Sabah boosts padi productivity in six key districts with modern farming
Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Tuaran, Tambunan, Keningau, and Papar will benefit from modern farming techniques and infrastructure upgrades.
Assistant Minister Hendrus Anding revealed that the Sabah Rice and Padi Board has earmarked 121.4 hectares in Tambunan for a high-yield padi pilot project.
'This initiative will feature full automation, mechanisation, and scheduled water management to maximise output,' he said during the State Legislative Assembly session.
The ministry is also executing the Quality Padi Production Scheme, which includes satellite farms for seed production, particularly the TR8 variety.
Three dedicated centres in Papar, Tenom, and Kota Belud will support this effort.
In response to queries from Datuk Rubin Balang, Hendrus shared that abandoned padi fields are being revived.
Last year, 437.57 hectares out of a targeted 7,392 hectares were successfully restored.
Additionally, the Two-Season-a-Year Planting Campaign is being promoted in select areas using Rice Check technology and centralised farming systems.
To further drive agricultural growth, the ministry launched the Sabah State-Level Rural Agricultural Economic Revolution in Tambunan on April 28.
The program aims to boost food security and productivity by encouraging broader community involvement in farming.
Modernisation remains a priority, with ploughing machinery, drones, and IoT solutions being deployed.

Negeri Sembilan sees 0.46m foreign tourists in 2024
SEREMBAN: Negeri Sembilan recorded a significant increase in international tourist arrivals last year, with 0.46 million visitors compared to 0.34 million in 2023, the State Legislative Assembly was told today. According to State Tourism, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Nicole Tan, the 35.1 per cent rise, based on accommodation data from Tourism Malaysia, ranked Negeri Sembilan sixth out of 13 states and three Federal Territories. 'This has made the state one of the tourist hotspots in Malaysia. Most international visitors are from Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Brunei and India,' she said in reply to a question from Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker (PN-Labu) on the number of international tourist arrivals in the state. Tan said that under the Pesona Daerah initiative, Taman Tasik Seremban recorded 109,379 visitors, including 2,901 international tourists, Taman Malaysia received 13,607 visitors, including 342 foreigners, while X-Park Sendayan drew 36,450 visitors, including 8,450 from abroad. 'Port Dickson remains a key tourist destination in the state, with the Ornamental Fish Centre attracting 281,273 visitors, including 4,882 foreign tourists. 'The Army Museum drew 200,061 visitors, including 3,393 international tourists, while PD Ostrich Farm welcomed 43,800 visitors, with 8,984 from abroad, making it one of the district's popular attractions,' she said. Tan said the Jempol district also recorded a positive trend in tourist arrivals, with Bukit Taisho in Bahau attracting 37,500 climbers, including 2,500 foreigners. RM12 billion from agriculture sector: Hajiji

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government remains committed to ensuring the agriculture sector continues to be a key driver of growth and a catalyst for a more dynamic and resilient Sabah economy. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the sector is not only the third-largest contributor to the state's economy but also plays a critical role in safeguarding national food security. 'This sector contributes RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 'Therefore, the State Government is prioritising efforts to further strengthen this sector through more strategic and inclusive approaches,' he said at the closing of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sunday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the closing of HPPNK 2025. Also present were Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, along with federal and state leaders. Among the concrete measures is the re-establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year — after being dissolved in 1981 — to boost the local rice industry and raise the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) of rice to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. 'This is in line with the priorities of the Federal Government led by Anwar who has placed strong emphasis on agriculture, especially rice cultivation,' he said. He emphasised the importance of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart farming to increase production efficiency, boost productivity, and attract younger generations to the sector. He said Sabah currently has 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) that had produced over 1,494 metric tons of food products, generating more than RM4.32 million to date. Hajiji also announced Sabah's first high-impact strategic investment in the Blue Economy sector — development of a European Union-standard tuna and deep-sea seafood landing port in Kota Kinabalu by the State Government in partnership with a local company, with an investment value reaching RM360 million. He said the port is expected to land 50,000 tons of tuna annually, with the potential to generate up to RM1.8 billion in economic value per year, positioning Sabah as one of the major deep-sea players. 394 out of 426 MyKiosk units in Negri Sembilan taken up
SEREMBAN: A total of 394 out of 426 MyKiosk units in Negri Sembilan have been taken up, with each costing between RM15,000 and RM25,000 depending on the specifications, facilities and equipment, the State Legislative Assembly was told today. According to State Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Committee chairman J. Arul Kumar, Seremban had the highest number of units with 130, followed by Kuala Pilah (68), Tampin (58), Jempol (50), Rembau (47), Jelebu (38) and Port Dickson (35). "The remaining MyKiosk units have not been taken up due to unsuitable locations. That is why I have asked the relevant local authorities to relocate them to more appropriate areas so that traders can use them. "However, of the 394 units taken up, there are still some (traders) who have yet to start their businesses. So, we are asking the local authorities to take back those units and give them to those who want to run a business," he said. He said this in response to a question from Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker (PN-Labu) regarding the number of MyKiosk units available in Negri Sembilan and the cost per unit. Responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Saiful Yazan Sulaiman (BN–Johol), who asked whether the state government intended to redesign the MyKiosk units to reflect state or local identity, Arul Kumar said the current design followed national standards. "We may consider the proposal in the future, possibly by incorporating elements of the local identity or making slight changes to reflect our own," he said.
