East residents warned of theft out motor vehicles
Local security companies, CSI and Alpha Security, have raised alarms following an increase in theft out of motor vehicles in parking lots across the east of Pretoria.
This warning comes after a recent incident where a laptop was stolen from a locked car while the victims were dining at a local fast food restaurant.
Gerhard Rossouw, operations manager at CSI Security, said the syndicates behind these crimes operate with precision.
He stated that they are seeing more and more of these types of incidents.
'Motorists must be aware of their surroundings when they park.'
'Always make sure you lock your vehicle and that no one jams the signal as you walk away,' Rossouw said.
Roelie Hendriks, director at Alpha Security, confirmed that the recent case was not a typical smash-and-grab.
'It's not a smash-and-grab. It's theft out of a motor vehicle. The car wasn't damaged.
It was opened and items taken while the victims were inside the restaurant,' Hendriks said.
According to Hendriks, signal jamming and Bluetooth scanning are some of the methods criminals use to identify which vehicles have electronics inside.
He said people often don't switch off their laptops when they leave them in their cars.
'While the laptop is on, it still runs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the background, and thieves use scanners to pick up those signals,' he explained.
Hendriks added that laptops can easily be detected by these scanners as criminals walk past cars, deciding which one to target.
'Never leave your laptop or electronics inside your vehicle. If you absolutely must, power it off completely and switch off all connectivity,' he advised.
He said parking lots are a prime target, particularly when car guards are distracted.
Hendriks stated that car guards check their phones and lose focus.
'Criminals just wait for the right moment, and it takes them under two minutes to do the job,' Hendriks said.
Another growing concern is signal jamming, where criminals use devices to intercept a car's locking signal.
'You would think you've locked your car, but the signal never reached the vehicle. Always double-check by testing the door handle,' Hendriks added.
Alpha Security teams are using signal jamming detectors to monitor activity in high-risk areas.
'These devices help us identify when and where jamming is happening. However, the best defence is still personal vigilance,' Hendriks said.
Tips from security companies include:
– Always power down laptops and devices fully if left in a car (though not recommended).
– Physically check your car doors after locking to confirm they're secure.
– Be aware of your surroundings, and don't get distracted by your phone.
– Never assume you're safe just because you're in a busy or 'secure' area.
'We're living in a time where the inattentive are easy targets. Stay alert; this is the Wild West out here.'
No arrests have been made in the recent laptop theft incident, and security companies are still investigating.

They were taken to an open field near the R102, also known as Airport Road, where the ten-year-old girl was allegedly raped,' read the police statement. The other girl managed to escape and informed her family about the incident. Several community safety structures and local security companies began searching for the victim. The police said, 'The search took the team to Syferfontein near Pacaltsdorp in George, where the man was tracked down.' Police investigations led to a residence between the N2 and Airport Road, where they found the victim. She was taken to a medical facility for care. The suspect is currently in police custody and will appear in court once charged. A man was sentenced to eight years in prison for raping an 18-year-old girl in November 2023. According to a police statement, the suspect, Gavin Hendriks, held the victim at knifepoint and raped her while she was on her way back from an establishment. After she complained about doing his work during court proceedings, Judge Sharmaine Balton ordered Zithulele Mkhize to physically appear in court on Thursday. He brought a cozy chair that captivated everyone, including court employees. The massage chair with Bluetooth was positioned at the back of the courtroom. When the accused, counsel, and court employees first arrived in court, they were enthralled by the chair at the entrance and would start laughing as soon as they spotted Mkhize. Next Stay Close ✕ Zithulele Mkhize's chair that sparked laughter at the Durban High Court. Image: Nomonde Zondi Counsel from neighbouring courtrooms stopped by to observe the chair. Some accused would sit in it during breaks. Mkhize listened to a State witness testify in court while sporting a black memory foam neck cushion and black clothing that matched his chair. As court proceedings started, He would occasionally get up to scratch himself. According to a medical report that was read into the record, Mkhize must not sit for longer hours. Judge Balton on Wednesday had ordered that Mkhize would be allowed to bring a comfortable chair and could stand up when he needed to. The State noted his presence, and counsel appointed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), advocate Reshma Athmaram, who was not amused by the chair, said she noted that his chair has electronic devices. 'May the court remind him that there are to be no recordings of court proceedings,' she said. Advocate Willie Lombard replied by saying that the chair was not capable of that, and the buttons were for controlling it. He stated that his client was present in court both physically and mentally. Outside court, a source close to Mkhize said he abides by the court rules and he has never shown any disrespect to the State. 'Since 2019, he has respected the court and continues to do so,' the source said. Additionally, the source said on Wednesday, Mkhize had gone to the Hillcrest Hospital before court proceedings started due to the pain he was experiencing. 'He was put on a drip and sent home so he could make it for court proceedings on time,' she said. She added that because of the cold weather, he had a blanket over him. The source said Mkhize was taking medication and on physio treatment for disjointed disks in the spine as a result of sitting on the court benches over the past five years. 'He is continuing with treatment while waiting for a verdict on a possible operation.' She added that Mkhize intends not to go against anything that the court says, and that he does not want to derail the matter, although doctors have instructed him not to sit for longer hours. 'In respecting the court, he has gone against the doctors' instructions,' she said. The 22 accused in this matter are facing multiple charges, including money laundering, racketeering, corruption, and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Municipal Systems Act relating to a R300 million Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender. So far in the trial, the new witness has testified about her role in the municipality. The trial continues.
