New Delhi: On the 40th anniversary of the Kanishka bombing, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar paid homage to those who lost their lives in the attack and described it "as one of the worst acts of terrorism."
He emphasised that the anniversary of the attack is a "stark reminder of why the world must show zero tolerance towards terrorism and violent extremism."
In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, "On the 40th anniversary of Air India 182 'Kanishka' bombing, we honour the memory of the 329 lives lost in one of the worst acts of terrorism. A stark reminder of why the world must show zero tolerance towards terrorism and violent extremism."
Meanwhile, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, Irish Prime Minister, Micheal Martin, and Canadian Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, laid a wreath at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork in Ireland, to pay homage to the victims of the Kanishka bombing.
On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was blown up by the Canada-based Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa near Cork, resulting in the deaths of all 329 passengers on board.
An Indian delegation arrived in Ireland to attend the 40th anniversary of the memorial of the Kanishka terror attack. The delegation led by Hardeep Singh Puri includes BJP MLA in Delhi Assembly, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Minister of State in the Uttar Pradesh government, Baldev Singh Aulakh, BJP MLA from Sadulshahar in Ganganagar, Rajasthan Assembly, Gurveer Singh Brar, BJP MLA from RS Pura in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Narinder Singh Raina, BJP MLA from Kashipur in the Uttarakhand Assembly, Trilok Singh Cheema- BJP MLA from Kashipur in Uttarakhand Assembly, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh and India's Ambassador to Ireland, Akhilesh Mishra.
During the event, Mayor of the County of Cork, Councillor Joe Carroll, laid a wreath at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork. People in large numbers were present at the event to pay tribute to the victims of the Kanishka bombing. School students paid musical tribute to victims at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork.
Speaking at the event, Micheal Martin said, "Very honoured to be here in Ahakista this morning on this 40th anniversary of that terrible day in 1985 that saw the Air India flight cruelly and horrifically brought down off our coastline. It's always a privilege and honour to attend this sober commemoration and to witness the dignity, dedication and care with which you remember your loved ones who died so horrifically 40 years ago today."
He noted that the passing of time since the bombing in 1985 does not dim the scale of the loss and atrocity. He stated that they feel the enormity of the loss when they see the faces and read the stories on the memorial in Ahakista.
He stated, "329 innocent people lost their lives over the skies of Ireland that morning, and the passing of time does not dim the scale of loss and this atrocity. We feel the enormity of your loss when we see the faces and read the stories on the memorial here, before us. Especially moving are these simple descriptions: student, child, so many young lives taken far too soon. While the scale of this horrific act is of global significance, we should never forget that it is an intensely personal tragedy. The loss and grief felt by you, the families and loved ones of the people who died that June morning in 1985 is deeply personal. One only needs to come here on any year and listen to you speak, witness you placing flowers into the sea or laying wreaths to understand how powerful that grief endures."

Govt fiscal deficit may widen by 0.2% due to GST changes, but growth gains outweigh slippage: Report

New Delhi: The government's fiscal deficit could see a short-term increase due to proposed changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, but the growth boost is expected to outweigh the temporary slippage, according to a report by Emkay Research. The report highlighted that the fiscal deficit could widen by 0.1 per cent in FY26E to 4.5 per cent and by 0.2 per cent in FY27E to 4.6 per cent. However, this widening is seen as a transient factor that would normalize within two to three years. "The government should absorb the revenue loss through the higher deficit, as the growth accretion will cover the shortfall within 2-3 years," the report noted. This shortfall, the report said, will be partially made up by tax buoyancy and asset sales. The report added that the government has the numbers to push the GST changes through, but it will need to convince states, as the revenue loss could push some states beyond the 3 per cent to 3.5 per cent deficit ceiling. The GST rationalization must be cleared by the GST Council, where the central government has a 33 per cent vote, and the remaining 67 per cent is equally split among 31 states and union territories. All decisions require a 75 per cent weighted average majority, which means support from at least 20 of the 31 states is needed. The report also highlighted that India's complex GST structure is a "millstone around the growth neck," and rationalization is worth the risk. Strong macro-financial stability, reflected in the recent ratings upgrade, provides a favorable environment to carry out these reforms. Still, the research firm cautioned that GST Council approval is necessary and rates on individual categories could change in the final announcement. Assuming no changes in expenditure, the Centre's FY26 net fiscal slippage is estimated at around 0.2 per cent of GDP, with lower tax revenues being offset by higher dividends and PSU divestment. On the positive side, the report mentioned that the consumer inflation could ease by around 50-60 basis points over the next year. However, the overall impact on aggregate demand will depend on the government's fiscal stance. Any reduction in capital expenditure or social sector and rural schemes could limit the demand boost. The report concluded that the policy intent to shift to a two-tier GST structure is a welcome move, as indirect taxes are regressive in nature. While the reforms may cause short-term fiscal pressure, they are expected to support growth and simplify the tax structure in the long run.

India's EAM Jaishankar to visit Russia, meet FM Lavrov and co-chair IRIGC-TEC 26th Session: MEA

New Delhi: Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will embark on a visit to Russia from Tuesday to Thursday, as per an official statement by the Ministry of External Affairs. During his visit, he will meet Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and also co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. In an official statement, the MEA said that the visit of the External Affairs Minister comes at the invitation of First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov, the External Affairs Minister. "Dr. S. Jaishankar, will undertake an official visit to Russia on 19-21 August 2025 to co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) scheduled for 20 August 2025." The EAM will also address the India-Russia Business Forum meeting in Moscow. As per the statement, during his visit, EAM will also meet the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and review the bilateral agenda and share perspective on regional and global issues. The statement highlighted that the visit aims to further strengthen the longstanding and time-tested India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. The development comes amid strain in India's ties with the US over New Delhi's procurement of crude oil from Russia. Ties between Washington and New Delhi faced fresh strain on the trade front. Government sources confirmed that the US team would not travel to India for the sixth round of bilateral trade negotiations scheduled for August 25. The setback comes just days after Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total levy to 50 per cent, along with an unspecified penalty for India's continued oil imports from Russia. Earlier on August 13, the Foreign Ministry of Russia had said that EAM Jaishankar and Russian FM Sergey Lavrov's meeting would discuss key issues on the bilateral agenda, as well as key aspects of cooperation within international frameworks. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared his insights about the recent meeting in Alaska with US President Donald Trump over the Ukraine conflict. PM Modi said India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. He thanked the Russian President for the phone call and for sharing his perspective on the Alaska meeting.

China assures India to address needs of fertilisers, rare earths, tunnel boring machines: Sources

New Delhi: As per sources, China has promised to address India's three concerns, namely rare earths, fertilisers and tunnel boring machines. According to sources, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar that China is addressing the three key concerns of India's needs of fertilisers, rare earths and tunnel boring machines. The Chinese Foreign Minister arrived in India on Monday for a two-day visit. Earlier on Monday, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said in his opening remarks that the talks would cover "economic and trade issues, pilgrimages, people-to-people contacts, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity and bilateral exchanges". EAM followed up on concerns he had brought up during his visit to China in July earlier this year. During his opening remarks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, EAM had underscored that as neighbouring nations and major economies in the world, there are various facets and dimensions of the India-China ties. "It is also essential in this context that restrictive trade measures and roadblocks are avoided", he said. Jaishankar had further noted, "Stable and constructive ties between India and China are not only to our benefit, but that of the world as well. This is best done by handling relations on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity". During his remarks with the Chinese Foreign Minister in New Delhi on Monday, the EAM had noted that differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict. He added that the visit of the Chinese leader to India provides the two countries with an opportunity to review the bilateral ties, and it is also an appropriate time to exchange views on the global situation and some issues of mutual interest. The ties between India and China had plunged after the actions of the Chinese military along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh that led to a standoff. The standoff began in April-May 2020, and there was some easing of tensions due to agreements on the disengagement of troops from some friction points. Ahead of the 2024 BRICS Summit, India and China reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, marking progress in easing tensions. The two countries have in recent months taken steps to improve their ties. India has stressed the need of taking steps towards de-escalation along LAC in eastern Ladakh. With a flux in geo-political situation amid efforts to find a solution to the Ukraine war and tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, Jaishankar said there is an imperative to enhance stability in the global economy as well. Wang Yi's visit comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected visit to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September.
