The border spot could be getting a 'hobbit house' - but two previous attempts to build a partially underground property at the site were withdrawn following objections from neighbours

Plans have submitted for a three bedroom underground hobbit house on the border of Wales by a couple inspired by Lord of the Rings. Alan Heeks, from Hay-on-Wye, has submitted plans for the unusual home in grounds adjacent to Dulas House near the Powys-Herefordshire border in Cusop.
Planning documents submitted to Herefordshire council show Mr Heeks has applied build the unique dwelling where the only visible part will be the entrance to the property named Deephallow. Alongside the plans for the hobbit house is a landscaping project to rejuvenate the surrounding orchard.
The application reads: "Mr and Mrs Heeks were inspired by the place and believe that the only appropriate solution is a part-buried dwelling which maintains the local and wider landscape character."

The design for the three-bedroom abode is described as "simple in form, with expressed oak frames echoing the traditional framing of Herefordshire", featuring curved internal walls.
Aiming for high energy efficiency, the house would be "super-insulated" and include "the latest heat pump technology", also ensuring accessibility for those with mobility impairments.

There have been two prior applications by another party for similar semi-submerged houses on the site, both of which were withdrawn in 2022 and 2023 after facing objections, despite seeking pre-application advice since 2016.

The Heeks' proposal "looks to address all previous concerns" which might have caused the rejection of earlier plans – specifically, the effect on neighbouring properties and on the Dulas Brook.

To assess Wales' "luckiest" postcode, Casino Deps divided the total number of wins in each of Wales' six postal areas against the number of postcode districts in each area, determining the areas with the highest average number of wins. The postcodes were then ranked from "luckiest" to unluckiest accordingly. It has 35 postcode districts and a total of 856 wins. Shrewsbury (SY) is third, with an average of 18.24 wins across its 25 postcode districts. The area has had 456 wins overall. Although Shrewsbury is located in England, it is close to the Welsh border and covers Welsh postcodes. Swansea (SA) comes fourth, with 16.63 average wins per postcode district. The area's 51 postcode districts have accumulated 848 wins in total. Llandudno (LL) comes in fifth, with an average of 9.6 wins per postcode district. The area's 67 postcode districts have had 643 wins in total. Llandrindod Wells (LD) takes sixth place as the least likely area to win the Postcode Lottery, with an average of 6.5 wins per postcode district. The area's eight postcode districts have seen 52 wins in total. This could simply be down to more people in Newport being signed up to the Postcode Lottery. More sign-ups mean more chances to win, as only postcodes with active players are eligible. A Level results day 2025: Carmarthenshire students celebrate
On Thursday, August 14, students across the county received their grades, with 94.9 per cent achieving A*-E at A-level and 87.1 per cent reaching the same grades at AS Level. Shari, a student from Amman Valley School, said: "For my A-levels, I had 3 A*, A and a B which I'm really happy with and next year I'm looking forward to studying History at the University of Oxford." A total of 23.6 per cent of A-level students achieved A or A* grades, while 18.7 per cent of AS students earned an A. Councillor Glynog Davies, cabinet member for education and Welsh language, said: "Congratulations to our young people across Carmarthenshire who have received their A-level and AS results today. "These results are a testament to your hard work and dedication. "I would also like to thank the teachers, support staff, families and friends of our A-level students for the support they have shown.
