Manipal Hospitals seeks CCI nod to acquire Sahyadri Hospitals for about Rs 6,400 cr
The companies did not share the deal size, but industry sources estimate the transaction to be in the range of Rs 6,200-6,400 crore.
"The proposed transaction envisages the acquisition of up to 100 per cent shareholding by the acquirer (Manipal Hospitals Pvt Ltd) in the target (Sahyadri Hospitals Pvt Ltd) in multiple tranches," according to a notice filed with the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
Manipal Hospitals and Sahyadri Hospitals said the "proposed transaction does not have any impact on any relevant market in India, let alone any appreciable adverse effect on competition (AAEC), and therefore, the definition of the relevant product and geographic market may ultimately be left open. In any event, in order to aid and assist the CCI in its assessment".
Last month, Manipal Hospitals announced that it had inked definitive agreements with Ontario Teachers' for the acquisition.
The Bengaluru-based healthcare major said the acquisition of Sahyadri Hospitals will bring Manipal's total bed count to about 12,000, making it one of India's largest hospital networks.
The acquisition will add 11 hospitals to Manipal's network across Pune, Nashik, Ahilya Nagar and Karad, increasing its total number of hospitals to 49, it added.
Through this acquisition, Manipal said it will expand its presence in western India, in line with its strategy to augment its pan-India footprint.
"With the strong partnership of our valued stakeholders like Temasek and our other investors, we are excited to grow our operations and bring Manipal's trusted brand of quality healthcare to many more patients," Manipal Health Enterprises MD and CEO Dilip Jose said.
Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) Chairman Ranjan Pai said the acquisition will strengthen Manipal's presence in western India.
"With this expansion, Manipal Hospitals will have a network of approximately 12,000 beds nationwide, solidifying our position as one of the largest hospital chains in India," he added.
Manipal Hospitals is backed by Temasek, a global investment company, headquartered in Singapore, with a net portfolio value of around USD 324 billion as of March 31, 2025.
A global investor with net assets of USD 266.3 billion as of December 31, 2024, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board (Ontario Teachers') acquired a majority stake in Sahyadri in 2022.
The Pune-based hospital chain is now one of Maharashtra's largest, with 11 hospitals and over 1,400 beds.

NEW DELHI: India has once again missed the boat to enhance the underwater operational endurance and stealth of its latest Scorpene or Kalvari-class conventional submarines, with the already delayed air independent propulsion (AIP) system developed by DRDO still not ready for integration with the vessels. The first Scorpene submarine to be built at the Mazagon Docks (MDL) with French collaboration, INS Kalvari, which was commissioned in Dec 2017, will now complete her ongoing maintenance refit at the Mumbai naval dockyard without being retrofitted with the AIP plug as was originally planned, defence ministry sources told TOI. Under it, each submarine will undergo a complex project called "jumboisation", involving precision cutting of the hull, safe insertion of the AIP plug and then rejoining the structure to ensure the vessel is fully operational again. Unlike nuclear-powered submarines, which have unlimited underwater endurance, diesel-electric boats must surface or snorkel every couple of days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries. Those fitted with AIP, however, can stay submerged for around two weeks to significantly boost their stealth and combat capabilities. With Pakistan on course to induct eight Yuan or Hangor-class conventional submarines with AIP from China in a major capability jump, India's depleting conventional underwater combat arm has become a major worry. China, of course, now has the world's largest navy, which includes over 50 diesel-electric and 10 nuclear submarines. Apart from the six French-origin Scorpenes, India has seven very old Russian Kilo-class and four German HDW diesel-electric submarines at present. It also has two operational SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear ballistic missiles) in INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, with the third to be commissioned as INS Aridhaman this year, as reported by TOI earlier. The long-pending projects to build three additional Scorpenes for Rs 38,000 crore and six new-generation diesel-electric submarines, with both AIP and land-attack cruise missiles, for Rs 70,000 crore under Project-75-India at MDL, are also yet to be finalised and inked.

2 NMC officials in Finland to inspect 72M firefighting ladder for high-rises
Nagpur: Considering the population increase and vertical growth in the city, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is scaling up its firefighting infrastructure with a major upgrade — the planned procurement of a 72-metre hydraulic platform ladder to tackle emergencies in high-rise buildings. Also, the number of fire stations is set to increase from the current nine to around 22. Recruitment is also under way to fill long-pending vacancies for firefighters, officers, and rescue personnel. The most critical addition to the city's firefighting capability remains the 72-metre hydraulic ladder, meant to respond effectively to emergencies in skyscrapers. To inspect the equipment before procurement, chief fire officer Tushar Barahate and executive engineer (workshop department) Rajesh Gurumule embarked on a week-long tour to Finland recently. The ladder is manufactured by Finnish firm Bronto Skylift, which was selected after a global tendering process. Italy-based Magirus-Schela was the other contender, but Bronto was chosen based on superior technical and financial evaluations. During the Finland visit, the officials will observe live demonstrations of the ladder's performance under various simulated emergency conditions. The visit aims to assess whether the platform meets NMC's specific operational needs and is suited to Nagpur's urban layout. Meanwhile, the fire department has generated Rs18.25 crore in revenue through the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to buildings and commercial establishments. The department has also conducted fire audits of 202 govt, semi-govt buildings, and hospitals. In response to a query whether the department is equipped to handle fire incidents in skyscrapers, a senior fire official said, "Everything depends on the internal fire protection systems. PGI's Rs 490 cr Advanced Neuroscience Centre nears launch by Sept
Chandigarh: India's healthcare system, currently facing a critical shortage of neurologists—with just one specialist available per million people—is on the brink of a major breakthrough. The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, is preparing to launch its long-awaited Advanced Neuroscience Centre, a Rs 490 crore project that promises to revolutionise neurological and neurosurgical care across the country. Approved in 2017 and with construction beginning in 2020, the centre is now nearing full operationalisation. PGI officials have confirmed that the outpatient department (OPD) is expected to become functional by September, marking a significant milestone in the journey to improve access to specialised brain and spine treatment.
