David Brom, convicted of killing his family in 1988, to be released from prison at end of month
David Brom is scheduled to be released to a Twin Cities halfway house on July 29.
He served more than 35 years for the 1988 murders of his parents and two younger siblings. He was 16 at the time.
Brom was sentenced to three life sentences, but became eligible for parole under a Minnesota law passed in 2023 that ended juvenile life without parole sentences.
Current Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson was one of the first responders called to the scene more than 37 years ago. He released a message reacting to the news of Brom's release.
"I cannot stop what is already in motion, and I, we, as the public, must trust the parole board's decision and must hope Mr. Brom is ready for this transition in his life," Togerson said. "I'm very pleased to hear that, but it is still hard for me to accept and forget the sights and smells of what I saw that Thursday evening in 1988."
Brom will still be under supervision and be subject to GPS monitoring after his release.
Twenty-eight states have banned juvenile life without parole sentences, according to the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth.

Second suspect arrested for deadly Jurupa Valley shooting
A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting that left a 21-year-old man dead in Jurupa Valley last Monday. The shooting happened at around 12:20 a.m. on July 14 near Golden West Avenue and Condor Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Upon arrival, deputies found a man, since identified as Jose Martinez-Contreras, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. Investigators identified Lorenzo Howse Jr., 19, of Bloomington as a suspect in the incident and took him into custody while serving a search warrant at his home on Friday. They were assisted by the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department. Howse was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. A second suspect was arrested on Sunday, deputies said. He was identified as 19-year-old Jurupa Valley resident Darnell White. He was also booked on suspicion of murder and robbery. New effort to find man's head after TV star charged
Police searching for a man's decapitated head have identified several key locations of interest near a coastal town. Authorities have been unable to find the entire remains of Julian Story, 39, after his dismembered body was discovered at Port Lincoln in South Australia on June 19. Tamika Sueann Rose Chesser, 34, a former Beauty and the Geek contestant, has been charged with his murder. Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said information received by the investigation team coupled with the use of specialist equipment has identified several additional search sites around Port Lincoln. "New search areas have been identified and by undertaking these renewed searches, we hope to find Julian's missing remains, which will give comfort to his family and allow them to peacefully lay him to rest," he said in a statement on Tuesday. Police searching for Mr Story's head has spanned Port Lincoln reserves, parks, bushland, the ocean, pier and bay areas and involved state emergency service volunteers, water police, divers and local patrols. Previous searches were paused on July 1 as police reviewed CCTV footage to pinpoint the movements of the ex-reality TV star accused of his murder. Police found Mr Story's body after firefighters were called to a Flinders Highway property to investigate reports of a blaze. Chesser, who police said had been in a relationship with Mr Story for several months, was arrested on June 19 after Mr Story's body was found at the couple's home. She was known to walk through back streets and parks in the Port Lincoln area with her dogs. Authorities are appealing for video from members of the public that might help the police investigation. 15-year-old boy stabbed to death near Vancouver law courts, police say
Vancouver police say they are investigating the murder of a 15-year-old boy who died after being stabbed Saturday night near the Vancouver Law Courts at Smithe and Hornby streets. "Vancouver police investigators have been working non-stop to secure evidence, identify witnesses, and find the person, or people, responsible for this murder," said Sgt. Steve Addison in a statement. Police said the victim, a Surrey resident, was stabbed sometime before 11:40 p.m. PT. A passerby called 911. Officers located the boy, who was treated by other first responders, on Hornby Street. The victim died in hospital early Sunday morning, said police. No arrests have been made, and police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area at the time to come forward. Police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time. Addison told reporters in a news conference on Monday that police may eventually choose to release surveillance footage of the area as they continue their investigation. He did not say if a suspect had been identified in the stabbing and urged anyone driving in the area between 11:25 p.m. and 11:40 p.m. to send dashcam video to told reporters Vancouver's downtown core was particularly busy on Saturday night, given the Celebration of Light fireworks event that had just wrapped up in the West End. "Lots of vehicle traffic in that block, it's downtown Vancouver, lots of cars driving around," he said. "And there may be people with dashcam video, who were passing through the area at the time, who perhaps unknowingly captured something that might be of use to our investigators." Addison said he wasn't aware of whether the victim had attended the Celebration of Light event, and there was an altercation prior to the stabbing. While the stabbing was not related to the Celebration of Light, he said that police would be changing their security plans for the next leg of the event on Wednesday after a few fights were reported as crowds were leaving on Saturday. "That may include additional officers, placing officers at more strategic locations so that we have that additional presence in places where we had some challenges ... so that we can address those and mitigate those concerns," he said.
