Encyclopaedic Sanskrit dictionary portal provides free access to ancient knowledge
The KoshaSHRI Portal is a collaborative effort between Deccan College and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune and represents one of the world's largest Sanskrit lexicography projects. It builds on the project 'An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Sanskrit on Historical Principles' started in 1976 and has published 35 volumes. The academic resource is accessible for free at https://koshashri-dc.ac.in. The portal includes search functionality by subject, author, grammar, and period, and provides access to 15 lakh digitised vocables and over one crore reference slips collected, documented and stored at Deccan College. Sanskrit font Koshashri enhances the portal's usability by supporting Vedic symbols, Roman diacritics, and English characters.
The IKS-EDS Centre will train researchers in lexicography and promote academic partnerships with institutions working in the field of Indian Knowledge Systems. The Centre has been provided with 21 new positions, including 20 academic and one administrative post.
The Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Sanskrit on Historical Principles was first conceptualised by Professor SM Katre in 1948.

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government isset to launch 'Naipunyam', a new skill development portal, on September 1. Announcing this at the Green Energy Conference here on Wednesday, Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh emphasised that the portal would be a key tool for connecting the state's youth with relevant job opportunities, particularly in emerging sectors like green energy. Each cluster will focus on a specific sector like Anantapur (automobile manufacturing); Kurnool (renewable energy); Kadapa and Chittoor (electronics manufacturing; Nellore (specialised manufacturing, including air conditioning); Prakasam (compressed bio-gas (CBG): Guntur and Krishna ('Quantum Valley' hubs); and north Andhra (pharma, IT, data centers, and medical device manufacturing). Lokesh highlighted the positive impact of such initiatives on rural communities, citing the example of a woman in Anantapur who became financially independent after securing a job at a Kia Motors ancillary unit. "We want to replicate that impact across the state, especially for women and rural youth," he said. He also mentioned that Suzlon had already established two skill training centers in the state.

What happened on the Antarctica evacuation mission? 'The crew can only attempt the flight after detailed analysis of the weather and airfield state. The United States Antarctic Program Winter Team must physically create the runway before we can depart by ensuring the ice is groomed and suitable for landing,' he said. 'Although they determine it is safe, it's still an extremely challenging environment to fly in on Night Vision Goggles due to the extreme weather conditions, which are highly changeable at this time of year and makes accurate forecasting a challenge.' "This, coupled with there being no airfields available to divert to once the aircraft is past a certain point south adds to the risk, so these missions are not taken lightly,' he added. The McMurdo Station, a key hub supporting around 200 winter staff, relies on international support for emergencies during the Antarctic winter, when isolation and harsh conditions limit medical resources. The RNZAF's 19.5-hour mission, executed with a C-130J Hercules equipped with a doctor, successfully transported the trio to Christchurch, New Zealand. US Chargé d'Affaires Melissa Sweeney praised the effort as 'flawless'. 'We are so very grateful. Our Kiwi partners didn't hesitate to undertake this mission in one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth. Their skill and readiness are truly world-class,' she said.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami explained the profound greatness of Sanatan Dharma, stating that human life is fundamentally rooted in Dharma. He highlighted Sanskrit as the foundational language of Dharma and a vital part of India's vast and ancient knowledge systems. Dhami noted that the Government of India was making significant efforts to reestablish India as a 'Vishwa Guru', a global spiritual and intellectual leader. Governor Haribabu echoed these sentiments, describing Sanskrit as a living legacy that continues to guide humanity. He underlined the scientific knowledge embedded in Sanskrit texts, referencing examples such as the construction of Ram Setu, Brahmastra, and Pashupatastra as evidence of its advanced intellectual and scientific depth. He further pointed out that Paninian grammar is highly relevant to modern computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. The Governor also mentioned the wealth of knowledge in Sanskrit texts related to architecture and Vastu Shastra, urging everyone to study the language deeply and embrace its wisdom. Vice-Chancellor Prof GSR Krishna Murthy detailed the university's initiatives in promoting Sanskrit and shared updates on ongoing academic and cultural activities. Mahamahopadhyaya Sadhu Bhadreshdas Swami, President of Akshara Purushottam Dham, New Delhi, also addressed the gathering, offering spiritual insights and extending blessings on the occasion.
