Happy first birthday to Moo Deng, the viral pygmy hippo
It's a major milestone for Moo Deng, the tiny hippo with an oversized personality who nearly broke the internet last summer.
On Thursday, the pygmy hippopotamus marked her first birthday at her zoo in Chon Buri, Thailand.
Moo Deng became a viral sensation soon after her zookeepers introduced her on social media last year, inspiring lots of memes, fan art and TikTok clips.
Some of her TikTok videos have millions upon millions of views.
And what's a birthday without a party?
The Khao Kheow Open Zoo is throwing her a four-day-long celebration.
Events include a hippo-sized fruit platter for her and her mother to snack on, a photo exhibition, a charity auction of Moo Deng items and even a parade.
According to the zoo's director, about 12,000 fans flocked to the zoo by Thursday afternoon, the opening day of the celebrations, to join the party.
Moon Deng's impact
Moo Deng's caretaker, Atthapon Nundee, says that the attention on the hippo has brought more visitors to the zoo. The extra revenue has allowed the zoo to make improvements.
'Moo Deng has made more people know about the zoo and they travel here,' he said.
But there have also been some downsides to the influx of new guests.
Back in September 2024, shortly after Moo Deng was introduced to the public, some visitors were too excited to see the hippo.
Some would splash water on her, or throw objects, trying to get her attention.
That seemed to be a distant memory on Thursday as Moo Deng dug into her birthday feast.

The hippo and her mother, 26-year-old Jona, were served a 20-kilogram birthday cake of sorts — a fruit platter — that was so big, three zookeepers had to carry it into their enclosure.
The zoo has auctioned off some of Moo Deng's collectables, like a clay cast of her footprints and the blue, plastic bathtub she used as a baby.
It said proceeds from the auction will be used to support other animals.

Pair of shaggy Highland cattle make their debut at the Toronto Zoo
Two delightfully shaggy new faces will be on display at the Toronto Zoo starting on Friday. The nine-month-old brothers are Scottish Highland cattle, with long, woolly, reddish coats and fringe over their eyes. The zoo's manager of wildlife care, Marc Brandson, says the two were born and raised at a local Ontario farm before moving to the zoo about a month ago. The pair weigh around 300 to 400 pounds, and are expected to grow to twice their size, he said. He says they completed a quarantine period and now live just outside the Eurasia Wilds area of the zoo. Membership holders can visit the brothers at a pre-screening on Thursday, while other visitors can see them starting Friday. Brandson says there is "a lot of excitement" around the pair because of how popular the Highland breed already is. He says the zoo is hoping to have the brothers walk through the public area of the zoo as part of its animal ambassador program, which can give visitors a closer look at certain animals. "Each and every day, our outreach and discovery staff are working to get them to that level," he said. "Having a bonded pair is a really great social situation for Highland cows. These brothers are very calm and they are gaining confidence each and every day that they interact with their caregivers." Branson said the pair will be more active as the weather gets cooler. The brothers don't have names yet, and Brandson says the public should stay tuned on ways to contribute naming ideas.

Japanese pop idol Kenshin Kamimura convicted of indecent assault but avoids jail in Hong Kong
J-pop star Kenshin Kamimura arrives at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts to hear the verdict over his indecent assault case in Hong Kong on Aug. 13, 2025. (Chan Long Hei / AP Photo) HONG KONG — Japanese pop idol Kenshin Kamimura was found guilty of a charge of indecent assault on a female interpreter in a Hong Kong court Wednesday before some emotional fans. Kamimura, a former member of a Japanese boy group named ONE N' ONLY, was arrested in the southern Chinese city in March. In the same month, his contract was terminated due to a serious compliance violation. In April, he pleaded not guilty. He allegedly touched the interpreter's thigh repeatedly during a celebratory dinner at a restaurant. During the trial last month, the interpreter testified through a live video link that Kamimura had invited her to a bathroom elsewhere. After she dismissed the request and told him she had a boyfriend, Kamimura continued to touch her thigh, she said. The defense argued the interpreter exaggerated her claims and the alleged bathroom invitation might not have been based on improper motives. Judge Peter Yu handed down the conviction Wednesday, saying Kamimura touched the intrepreter in a caressing nature that implicitly carried a sexual undertone and had indecent intent. 'The defendant's acts are obviously disrespectful toward women,' Yu said. 'Such behaviour should be condemned.' In pleading for a lesser penalty, the defense said Kamimura previously had a promising future and paid a heavy price. After the verdict was announced, a few of Kamimura's fans wept in the courtroom. But Kamimura looked relieved and hugged his courtroom translator when the judge issued a fine of 15,000 Hong Kong dollars (about US$1,900) and no prison term. The maximum penalty for the charge is 10 years of imprisonment. The singer's supporters, including some from Japan and mainland China, formed long lines inside the court building to secure a seat in the main courtroom before the hearing. After the hearing, they waited outside to see Kamimura, who did not speak before leaving in a car. Others from mainland China who attended said they were not fans but wanted to learn more about the case, especially after seeing criticism of the female interpreter online. University student Betty Zhong from the Chinese city of Shenzhen said she was not a Kamimura fan but attended the court hearings in Hong Kong because a friend likes the J-pop idol and she wanted to know what happened. She said she was surprised Kamimura was charged during a visit to Hong Kong. 'News reports are not so comprehensive. When I come here, I can understand it holistically and the explanations from both sides,' she said. Kamimura also is an actor who appeared in several TV dramas including the boys' love series 'Our Youth' and the popular drama 'Ossan's Love Returns.' Kanis Leung, The Associated Press
