Women are putting tacks in their flip-flops to mimic celeb-fave brand — but critics warn money-saving trend is ‘dangerous'

New York Post19-05-2025

These shoes are really tack-y.
It's safe to say this fashion fad is starting to stick. DIY fashionistas are setting off alarm bells by putting tacks in their flip-flops to imitate a viral celebrity couture trend, as seen in viral TikTok videos online.
The spiked sandal hack was inspired by a collaboration between Spanish fashion firm Gimaguas and Brazilian footwear brand Havaianas, in which the latter's eponymous flip-flops were studded and sent to Kylie Jenner and various celebrities, the Daily Mail reported.
The Barcelona-based label describes the footwear on their site as 'transforming our most treasured Havaianas styles using pieces from their archive, to complete our Summer Essentials.'

Despite oodles of enticing pictures online, the enhanced Havaianas are not 'available for purchase.'
But that didn't stop sartorially-minded MacGyvers from replicating the star-studded phenomenon using tacks, flip-flops and a little ingenuity.
In one DIY tutorial with nearly 650,000 views, content creator Izzi Poopi demonstrates how she takes an old pair of Havaianas, which retail for $30, and sticks two rows of push pins around the edges like the footwear equivalent of a studded belt.
'These are so cool! I'm obsessed,' gushed the metallic makeover artist, who then took her newly-spangled shoes for a test run, presumably to see if they felt uncomfortable.
She said they surprisingly didn't hurt at all, but warned viewers that leaving the beach cleats out in the sun for 'several hours' could result in the wearer 'f–king' burning their feet.

Another viral clip shows pin-fluencer @sofiagonzalezsv recreating the fad on the dirt-cheap by studding a pair of $4.99 flip-flops from Old Navy.
Many impressed viewers lauded the sandal acupuncturists for getting their kicks, with one commenter writing, 'I love it, I think I will do the same thing with mine.'
3 Some fashionistas only studded the outer rim so the foot wouldn't contact the metal.

'I did the same!' gushed another fad-shionista. 'I am loving this trend!! On my white ones, I mixed gold and silver thumb-tacks.'
'They should have just went ahead and released them, now they gotta sue the whole country,' quipped a third.
Some skeptics deemed the hack pin-headed, as the metal could burn, pinch or come loose and give the wearer an inadvertent piercing.
'I would be so stressed for one to pop out and poke ouchhhhhh,' fretted one worrywart, while another commented, 'Looks dangerous and gorgeous.'
'I would recommend to glue the pins,' advised a third TikTok Samaritan.
'Does it look like the flip-flop is poked through if you remove them?' inquired one, to which Poopi replied, 'Yeah.'
'The metal after sitting in the sun is gonna BURN,' cautioned one, reiterating Izzi Poopi's warning about the 'hot' couture.
In order to prevent an accidental sole-scorching, some footcover artists have taken to only studding the periphery and the edge of the flip-flop so that the trotter is not in direct contact with the metal.

Woman Finds Grave in Backyard After Moving In, Then Photos Reveal The Truth

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A new homeowner discovered what appeared to be a grave in her new yard and always wondered who it belonged to—then one day she found heartbreaking photographs which revealed all. Krystal Castillo, 33, is from Miami, Florida, and moved into a new house in 2024. Before too long, when exploring her backyard, she found a pet's grave marker, engraved with the name Honey. As she told Newsweek: "I had only seen the [grave] stone, and this gave me a glimpse into what she looked like and how loved she was." Months later, Castillo found photographs hidden in their home, saying: "The photos were found in a closet on a dusty top shelf, where a few miscellaneous items were left behind like screws and old manuals." She shared a video to her TikTok account @elsieandkrystal on March 30, first showing the grave marker alongside the words: "Found this in our backyard when we moved in and wondered what she must have been like and how loved she must have been." TikTok @elsieandkrystal The clip then switched to show the newly-found photographs, all of them showing a Collie relaxing in the home Castillo now lived in. And by the dog's side in every photo was a Beanie Baby of—just like Honey—a Collie dog. Collies, also known as Rough Collies, are best-known as the breed from the iconic 'Lassie' series. They are described as devoted to their families, proud and graceful, and excellent with young children, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). While it's known how old Honey was when she passed, the AKC says the breed has a lifespan of between 12 to 14 years. Castillo told Newsweek: "It broke my heart when I found them, because I always wondered what Honey must have been like." She said it was obvious the dog was a much-loved member of the family, pointing out how the owners had "bought her a Beanie Baby that looked like her." TikTok users were hugely moved by the story, awarding the video more than 100,000 views. Photographs of the Collie, which Castillo found on a top shelf in her new home. TikTok @elsieandkrystal One emotional commenter wrote: "This is why I cremated my soul boy, I couldn't bare leaving him behind if I loved [sic]," as another declared: "RIP to all the pets that had to be left behind when their houses were sold." "That is why I started cremating my babies; I've left a few behind and couldn't do it anymore," another admitted as well, adding: "Thank you for keeping her memory safe." Others shared their own stories, as one commenter wrote: "My farm has a pet cemetery from the previous owners. They lived here 30 years and had a few dogs who now rest here forever. I tend to the cemetery with love and my heart dog now rests beside them." Reacting to the major response to her video, Castillo told Newsweek: "I find it so heartwarming that so many people have found a connection to the video as dog lovers." Official: Barcelona star wins Champions League Golden Boot award

A headline member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona on Saturday night secured for himself an altogether prestigious individual award. The prize in question? The Champions League Golden Boot. Advertisement The finale of European football's premiere club competition was of course contested in Munich yesterday evening, between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan. When all was said and done, it was the former who emerged dominant victors, by five goals to nil. And as alluded to above, joining PSG in celebrating, albeit for an altogether different reason, on Saturday, was Barcelona star Raphinha. Winger Raphinha is of course fresh off a spectacular campaign in the Champions League, which saw the Brazilian rack up 13 goals and nine assists. And such exploits have now officially proven enough to secue for the former Leeds United man an individual piece of silverware. With 13 goals to his name, Raphinha has finished as the Champions League's joint top-scorer, alongside Serhou Guirassy, enough for a share of the competition's Golden Boot. Conor Laird – GSFN
