Kyiv's EU accession bid moving faster than any in history, Ukraine's PM says
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has announced that, thanks to the legal efforts of the government and parliament, Ukraine is progressing towards European Union membership at the fastest pace ever recorded among candidate countries.

Details: Shmyhal was answering a question from an MP about the legal compatibility of the posts of minister of justice and deputy prime minister.
"There is a large layer of legal work in the area of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. This decision [to combine the positions – ed.] is 100% justified. We, supported by the parliament, are moving forward with all the necessary bills; then the government is implementing all the necessary regulations. We are doing a lot of legal work with the European Commission," he said.
"We've got a fairly high pace in all of this. We have great ambitions to become an EU member as soon as possible. And our pace is the fastest of all the candidate countries that have ever aspired to become an EU member. Therefore, such an integration [of those posts] is justified," the prime minister said.
Shmyhal added that merging the positions of deputy prime minister and justice minister serves as a political demonstration of Ukraine's priorities. However, he clarified that this decision is consistent with current legislation, the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Law on the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

In February, Hungary blocked the opening of the first negotiation cluster with Ukraine and promised to block the opening of clusters until it holds "consultations" with the population on Ukraine's accession.
On 5 March, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced a poll on support for Ukraine's EU membership.
Meanwhile, the Hungarian government insists that Ukraine's accession to the EU would be dangerous for Hungary, including from an agricultural and economic point of view.

German defence minister visits Ukraine for talks on weapons support
BERLIN (Reuters) -German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has arrived in Kyiv to discuss military support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, the DPA news agency reported on Thursday. Pistorius plans to hold talks with Ukrainian government representatives about further weapons aid from Berlin, according to the report. "We are doing everything we can to support Ukraine so that it can defend itself and get into a position where Russia is prepared to enter into serious negotiations," Pistorius said ahead of his departure. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has already travelled to Kyiv and hosted President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Berlin since taking office in May, recently gave Ukraine the green light for "long range fire" with weapons supplied by Germany and others, angering Moscow.

Partisan group destroys Russian military truck in occupied Ukraine, allegedly killing soldiers, Atesh claims
A Russian Ural military truck was destroyed, allegedly killing "several occupiers" near occupied Melitopol overnight on June 12, the pro-Ukrainian Atesh partisan group claimed. "(O)ur fighters set fire to an army Ural truck, and several occupiers on duty now remain in the fields of Zaporizhzhia forever," the Atesh group said in a post to Telegram. On June 10, the Atesh partisan group claimed they destroyed a vehicle used by drone operators in the Russian 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade in occupied Melitopol. The group says the June 12 attack will mark the start of Russia's annual national holiday. "A gift for Russia Day: Atesh agents carried out sabotage in the Melitopol region... Atesh agents conveyed 'congratulations' to the occupiers: one of our fighters set fire to an army Ural truck," the group said. The Kyiv Independent could not verify the group's claims. The Atesh partisan group regularly conducts sabotage attacks in Russia and Ukraine's Russian-occupied territories. Wars now displace over 122 million people as aid funding falls, UN says
By Emma Farge GENEVA (Reuters) -The number of people displaced by war and persecution around the world climbed above 122 million this year due to a failure to resolve multi-year conflicts such as those in Sudan and Ukraine, the U.N. refugee agency said on Thursday, noting that funding to help the refugees has fallen to 2015 levels. There were over 2 million more people displaced globally by the end of April 2025 than there were the previous year despite the return of nearly the same number of Syrians after the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's rule, according to the report by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi. The report attributed the rise to major conflicts in Sudan, Myanmar and Ukraine and a "continued failure to stop the fighting". "We are living in a time of intense volatility in international relations, with modern warfare creating a fragile, harrowing landscape marked by acute human suffering," Grandi said in a statement alongside the report. The surge in displacement numbers comes as funding to help them has fallen to 2015 levels when the total number of refugees around the world stood at about half current levels, UNHCR said. It described the cuts in aid as "brutal and ongoing" and said the situation was untenable, leaving refugees and others vulnerable. Humanitarians complain that a lack of political leadership in brokering peace deals is prolonging conflicts and stretching aid groups tasked with addressing their impacts. The agency, whose largest donor has historically been the U.S., has previously said that the cuts put millions of lives at risk and left women refugees at a greater risk of rape and children at risk of trafficking. UNHCR has not given details on which donors have reduced their funding. U.S. President Donald Trump has cut most foreign aid while Britain and European neighbours are spending less on aid and more on defence.
