Supreme Court To Deliver Verdict On Stray Dog Removal From Delhi's Streets Tomorrow
Last Updated: Justice Vikram Nath's Supreme Court bench will deliver its verdict on Friday regarding petitions to remove stray dogs from Delhi streets. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Vikram Nath will on Friday pronounce its verdict on petitions seeking the removal of stray dogs from the streets of Delhi. The bench had reserved its order on the plea for interim relief, which questioned if immediate implementation of the directive should be put on hold. A recent Supreme Court ruling earlier this month directed authorities in Delhi-NCR to start picking up stray dogs from all localities 'at the earliest" and relocate the animals permanently to dog shelters. The order has drawn criticism from animal welfare groups, who argue that shelters are inadequate and ill-equipped and insist that the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, which mandates sterilisation and vaccination before releasing dogs back to their original locations, is the only lawful and humane solution. view comments First Published: August 21, 2025, 19:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Delhi lawyers announce strike against LG notification on Aug 22-23
New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) The coordination committee of all district bar associations in Delhi has decided to abstain from work across all district courts on August 22 and 23, saying authorities did not withdraw an August 13 order issued by Lieutenant Governor allowing police to virtually present evidence in courts from police stations, a release said. Tarun Rana, additional secretary general of the committee, said a representation requesting the notification's withdrawal was given to several authorities, including LG, union home minister and the Delhi chief minister. He said the representation raised strong objections against the notification but its non-consideration within two days compelled the district court bar bodies to raise a strict protest. 'Despite giving the representation, the notification has not been withdrawn by the authorities. Under such circumstances, when there is severe resentment amongst the legal fraternity against the arbitrary and unlawful notification which is against the fundamental law and the public at large, the committee in today's meeting has unanimously decided that there shall be a complete abstention of work in all the district courts on August 22 and 23," Rana said. The communication calls for the lawyers' strike and warns of strict action in case of non compliance. 'Coordination committee will convene its meeting on August 23, depending upon the prevailing circumstances, and decide further course of action," it added. Objection, Sustained: How A Madhya Pradesh Lawyer 'Disappeared' To Escape Marriage
Last Updated: Archana Tiwari, a lawyer from Madhya Pradesh, staged her disappearance to avoid marriage pressure. A missing-persons mystery that consumed police across Madhya Pradesh ended with a startling revelation: 29-year-old lawyer Archana Tiwari staged her own disappearance to avoid pressure from her family to marry, cops said. Archana, who was reported missing on August 5 after boarding the Narmada Express, was traced to Kathmandu after nearly two weeks of intensive searches. According to Government Railway Police (GRP) Superintendent Rahul Kumar Lodha, Archana Tiwari meticulously planned the escape with the help of a 24-year-old friend from Indore and his driver. The official said, 'She wanted to pursue her ambition of becoming a judge, but her family insisted she abandon her studies and marry a revenue officer. She decided to vanish and start a new life." How Archana Tiwari Planned Her Escape Investigators said Archana Tiwari leveraged her legal knowledge to design the disappearance. She believed vanishing during a train journey would shift responsibility to the GRP and reduce the chances of being tracked. On the night of August 5, she boarded the Narmada Express with a bag full of rakhis and gifts for her family. Hours later, at Narmadapuram station, she slipped away, where her friend was waiting in an SUV. She changed clothes and handed over her phone and smartwatch, which were discarded in a nearby forest to mislead investigators. The next morning, her family waited in vain at Katni South station. Only her abandoned bag was found, prompting fears she had met with an accident. From Itarsi, Archana Tiwari and her friend avoided toll booths and CCTV cameras, travelling by backroads through Shujalpur. As media coverage of the disappearance intensified, they decided to leave Madhya Pradesh. Their route took them through Burhanpur, Jodhpur and Delhi. Archana Tiwari eventually flew to Kathmandu while her friend stayed behind, keeping his phone on flight mode and occasionally using his father's SIM card to give the impression he was in Indore. The breakthrough came when the driver involved was detained in Delhi in an unrelated cheating case. Under questioning, details of the escape plan surfaced. Police then questioned Archana Tiwari's friend, who revealed her location. Investigators contacted her in Kathmandu and she agreed to return voluntarily. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
