Gods dwell where women are honoured: Telangana HC CJ
Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Telangana High Court has said that true empowerment of women requires respect at home, the workplace and in society. Speaking at a felicitation organised by the High Court's Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC), he referred to the saying, 'where women are honoured, there the gods dwell.' Justice Paul noted the rise in women judges in Madhya Pradesh and Telangana and called for similar progress elsewhere.
He drew a parallel between preserving nature and valuing women for societal growth. Justice T Madhavi Devi, GSICC chairperson, said the committee promotes gender equality, awareness and fair treatment. Formed in June 2023, it has received two complaints, both resolved. Quoting Vivekananda, she said global welfare needs gender balance, adding that many women remain silent due to stigma.
Justice Juvvadi Sridevi praised GSICC's role in promoting a safe workplace and highlighted digital harassment concerns post-COVID.
Counsel: Decisions predate Srilakshmi's tenure
Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Thursday adjourned hearing on a Criminal Revision Petition filed by IAS officer Y Srilakshmi to July 10. The petition relates to the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) illegal mining case. The SC had remanded the matter to the HC, observing that the earlier order had not fully considered the CBI's submissions.
Srilakshmi, an Andhra Pradesh-cadre officer, is an accused in the case involving alleged illegal mining. A CBI special court earlier dismissed her discharge plea, which was allowed by the High Court.
The CBI challenged this in the Supreme Court, which set aside the High Court order. Senior counsel K Vivek Reddy, appearing for Srilakshmi, argued that the allegations were unfounded, pointing out that her tenure as secretary began in May 2006 and key decisions predate this. He also submitted that 'captive mining' was formalised only in 2015 and that the CBI had not initially named her in the FIR or first chargesheet.
Malla Reddy colleges' plea for additional seats rejected
The Telangana High Court has dismissed appeals filed by the Malla Reddy group of colleges seeking allotment of additional seats. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice J Sree Devi Renuka upheld an earlier decision by Justice K Lakshman rejecting the writ petitions.
Senior counsels S Niranjan Reddy and D Prakash Reddy, appearing for the colleges, argued that the state had selectively granted additional seats to other colleges and denied their clients on alleged political grounds, in violation of Article 14 of the Constitution.
Advocate General A Sudarshan Reddy, representing the state, submitted that seat allotments were made considering local demand, infrastructure and educational needs. He said institutions granted additional seats were in different areas and there was no case for expansion at Malla Reddy colleges. The bench agreed there was no illegality or arbitrariness in the decision-making process and dismissed the appeals.

New Delhi: With Assembly elections just a few months away, the cold-blooded murder of Gopal Khemka, a prominent businessman and owner of Magadh Hospital, has triggered a political firestorm in Bihar. The killing occurred late on Friday night near his residence in the upscale Gandhi Maidan area of Patna, prompting Opposition leaders to slam the law and order situation under the current regime. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav lashed out at the government, alleging media manipulation to mask the deteriorating security environment. According to reports, Khemka was shot dead by unidentified bike-borne assailants around 11:40 P.M. while stepping out of his car near Panache Hotel. Purnia's Independent MP Pappu Yadav, voicing solidarity with the Opposition, called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder. "All of us support the Opposition. As per the instructions of the Congress Party and our incharge, we will raise the issue of attacks on the poor and poverty before the Election Commission on the 9th of this month. Regarding this incident, we demand a CBI probe into the murder of Gopal Khemka," he told IANS. RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari termed the incident as proof of 'criminal rule' in Bihar. He told IANS, "This is a very sad incident. A well-known businessman, Mr. Gopal Khemka, was shot dead in Patna last night near his residence. Now, the criminal rule has been established. After two hours, the police comes. I ask the people who talk about Jungle Raj, dear Prime Minister, please tell me, which raj should this be called? The 'goon rule', the 'criminal rule' has been established in Bihar. "In Bihar, the government has given protection to criminals. The morale of the criminals has increased. The criminals are happy. The police administration is sad." JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar, while acknowledging the gravity of the incident, defended the state administration. "Gopal Khemka was a prominent industrialist and his brutal murder near Gandhi Maidan in Patna is absolutely shocking. Regardless of who the victim is, any murder is a challenge to the rule of law. The DGP of Bihar himself immediately took cognisance of the matter at the highest level and an SIT has been formed under the leadership of City SP Central. The SIT is investigating all aspects of the case." Meanwhile, Gopal Khemka's family has accused the police of gross negligence. His brother, Shankar Khemka, said: 'Officers arrived nearly three hours after the incident, at around 2:30 A.M. Gopal was returning home when the assailants opened fire, just like the way his son was attacked in 2018.'

Madras HC directs govt to pay Rs 6.75 lakh to baby whose thumb severed by nurse
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has directed the state government to pay Rs 6.75 lakh as compensation to a family after a staff nurse of a government hospital in Thanjavur accidentally severed the thumb of a new born post-delivery in 2021. Justice S Srimathy gave the ruling on a petition filed by the baby's father Ganesan. Ganesan stated that his wife delivered a girl child at Government Raja Mirasdar Medical College Hospital in Thanjavur on May 25, 2021. Two weeks later, a staff nurse, Sheela, who was on duty, who tried to remove remove the venflon from the baby's left hand using a pair of scissors, severed her thumb due to negligence. Subsequently, Ganesan filed a mandamus petition before the court seeking fair compensation and the passed an interim order granting compensation of Rs 75,000.

Kharge challenges BJP to amend the Preamble
All India Congress Committee president and member of Parliament (MP) Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday challenged the BJP-led government at the Centre to remove the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the Constitution of India, adding that they won't be able to do so. Kharge challenges BJP to amend the Preamble Addressing the 'Samajika Nyaya Samara Bheri' (Battle for achieving social justice) rally of the Congress leaders and workers at the Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad, Kharge referred to the recent statement of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale demanding removal of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the preamble of the Constitution. The RSS leader's call was endorsed by vice-president Jagdeep Dhankar and BJP leaders, including Union ministers Jitender Singh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. At the Hyderabad rally, which was held with the slogan of 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan,' Kharge said an 'RSS walah' wants a change in the preamble of the Constitution by removing the words secular and socialist. I challenge you, BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and everyone. No one can change or remove these words. It is my challenge. You won't be able to do so,' he challenged. He sought to know why the BJP had included the words 'socialist and secular' in their party's constitution when the RSS was demanding their removal from India's Constitution. He read out Article II of the BJP constitution which said: 'The Party shall bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and to the principles of socialism, secularism and democracy and would uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.' Taking a dig at the NDA government, Kharge said Modiji boasted about visiting 42 countries, but he had not visited Manipur, where rapes and violence were happening every day. 'Why is Modi silent about Manipur? Rahul Gandhi and I had gone there but Modi has not even peeped into Manipur to see what's happening there,' he said. About the Pahalgam terror attack, Kharge said: 'We had stood behind the country and the soldiers of the country when the terror attack happened. But why did Modi leave the war in the middle? He did not make use of the chance he got to square with Pakistan,' he said. Kharge slammed Modi's government for making hollow statements about Pakistan. 'He claimed the government would act against Pakistan. Why didn't he do it? Who stopped you from waging war against Pakistan if you were serious?' he asked. He contrasted Modi with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying she never feared taking bold decisions. 'Indira Gandhi declared she would liberate Bangladesh—and she did it,' Kharge said, emphasizing her courage and decisiveness. Referring to the US President Donald Trump's announcement that he had brokered the peace between India and Pakistan and made them declare ceasefire, Kharge wondered why Modi was silent about Trump's announcement. 'Under Modi regime, India's foreign policy has made enemies out of countries everywhere,' he said. Kharge expressed confidence that just as the Congress came to power in Telangana, it would also form the government at the Centre. He alleged that everything Modi said to the people of the country is a lie. He lauded the hard work of Congress workers in Telangana, saying the party's victory was solely due to their tireless efforts. He praised Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy, deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and other ministers for their efforts in ensuring the party's win. He alleged that KCR and BJP had colluded to block Congress in Telangana, but people defeated both. Kharge said he had already predicted Congress' victory in Telangana. He reminded that more than 50 central institutions were established in Telangana during the Congress regime, and he directly questioned Modi about what the Centre had given to the state in the last 11 years. Addressing the rally, Revanth Reddy said the Congress had proved the sceptics wrong about the survival of the government. 'Many said this government wouldn't last and wouldn't implement welfare schemes—but we proved them wrong by standing tall and making Telangana a model state,' he said. He claimed that his government had completed the caste census and released the OBC population figures. 'Despite a struggling economy, we are moving forward by implementing welfare schemes. In just 18 months, we provided Rythu Bharosa, bonus for fine rice farmers, subsidised rice for the poor, and waived farmers' loans. The previous government discouraged paddy cultivation; we promised bonuses for fine rice, and we delivered. Today, Telangana stands as India's No. 1 in paddy production,' he said. The chief minister also claimed that in just 18 months, his government attracted ₹3 lakh crore in investments to Telangana. 'We've initiated plans to set up Young India Integrated Residential Schools in 100 constituencies with ₹20,000 crore. We've established the Young India Skills University to equip youth with job skills. We're setting up Young India Sports University with the aim of winning Olympic gold by 2030,' he claimed. Stating that the Congress workers are our brand ambassadors, he asked them to declare war on the social media campaign unleashed by the BRS. 'We must defeat the Kalvakuntla family in this battle,' he said. Criticising the Congress rally, Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao said the rally was aimed at damaging the concept of social justice. He alleged that Telangana has turned into a 'bottomless pit' for Congress' looting. 'The Congress is all noise on guarantees and promises, but implementation is zero. The Revanth Reddy government is discriminating against OBCs and mocking SC/STs through 'Bheem' dramas,' he said. Rao also alleged that it was the Congress which killed democracy during the Emergency and now is undermining justice and constitutional values by distorting slogans like 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan.'
