Springboks to cut squad as plans change

Over the first three Tests of the year – and the warm-up game against the Barbarians – Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has mixed and matched with selections, while using around 45 players.
In fact, in the three matches since the opener against the invitational team in Cape Town, the Springbok coaches made 10, 15 and 16 personnel changes in successive weeks.
Last week, some players who weren't used against Georgia were already given some time 'off', and there will be a bit of a break for most players before the Springboks begin preparations for their Rugby Championship opener on 16 August at Ellis Park when they meet Australia.
This week, though, Rassie Erasmus is set to confirmed a more settled 36-man squad.
'We'll name 36 guys on Tuesday for the Australia series and within that squad there'll be one or two guys that we experiment with, but the bulk of that squad will be experienced players who are suited to the way we want to play,' he said.
'The nice thing is that we've got a group of 48 players or so that we've used this year and there's quite a couple that we'd also like to give opportunities to like Jaden (Hendrikse), Jordan (Hendrikse), Quan Horn, Renzo (du Plessis).
'But this was a series where we wanted to experiment a little bit so getting the scorelines we did is pretty satisfying. But the Rugby Championship is definitely a step up.'
The Springboks now have a three-week break before the opening Test in the Rugby Championship, with Erasmus indicating selection would be more consistent.
'We're fairly happy if you look over the four games (to start the season),' said Erasmus.
'We scored close to 50 points in each match and apart from the first Italy test defended pretty well.
'Georgia were physical and disruptive but that's not an excuse for us making so many errors, but I guess we must understand that if we chop and change teams like we have as we're building squad depth, you'll lose rhythm.
'We found that again in the last 20 minutes and we can be fairly happy with the scoreline although one can always do better.'

Striker: Exit the master jockey

Peerless Piere Strydom has finally called it a day. Trainer and old friend Sean Tarry sums it up well: 'If you want to learn how to ride racehorses, just watch Piere Strydom.' Racing fans in Gqeberha nicknamed Strydom 'Striker' early in his career – when he was starting out as a jockey in his hometown in the 1980s – because of his uncommon ability to precisely judge the pace of a race and fly up from behind to win by a whisker. His father Hekkie, a former jockey and trainer in the Windy City, lectured him from an early age about a race not being won at the 200m pole but rather at the winning post. The truth is young Strydom won a lot of races by leading all the way, utilising a coastal tailwind to get away – and stay away – from rivals. Indeed, in those days frontrunning victories were a lot rarer than they are now and Strydom was influential in major tactical changes in the game – even after he moved to Joburg in 1889/90 and took mainstream racing by storm. Spectacular career For anyone who missed it, 59-year-old Strydom announced his retirement from riding this week. He has not renewed his licence for the 2026 season and will ride his last race at the Vaal next week. The stats: six national jockey championships, four Durban Julys, seven wins on a card twice and 'five thousand, six hundred and, um, nearly twenty' career wins. The legend: one of the top two South African jockeys of all time, along with Muis Roberts. The pinnacle: beating the best jockeys and speed horses in the world aboard South Africa's J J The Jet Plane at Sha Tin in the Hong Kong Sprint in 2010. Picture: Steve Haag/Gallo Images Time to call it quits Speaking on a podcast hosted by his new employer Joao da Mata of Glistian Events, Striker said the time had come to finally hang up his saddle – after threatening to do so for a decade. 'It just came to the point where I didn't feel like getting on a horse,' he said. 'It's always nice to ride these winners, it still gives you a thrill … and knowing that you're doing the job right and to see other people happy. I've always been a competitive person, but how do I compete when I don't want to ride? 'I still do the job I need to do, but when you start thinking about the possibility of getting injured again and stuff like that you know it is time to call it.' He added that the cost of his insurance policies had also grown unsustainable. Looking ahead Strydom will keep busy in a hospitality role for Glistian – mixing with clients/guests at race days, golf days and other fun events. Racing scribes like me have written many thousands of words in praise of Piere Strydom over the decades. Racehorse owners like me have seen him win on our nags when the task looked impossible. Acquaintances such as I have always been touched by the friendliness, warmth and honesty of the man. There's not much more to say. Go well, Striker!

Franchises confirm 30 players for fourth season of SA20 league

The remaining 84 slots in the respective squads will be confirmed at the player auction in Johannesburg on 9 September. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been announced as a wildcard pick by defending champions MI Cape Town for next season's SA20 league. Picture: Sydney Seshibedi/Gallo Images A total of 24 players have either been retained or pre-signed contracts with SA20 teams, while all six wildcard players have also been announced, ahead of next season's fourth edition of the popular T20 league. Each of the six franchises were permitted a maximum of six retained or pre-signed players, comprising a maximum of three South African and three overseas players, during the player retention window which closed last week. In addition, each franchise was allowed a wildcard pick, which could be any player who was part of the team's squad in season three. The list of 30 players, which were released on Wednesday, included 17 foreigners and 13 South Africans. Upcoming auction The remaining 84 slots in the respective squads were set to be confirmed at the player auction in Johannesburg on 9 September, where the franchises had a collective maximum purse of R131 million they could still spend on compiling their squads. Notable South African players available to be picked up at the auction include Proteas World Test Championship final heroes Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj, along with top young talent Dewald Brevis and Kwena Maphaka. T20 specialists Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi are also available. 'When the league first drafted its regulations in season one, we always saw this forthcoming season as an opportunity for a strategic reset, and this is exactly where we envisioned being,' said SA20 league commissioner Graeme Smith. 'There's now a strong balance between pre-signed and retained international and Proteas players, alongside a significant purse available for the auction. 'After three seasons, the franchises have developed a good understanding of the South Africa cricket ecosystem and adopted a distinct strategy which sets the stage for the most exciting auction yet.' The 2025/26 SA20 league will be held between 26 December and 26 January, shortly ahead of the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka in February.
