASCAR has had a podium celebration in Cup was for the Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum exhibition races from 2022-24. That was done in a nod to the historic venue having hosted the Olympics. The top three drivers received medals — gold for the winner, silver for second place and bronze for third place. NASCAR will have podium celebrations for the top three finishers for its Xfinity Series and Cup Series races June 14-15 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. That weekend will represent the first international Cup points race since 1958. 'For this historic weekend, it felt appropriate to recognize the heritage of Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and give a nod to the traditional international motorsports celebrations,' NASCAR stated to NBC Sports. 'There are currently no plans for podium-style celebrations following the Mexico City event.' The NASCAR Mexico Series also will have podium finishes after its races June 13-14 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez as it does for all its races. Dustin Long, While podium finishes are not an official statistic for NASCAR, Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson each have had the most top-three finishes this season. Both have six in the first 14 Cup points races of the year. Bell has three wins, two runner-ups and a third-place finish. Larson has three wins, one runner-up and two third-place results. Denny Hamlin and William Byron are next with five podium results each. Hamlin has two wins, two runner-ups and a third-place finish. Byron has one win, three runner-ups and a third-place result. Ryan Blaney, who won last weekend's race at Nashville Superspeedway. completes the top five. He has three podiums, scoring one win, no runner-up results and two third-place finishes.

Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal is not happy with the current state of NBA basketball. O'Neal, 53, lamented how the game had gone "soft." "The league is getting soft, the game is getting soft and it's going to take a couple of people to bring it back," O'Neal said during a recent appearance on "New Heights." The 15-time NBA All-Star does not like the trend of centers shooting 3-pointers and prefers the big men dominating in the paint. "Like, I hate big guys shooting (3-pointers). Victor Wembanyama is a great player, but I would love to just see him dominate so much that people start complaining, and they change the rules like when I did. I could shoot, but I'm not going to shoot a (3-pointer)," O'Neal said. O'Neal also expressed his disdain for the current NBA All-Star game format. "Our NBA All-Star format is terrible. I don't know who's in charge, but it's terrible," O'Neal said. The NBA's format this season had four different teams in a mini-tournament drafted by O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith. The fourth team in the format was the winner of the Rising Stars challenge. Over the years, the NBA has tinkered with the format in hopes of getting more effort from players. Regardless of the format, the players have not given 100% effort during the game and the product has declined. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said next year's All-Star game will be USA vs. World, but he is "not exactly sure what the format will be yet" during a recent appearance on "Breakfast Ball."
