Xinjiang posts by Yale researcher put Chinese universities in line of online fire
Xinjiang and demanded an explanation from the institutes.
The latest in the line of fire is Central South University in Changsha, Hunan province. It has faced a barrage of online criticism since last Tuesday for having hosted Darius Longarino, who is a research scholar at Yale Law School and senior fellow at its Paul Tsai China Centre – a think tank that conducts China-related exchange activities and research.
Longarino, who has criticised China's policies in its western Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in the past, was invited by the university in June to deliver a lecture on sexual harassment cases in Chinese courts.
Central South University, along with at least two others that had invited Longarino for events in recent months have since taken down posts about those events from their websites.
Chinese search engines still display links to the pages, but clicking on them results in an error message indicating they are inaccessible.

The controversy snowballed after some social media users highlighted Longarino's posts on X (formerly Twitter) from 2019 to 2022, where he criticised Beijing's Xinjiang policies, including those affecting the rights of sexual and gender minorities.

Wang Yi arrives in India to bolster ties
Wang Yi arrives in India to bolster ties Wang Yi will hold talks with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during his visit to New Delhi. File photo: Reuters China's top diplomat landed in India on Monday, seeking to bolster long-fraught relations in the face of intense pressure and tariffs from the United States. Foreign Minister Wang Yi will hold talks with his counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and is also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his three-day visit to New Delhi. Modi, according to Indian media, might also visit China this month. India's foreign ministry said in a social media post that "important engagements of the India-China Special Representatives and on bilateral relations" were scheduled over the next two days. Restarting border trade across their icy and high-altitude Himalayan border is expected to feature high on Wang's agenda. Its resumption would be significant for its symbolism, and follows agreements to return direct flights and issue tourist visas. (AFP)

Trump is being put forward for Nobel Peace Prize, so he must be a top mediator. Right?
US President Donald Trump 's methods for mediating international conflicts may backfire and lead to more confrontation, experts in China have warned. Advertisement Trump's mediation tactics revealed a power politics approach and constituted ill-advised interference in the long term, Zhang Luwei, a research associate at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said in an article published on the institute's social media account last week. She said Trump was known for taking a high profile and being heavy-handed, with a mediation style that used America's dominant position to forcibly intervene in regional disputes and pressure conflicting parties into so-called ceasefire agreements. However, these peace deals might be temporary while failing to address deep-rooted grievances stemming from historical legacies and existing threats, which sowed seeds for long-term friction and confrontation, Zhang said. 'His diplomatic means reduce complex geopolitical conflicts to mere schoolyard fights. They show no respect for historical context, nor the strategic patience needed to resolve underlying disputes.'
