Bundesliga set for longer games as Germany embraces more added time in soccer
Germany's top men's league is the latest to follow a trend set by the 2022 World Cup and the English Premier League by measuring the exact time taken up by events like red cards, penalties and injuries, and adding that amount on at the end of each half.
'We currently have just under 60 minutes of net playing time (with the ball in play), which will probably increase somewhat,' said Knut Kircher, the German refereeing body's managing director of sports and communication, in comments reported Tuesday by German agency dpa.
The new Bundesliga season starts Aug. 22 but the changes have already taken effect in the men's second and third tiers. There's been a backlash against some decisions.

The Bears beat the Bills 38-0 and Johnson said that was all about the players' execution. "It really had nothing to do with scheme. It was all about our guys and how they wanted to play the game," Johnson said. Now Johnson will hope that promising performance can carry over to the regular season.

Valerien Ismael is hoping for a breakthrough in the transfer market this week but admitted Blackburn Rovers are closer to adding to their squad. Rovers want to sign a right-winger, which is likely to be their last piece of business unless there are outgoings. The head coach has been honest that the external noise created by the transfer window has caused complications with their preparation. He is hopeful that a victory will help mitigate some of those external factors, as well as the window closing. "The League Cup game, I won't count that as a game. But it's clear when you're losing in the league, then you add the Cup game and say, look, it doesn't look good," he admitted. "It's the beginning of the season. The game I saw today, we competed in the second half against West Brom, was really good. So actually, we see that we're improving, despite a lot of hectic around the club and the training ground. "Yes we are facing some difficult situations. We take the challenge. At some point, the calm will come back and we can work properly without any disruption. "So the first thing is it will stop as soon as the transfer window is closed. At least you can see we can work properly. "As long as the transfer window is open, it will be stressful. At the same time, you play a game and you need to win a game to calm down, to have more calm. So this is what we have to do now."
