State Police Director testifies before Senate on human trafficking bill
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois State Police were at the State Capitol this week to help combat human trafficking.
Director Brendan Kelly, along with stakeholders representing survivors, law enforcement and support service providers, appeared before the Senate Criminal Law Committee today to speak about Senate Bill 2323. The bill includes development of a strategic plan to improve the victim-centered, trauma-informed law enforcement response to people who have been trafficked. Plus, it develops standards for detecting, investigating and responding to human trafficking.
To combat the issue, State Police said its Trafficking Enforcment Bureau, conducted seven operations in the last year, resulting in 31 arrests and 90 criminal charges. Bloomington, Danville and Effingham were just a few of the cities where the operations were carried out.

'There's a long list of requirements that ISP is undertaking just for us as an agency in addition to other agencies are going to be responsible for,' Kelly said before the Criminal Law Committee. 'But we'll be serving as a hub for creation of multi-disciplinary human trafficking task forces where non currently exist we're going to facilitate cooperation between those task forces regular scheduled trainings.'
The Trafficking Enforcement Bureau was formed in 2022 and since then, more than 1,200 State Police officers have been trained on human trafficking awareness. More than 130 officers were trained in advanced investigative techniques.

Police seeking man who dragged officer with car while fleeing
SOMERS, Conn. (WTNH) — State Police are looking for a Somers man after he allegedly dragged a Somers Police officer with his car during a wellness check on Monday night. According to State Police, officers from Troop C in Tolland and Somers Police officers responded to a residence on School Street for the wellness check. Two killed in Jefferson Parish car crash
JEFFERSON PARISH (WGNO) — Two people were killed Monday, June 9 in a car crash in Jefferson Parish. According to Louisiana State Police, 80-year-old Oscar Carter IV and a passenger, 77-year-old Martha Bradford, were killed in a car crash on LA 3152 near King Street. There was a third passenger who survived with minor injuries. State Police said Carter was driving a 2013 Infiniti G37 north in the center lane. A Nissan Altima was traveling north in the left lane. The Infiniti veered into the left lane and struck the right side of the Nissan, then entered the median and hit a tree. The Nissan crossed the median into the southbound lanes and struck a 2020 Buick Encore traveling south. Bradford also suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she later died. Neither Carter nor Bradford were restrained. One person killed in early morning crash in Salisbury, State Police say
One person died in an early morning crash Monday in Salisbury, State Police said. At about 3:30 a.m. on Monday, State Police dispatchers received a report of a single-vehicle crash on North Road. The caller reported that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck crashed into a tree, leaving the driver unconscious. Members of the Salisbury Fire Department arrived on the scene first, and determined the driver had died of injuries suffered in the crash. The crash remains under investigation. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, State Police said.
