Springboks to cut squad as plans change

Over the first three Tests of the year – and the warm-up game against the Barbarians – Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has mixed and matched with selections, while using around 45 players.
In fact, in the three matches since the opener against the invitational team in Cape Town, the Springbok coaches made 10, 15 and 16 personnel changes in successive weeks.
Last week, some players who weren't used against Georgia were already given some time 'off', and there will be a bit of a break for most players before the Springboks begin preparations for their Rugby Championship opener on 16 August at Ellis Park when they meet Australia.
This week, though, Rassie Erasmus is set to confirmed a more settled 36-man squad.
'We'll name 36 guys on Tuesday for the Australia series and within that squad there'll be one or two guys that we experiment with, but the bulk of that squad will be experienced players who are suited to the way we want to play,' he said.
'The nice thing is that we've got a group of 48 players or so that we've used this year and there's quite a couple that we'd also like to give opportunities to like Jaden (Hendrikse), Jordan (Hendrikse), Quan Horn, Renzo (du Plessis).
'But this was a series where we wanted to experiment a little bit so getting the scorelines we did is pretty satisfying. But the Rugby Championship is definitely a step up.'
The Springboks now have a three-week break before the opening Test in the Rugby Championship, with Erasmus indicating selection would be more consistent.
'We're fairly happy if you look over the four games (to start the season),' said Erasmus.
'We scored close to 50 points in each match and apart from the first Italy test defended pretty well.
'Georgia were physical and disruptive but that's not an excuse for us making so many errors, but I guess we must understand that if we chop and change teams like we have as we're building squad depth, you'll lose rhythm.
'We found that again in the last 20 minutes and we can be fairly happy with the scoreline although one can always do better.'

Kaizer Chiefs news: Nabi confident despite strikers uncertain future

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi is entering the new season determined to reverse recent struggles. After missing out on MTN8 qualification twice, the pressure is on to perform better early. 'We must hit the ground running,' Nabi said. 'The team is building momentum.' Striker Etiosa Ighodaro remains a key target but is yet to finalize his move from Mamelodi Sundowns. Chiefs insiders say negotiations have slowed, with Sundowns not keen to release him without a fee. Ighodaro has other offers, including from overseas clubs, making the transfer a waiting game. Despite transfer frustrations, Nabi has been impressed with new signings Ethan Chislett and Flavio Silva. 'Their work ethic and skill bring energy to the squad,' Nabi remarked. Pre-season games in the Netherlands gave the team valuable experience, highlighting growing team cohesion. Former Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela highlighted issues at left-back, noting that Nkhanyiso Shinga's defensive positioning needs improvement. 'Defensive stability starts at the back. Shinga has potential but needs to be more consistent,' Masilela said. Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Kaizer Chiefs set to complete more signings after Europe tour

Kaizer Chiefs have landed back in South Africa after an intense two-week pre-season training camp in the Netherlands, where the team played a series of friendly matches to fine-tune their preparations for the 2025/2026 season. A source revealed that both the technical staff and club management feel pleased with how the squad performed and behaved throughout their European tour. The source couldn't hide their enthusiasm about the club's progress during the camp. 'We had a very exciting pre-season, I must say. It was a great space for the team to be in so that coaches can strategise and players blend in and connect. The type of teams we played was great competition. It was very important that we expose our team, and we are excited about the work that was done with a great opportunity for the new guys to integrate. It was also good for our youth to come in and show their hunger. So, it was successful in terms of the playing style and for the technical team to get some work done,' the source stated. That glowing review highlights the positive energy within the camp and the team's desire to improve on last season's underwhelming performance. Chiefs' European tour focused on tactical refinement and building squad cohesion. The technical team used the trip to test various combinations, help new arrivals settle in, and give promising youngsters a chance to shine. The source noted that the quality of opposition during friendlies added great value. Which helped the squad raise their game and adopt the desired playing style under new leadership. While Kaizer Chiefs have already brought in new faces. The recruitment door remains open. The source hinted that the club still seeks to strengthen their attacking options before the season kicks off. Who will Kaizer Chiefs sign for their attack? Kaizer Chiefs eye powerful Central African striker in transfer move

Kaizer Chiefs have turned their attention to Central Africa in their ongoing quest to bolster their strike force ahead of the 2025/2026 season, with Cameroonian hitman Ravel Djoumekou now under serious consideration. Amakhosi continue to chase firepower up front, and a reliable source close to the club has revealed that Djoumekou, a 25-year-old striker currently leading the line for FC Saint Eloi Lupopo in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been formally offered to the club. 'He is an experienced striker who could really help Chiefs at this stage,' the source confirmed. 'He has been offered to Chiefs in their quest to sign a striker and now it's up to Chiefs' scouts and analysts to assess him and make a decision after that. But if they make their decision to sign him, then he would be available.' The club's recruitment team has already received Djoumekou's profile and is reportedly reviewing his performances. The Cameroonian has impressed in DR Congo with his strength, positioning, and eye for goal, traits that could offer Chiefs the clinical edge they've lacked in recent seasons. While Chiefs have already landed several new faces during this window. Insiders insist the club's transfer activity remains far from over. The technical team continues to assess various players. As they look to build a squad capable of challenging for silverware in the upcoming campaign. Kaizer Chiefs are clearly not content with half-measures. With the new season approaching fast, fans can expect more movement. And potentially a new frontman to lead the charge. Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
