Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli's upcoming visit to India is expected to be "instrumental" in creating an atmosphere of trust between the two countries, foreign relations experts and diplomats said on Sunday.Speaking at an interaction programme on "Nepal-India relations in the context of upcoming visit of Prime Minister Oli to India," former diplomat and foreign affairs expert Dr Shambhu Simkhada noted that Nepal and India enjoy cordial relations and deep friendly ties."As I have learnt that Prime Minister Oli is embarking on a visit to the southern neighbour, the visit should be instrumental in creating an atmosphere of trust between the two countries," he said.During Oli's visit, efforts should be made to resolve issues, if any, between the two nations through high-level political dialogue, Simkhada said.At the event, foreign relations expert Mohan Lohani said, "India is moving ahead in the areas of economic prosperity, development and technological advancement. Nepal should try to benefit from the progress made by our southern neighbour."Another foreign policy expert Nischal Nath Pandey advised PM Oli to use the land route during his visit, stressing that it would give him the opportunity to learn about the "huge progress" made by India in various fields, including road transport.During the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has made remarkable progress in development and road connectivity, and Nepal should learn from the experiences gained by India, Pandey said.Prime Minister Oli is embarking on a two-day official visit to India in mid-September, according to Foreign Ministry officials. However, the date and the programmes of the visit are yet to be announced officially.Oli, the chairperson of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) - popular as the CPN-UML - had assumed the office of prime minister for the fourth time last July.He had chosen to visit China for his maiden foreign visit, breaking the tradition of visiting India as the first destination after assuming the post of prime minister.

The last date for filing nominations is August 21, and the deadline to withdraw nominations is August 25.

Differences must not become disputes, competition: Jaishankar to Wang
India and China on Monday discussed economic and trade issues, including resumption of border trade and direct flights, with New Delhi again flagging concerns over Beijing's curbs on the export of rare earth minerals. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi landed in New Delhi on Monday evening for a two-day visit and held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. In his opening remarks at the delegation-level talks, Jaishankar said that 'the basis for any positive momentum' in India-China ties 'is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas'. He emphasised that it was essential for the de-escalation process to move forward. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship,' Jaishankar told Wang, 'our two nations now seek to move ahead'. This required a candid and constructive approach from both sides, he said. Jaishankar underlined that the two countries must be guided by the three mutuals – 'mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.' 'Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping's meeting on October 23, 2024, in the Russian city of Kazan on the sidelines of the Brics Summit paved the way for de-escalation in border areas after the Galwan Valley clashes of June 2020. Jaishankar and Wang's discussions will also lay the groundwork for Modi's visit to Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on August 31 and September 1, where he is expected to meet Xi Jinping. Wang and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will hold the 24th round of the Special Representatives' talks on boundary issues on Tuesday. Wang will also call on Prime Minister Modi in the evening. At Monday's meeting, Jaishankar said discussions would also cover river data sharing and people-to-people contacts. 'I would like to follow up on some particular concerns that I had brought up with you when I visited China in July,' he told Wang, alluding to India's request that Beijing lift restrictions on rare earth exports. The two sides also discussed global developments. 'We seek a fair, balanced and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia. Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day,' Jaishankar said. 'In the current environment, there is clearly the imperative of maintaining and enhancing stability in the global economy as well,' he noted. Combating terrorism in all its forms was another priority, he added. Wang's visit is the first by a Chinese minister since Modi and Xi's meeting in Kazan, Jaishankar observed. 'It is our expectation that our discussions would contribute to building a stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship between India and China, one that serves both our interests and addresses our concerns,' he said, wishing China a successful SCO Summit that it is hosting. In Beijing, China's foreign ministry said Wang's visit to India aimed at working with New Delhi to deliver on understandings reached between the two leaders and decisions taken during earlier border talks. Wang is scheduled to visit Pakistan later this week.

FS Vikram Misri concludes two-day visit to Nepal, meets top leaders
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday wrapped up his two-day visit to Nepal during which he met the country's top leadership and discussed progress in different areas of bilateral cooperation. Misri, who arrived here at the invitation of his Nepalese counterpart Amrit Bahadur Rai, called on President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba during his visit. "He conveyed to them greetings from the leadership in India and briefed them on the progress being made in various aspects of the mutually-beneficial bilateral cooperation between the two countries," the Indian Embassy said in a press release on Monday. Misri also handed over a formal invitation to Prime Minister Oli from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit India on mutually convenient dates, it said. He also held wide-ranging discussions with Rai on Sunday and reviewed the progress made in various bilateral initiatives and discussed opportunities for further collaboration, including possible outcomes that could form a part of the agenda of PM Oli's forthcoming visit to India. The foreign secretary also met Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel and handed over defence stores and equipment, including Light Strike Vehicles (LSVs), critical care medical equipment and military animals to the Nepali Army. "During the various engagements, both sides noted with satisfaction the concrete progress in recent years in diverse areas of bilateral cooperation, including physical connectivity, digital connectivity, defence & security and energy cooperation," the press release said. Foreign Secretary Misri also met other senior political leaders, including Nepali Congress President and former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman and former PM Pushpakamal Dahal 'Prachanda'. Nepal is a priority partner of India under its Neighbourhood First policy. The foreign secretary's visit continued the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries and helped in advancing bilateral ties further, the embassy said.
