Brian Chesky reveals what he learned from a brutal early rejection email
In 2008, Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb, had an inbox full of rejections. At the time, he was trying to raise money for his fledgeling start-up, Chesky said in a recent interview on the "The Diary of a CEO" podcast.
"We've had a chance to discuss internally, and unfortunately don't think that it's right for 'fill in the blank investment firm' from an investment perspective," Chesky read during the interview, noting that the email was from August 1, 2008. "The potential market opportunity did not seem large enough for a required model."
Chesky was, to the best of his memory, trying to raise $150,000 at a $1.5 million post-money valuation. Now, nearly 17 years later, Airbnb has a market cap of nearly $80 billion.
"That's a pretty large market," Chesky said. "And our business is pretty much the same idea as the idea that we proposed to that person who said our market opportunity wasn't large enough."
Airbnb has recently implemented some changes, like launching a " services" option for booking things like private chefs and personal trainers, and a new " experiences" feature.
Chesky said that there are many lessons to be found in this early rejection email.
"It's a reminder that the world doesn't just change. Or at least it doesn't just transform towards our dreams, ideals, and ambitions," Chesky said. "That requires certain types of people — we might call them entrepreneurs, inventors, all sorts of people in different domains — that believe the world can be a little different than the one that they live in."
Most people listening to the podcast, he said, have the skills to be an entrepreneur, at least on a small scale.
Chesky said all this as the job market remains dire, including for young people in the tech sector.

MADRID (AP) — Spain 's government wanted to send a message last month with its crackdown on Airbnb: that the Spanish economy and its housing market are not a 'free for all" that value profits over the rule of law, a minister told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The government ordered Airbnb to remove almost 66,000 holiday rentals from the platform which it said had violated local rules by failing to list license numbers, listing the wrong license number or not specifying the apartment's owner. Airbnb is appealing the move. Spain is one of the world's most visited countries. Last year, the Southern European nation of 49 million received a record 94 million international visitors. But a housing affordability problem that is particularly acute in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona has led to growing antagonism against short-term holiday rentals. Airbnb is perhaps the best-known and most visible actor. The Spanish government says the two are related: the rise of Airbnb and other short-term rental companies, and rising rents and housing costs. 'Obviously there is a correlation between these two facts,' Consumer Rights Minister Pablo Bustinduy told the AP. 'It's not a linear relation, it's not the only factor affecting it, there are many others, but it is obviously one of the elements that is contributing.' A recent Bank of Spain report said the country has a shortfall of 450,000 homes. In the tourist hot spots of the Canary and Balearic Islands, half the housing stock is tourist accommodations or properties owned by nonresidents, the report said. 'Tourism is for sure a vital part of the Spanish economy. It's a strategic and very important sector. But as in every other economic activity, it must be conducted in a sustainable way," Bustinduy said. 'It cannot jeopardize the constitutional rights of the Spanish people. Their right to housing, but also their right to well-being.' The country has seen several large protests that have drawn tens of thousands of people to demand more government action on housing. Homemade signs including one that read 'Get Airbnb out of our neighborhoods' at a recent march in Madrid point to the growing anger. 'A balance must be found between the constitutional rights of the Spanish people and economic activities in general," Bustinduy said. Regional governments in Spain are also tackling the issue. Last year, Barcelona announced a plan to close down all of the 10,000 apartments licensed in the city as short-term rentals by 2028 to safeguard the housing supply for full-time residents. Airbnb said that while its appeal goes through the courts, no holiday rentals would be immediately taken down from the site. In response to Spain's order, Airbnb has said the platform connects property owners with renters but it doesn't have oversight obligations, even though it requires hosts to show that they are compliant with local laws. Bustinduy said Spain's recent action reflects a desire in Spain, but also elsewhere, to hold tech companies like Airbnb to account. 'There is a battle going on about accountability and about responsibility,' Bustinduy said. 'The digital nature of these extraordinarily powerful multinational corporations must not be an excuse to fail to comply with democratically established regulations.' Bustinduy, who belongs to the governing coalition's left-wing Sumar party, dismissed the idea that the Spanish government's action toward Airbnb could discourage some tourists from visiting. 'It will encourage longer stays, it will encourage responsible tourism and it will preserve everything that we have in this wonderful country which is the reason why so many people want to come here," he said. The minister also took a shot at low-cost airlines. Spain has pushed against allowing such airlines to charge passengers for hand baggage. Last year, it fined five budget airlines, including RyanAir and easyJet, a total of $179 million for charging for hand luggage. 'The principle behind these actions is always the same: preserving consumer rights,' Bustinduy said. Spain is the most popular international destination for British holidaymakers, with 18 million of us visiting the sunny nation in 2024. However, those who have Airbnb bookings for the coming months may be startled to learn that Spain's authorities have called for the removal of 66,000 short-term holiday listings on the grounds that they are in breach of tourist accommodation regulations. So, what does this mean for already booked Airbnbs in Spain? We'll get to that, but it's useful to know why it's happening… Numerous anti-tourism protests have taken place in Spain since 2024, following a growing housing affordability crisis. Locals in places including Madrid and Barcelona have shone a spotlight on short-term holiday rentals - typically those in residential areas - claiming that the short-term rental market is pushing up housing prices. "No more excuses. Enough with protecting those who make a business out of the right to housing in our country,' Spain's consumer minister Pablo Bustinduy said to journalists following the Spanish court's decision on delisting short-term rentals. Spain's Consumer Rights Ministry opened an investigation into Airbnb last year, and Spanish courts have since deemed many listings to be illegal, claiming thousands of them do not openly show a tourism licence or registration number (at least one that is recognised by the authorities), or they do not show the legal status of the landlords. The High Court of Justice in Madrid has ordered the immediate removal of 5,800 listings, and is promising two further phases totalling up to 66,000 listings. The listings include whole properties only – individual room listings do not feature in the ban. Airbnb claims that even this initial figure has been lowered to 4,984, after they flagged a number of instances where listings were in compliance with the applicable regulations. There will be no impact whatsoever on reservations for the summer in Spain, at least from Airbnb's side. Meaning no cancelled plans and no compensation needed as a result of the recent ruling. The online platform confirmed to Yahoo News that it would be appealing the decision and that it has no plans to take any listings down immediately. "No evidence of rule-breaking by hosts has been put forward,' it said in a statement. 'The decision goes against EU and Spanish law and a previous ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court.' Airbnb could also argue that it is a platform subject to the Digital Services Act, with no monitoring obligations. However, if it is asked to remove content by the Spanish Supreme Court, it would be required to do so. It will likely argue that it's not classified as a real estate provider, so displaying a registration number will lie with the final tourism service provider. The Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) counted more than 350,000 short-term rentals in Spain in 2024, which includes listings on sites Airbnb, Vrbo and Only Airbnb has been targeted in the recent ruling. Airbnb doesn't only offer short-term rentals but also hotels, hostels, rural houses, bed and breakfasts and tourist apartments. There's a growing resentment towards short-term lets worldwide, with many claiming that short-term rentals are affecting house prices. Airbnb policies have become more strict in certain places, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Edinburgh and New York, but Airbnb claims that since the new anti short-term rental regulations in these cities have been in effect there have been no major changes to accommodation availability. 'The solution is to build more homes – anything else is a distraction,' Airbnb said in a statement to Yahoo News. 'Governments across the world are seeing that regulating Airbnb does not alleviate housing concerns or return homes to the market – it only hurts local families who rely on hosting to afford their homes and rising costs.' According to Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) census in 2021, Spain has almost four million vacant homes that make up over 14% of Spain's total housing stock. 'Millions of euros [are] taken from everyday hosts and small businesses, often to the benefit of large hotel chains,' Airbnb claims.
