Trupti canteens will help women financially, says MAUD Principal Secretary
Inaugurating the city's first Trupti canteen at Panja Centre in Vijayawada on Saturday, Mr. Suresh Kumar said the government has come up with the idea of Trupti canteens to encourage women part of the Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas(DWCRA) to become entrepreneurs.
Mr. Suresh Kumar said the government plans to set up 750 canteens, under the auspices of Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), across the State. The first in the State, which came up in Nellore, is running successfully, he said, adding that women are getting an income of ₹10,000-15,000 a day.
He said Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has given them a target of training 30,000 women as entrepreneurs, and it is as part of the target that they have asked women to manage the canteens.
Mr. Suresh Kumar said the main purpose of these canteens is to provide food at low prices and also to provide employment to women. There are 28 lakh DWCRA women's groups in the State, and such initiatives will help them financially, the officer said. Every canteen will be managed by four women, and they would be provided training.
Such canteens will be set up at important junctions and places along highways, Mr. Suresh Kumar said.
MEPMA project director N. Tej Bharat said the canteens were launched in line with the Chief Minister's action plan to have one entrepreneur in every family. He added that they are working towards training 30,000 women as entrepreneurs.
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M. said there are 11 Anna canteens at present. In addition to the Trupti canteen at Panja Centre, two more canteens are coming up, he added.

The implementation of the smart street vending markets will involve coordinated support from multiple stakeholders. ULBs will provide land, infrastructure, solar panels, and maintenance support, with financial contributions ranging from Rs 1.25 crore to Rs 3 crore. They will also be responsible for tendering construction work and identifying expert agencies for vendor training and capacity building. Banks will facilitate the beneficiary contribution through loans under the self-employment programme, amounting to Rs 75 lakh to Rs 3 crore. MEPMA will support vendor training, provide market access, and offer mentorship through designated agencies or consultants, with financial support ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, sourced from the National Urban Livelihoods Mission's (NULM) "support to urban street vendors" component. In terms of market linkages, efforts will be made to establish connections with local and regional businesses and forge partnerships with e-commerce platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato to expand vendors' reach. AP clears 1,941-acre land pooling in Vizag region to boost ‘Bay City' expansion
VISAKHAPATNAM: In a significant move to support planned urban expansion, the State government has approved a large-scale land pooling initiative across Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Anakapalli districts. As per Government Order (GO) MS No. 146 dated July 30, 2025, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department has authorised the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) to implement a Land Pooling Scheme (LPS) covering 1,941.19 acres. The initiative aligns with the NITI Aayog's Growth Hub (G-Hub) strategy, which aims to position Visakhapatnam as the 'Bay City' or 'Miami of the East. Under the broader Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER) plan, covering nine districts, the regional economy is projected to grow from $54 billion to $135 billion by 2032. Two key urban extensions — Vizag 2.0 (210 sq. km) and Vizag Bay City (40 sq. km) — will be developed as brownfield projects to accommodate future urban and economic growth in a structured and sustainable manner. To support these developments, the government is investing heavily in integrated infrastructure, including the Vizag Metro Rail project. Phases 1 and 2 of the metro, spanning 77 kilometres, are scheduled for completion between 2028 and 2030. This project will connect the IT corridors and Bhogapuram International Airport. The total investment in metro rail, roads, and urban infrastructure is estimated between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000 crore.

Smart street vending markets in seven cities soon: Andhra government
VIJAYAWADA: In a bid to promote organised street vending and support self-employment, the State government has approved the establishment of 'Smart Street Vending Markets' in seven major urban local bodies (ULBs). The initiative aims to empower women from self-help groups (SHGs) and registered street vendors. As per issued by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department on Wednesday, the markets will be developed under the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA). The chosen ULBs include Anantapur, Kurnool, Tadepalli-Mangalagiri, Ongole, Srikakulam, Vijayawada, and YSR Kadapa. The decision follows the successful pilot project on Mypadu Road in Nellore, where 200 modular shops were set up under the DAY-NULM scheme. Encouraged by its outcome, the government has expanded the project to more cities. Depending on space, each market will feature between 40 and 200 shops. These zones will offer rooftop seating, solar-powered facilities, advertising spaces, free Wi-Fi, digital payment support, and improved security. Priority will be given to women vendors, people from marginalised communities, and persons with disabilities. The project is estimated to cost Rs 26.10 crore, funded jointly by ULBs, banks (through SEP loans), and MEPMA. Beneficiaries will be selected through a survey and allocated shops via lottery, with vetting by the respective Town Vending Committees. Training in food safety, marketing, hygiene, and entrepreneurship will be provided in line with FSSAI norms. Municipal Commissioners will oversee implementation, with all markets expected to be operational by March 2026. The government plans to link vendors with platforms like Swiggy and Zomato to enhance market reach. Officials said the initiative will improve livelihoods, generate municipal revenues, and promote clean vending.
