UAE to host Asia Cup cricket

NEW DELHI: The United Arab Emirates will host this year's T20 Asia Cup tournament in September, organizers said Saturday, ending the uncertainty over its fate amid spiralling tensions between India and Pakistan. The neighbors have not met on either side's soil in a bilateral series since 2012, and only play each other in international tournaments on neutral grounds as part of a compromise deal. But already-frosty relations took a turn for the worse this year when the two nuclear rivals fought an intense four-day conflict, their worst standoff in decades. More than 70 people were killed in missile, drone and artillery fire on both sides. The conflict was triggered by an April 22 attack on civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi accused Pakistan of backing — a charge Islamabad denies. The Asia Cup is played under the aegis of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), which is currently headed by Pakistan cricket chief Mohsin Naqvi. 'I am delighted to confirm the dates for the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 in UAE,' said Naqvi on X. I am delighted to confirm the dates for the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 in UAE. The prestigious tournament will take place from September 9th to 28th. We look forward to a spectacular display of cricket! Detailed Schedule will be out soon. #Cricketwins — Mohsin Naqvi (@MohsinnaqviC42) July 26, 2025 'The prestigious tournament will take place from September 9th to 28th.' The five full members of the ACC — Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka — earned automatic qualification to the tournament. They are to be joined by Hong Kong, Oman and the United Arab Emirates — the teams that secured their spots by finishing in the top three of the ACC men's Premier Cup. The previous edition of the event was in a 50-over format, but this year's tournament was scheduled as a shorter-format event in preparation for next year's T20 World Cup in India. India and Pakistan have fought three full-fledged wars since being carved out of the subcontinent's partition in 1947 and that rivalry is often reflected on the cricket field.

Asia Cup 2025 cricket tournament moved to UAE amid India-Pakistan tensions

ISLAMABAD: Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi confirmed on Saturday the 2025 Men's Asia Cup will be staged in the United Arab Emirates in September following a contentious venue dispute that threatened to derail the event. India was due to host the T20 tournament, but rising tensions with Pakistan, exacerbated by a military standoff in May, and disagreements over the ACC's Annual General Meeting in Dhaka led to weeks of uncertainty. New Delhi initially refused to attend the meeting and questioned the neutrality of Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board and serves as the country's interior minister. However, Indian authorities later joined the gathering via video link. 'I am delighted to confirm the dates for the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 in UAE,' Naqvi announced in a social media post on X. 'The prestigious tournament will take place from September 9th to 28th.' 'We look forward to a spectacular display of cricket,' he added. 'Detailed schedule will be out soon.' Last year's Asia Cup in 2023 was marred by similar discord, as Pakistan was the official host and India refused to travel. The ACC then implemented a hybrid model, splitting matches between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. All India fixtures— including the final— were held in Sri Lanka, while Pakistan hosted only non-India group games. The workaround preserved Pakistan's hosting rights while accommodating India's participation. The ACC has reached a similar compromise this year, with the UAE, an established neutral venue, stepping in to host all matches. The tournament in September will feature eight teams, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Oman and Hong Kong. A group-stage clash between India and Pakistan is likely, with the event also serving as a key warm-up for the ICC T20 World Cup in early 2026.

Razane Jammal shares behind-the-scenes look at ‘The Sandman'

DUBAI: British Lebanese actress Razane Jammal took to social media this weekend to share behind-the-scenes shots from her time filming Netflix's 'The Sandman.' For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @ The second season of the show landed on the streaming platform in July in two parts, with the second half of the season premiering this weekend. 'Dream dangerously and beware of the kindly (not so kindly) ones,' Jammal captioned her post on Instagram. A post shared by Razane Jammal رزان جمّال (@razanejammal) The carousel of photos shows Jammal in the a hair and makeup studio, as well as on location in a mist-covered field. In the role that arguably shot her to stardom, Jammal played Lyta Hall in 2022's 'The Sandman,' based on the legendary graphic novels — and she reprised her role in the latest season. In season one, her character dreams of her dead husband each night, slowly realizing that he is not a figment of her imagination but is hiding out in the dream world. It is a part that Jammal managed to play truthfully with subtlety — a subtlety for which she credited her mother in a previous interview with Arab News. 'I've always been extra, and my mom was far more subtle than I am. I had to fine-tune myself to vibrate on her frequency, a frequency that was very sweet and very raw, and vulnerable and nurturing. I took that from her. 'I grew up having a simple, community-based life in a place where you have 500 mothers and everyone feeds you and you feel safe — even if it's not safe at all. At the same time we went through so many traumas, from civil wars to assassinations to losing all our money in another financial crisis.' 'The Sandman' is based on novels written by British author Neil Gaiman. This is the final season of the series, with Netflix announcing the cancellation of 'The Sandman' after Gaiman faced a civil lawsuit accusing him of rape and sexual assault earlier this year, amid more accusations of sexual misconduct. ''The Sandman' series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,' 'The Sandman' showrunner Allan Heinberg said in a statement to Variety in January, indicating that the reason behind the show's cancellation was a lack of script material. Several other projects, including a stage adaptation of 'Coraline,' were cancelled in the wake of the allegations. Gaiman has denied the allegations.
