FUW give evidence to Westminster's Welsh Affairs Committee
Last week the Farmers' Union of Wales welcomed the opportunity to present evidence to Westminster's Welsh Affairs Committee inquiry into the challenges and opportunities facing farming in Wales in 2025.
The FUW was represented by our Head of Policy, Gareth Parry, who was questioned by MPs on a number of the ongoing challenges facing Welsh agriculture; including the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, the changes to agricultural and business property relief and how changes to the UK Government's funding for Welsh agriculture will impact the sustainability of the sector.
As part of the session, the FUW highlighted the impact the UK's departure from the EU has had due to the loss of the intermediate-term stability provided by the EU's seven year Multiannual Financial Framework.
The lack of such replacement financial frameworks has allowed the UK Government to apply the Barnett Formula to any future adjustments to Welsh agricultural funding, meaning that Wales will receive subsequent uplifts based on a historical share of the UK population as opposed to rural needs.
Beyond the uncertainty regarding future farm funding, the FUW also highlighted how successive UK governments' appetite to sign trade agreements with other countries has undermined domestic food production.
These agreements threaten to pull the rug from beneath Welsh farmers by reforming agricultural policies and replacing domestic food production with imports, with little consideration of the economic viability of Welsh farming businesses.
Several questions during the session focused on the proposed inheritance tax reforms, with Mr Parry relaying the latest figures from Family Business UK and CBI Economics on the potential impacts for the UK economy.
In summary, the report suggests that the reduction in business activity will lead to a loss in Gross Value Added (GVA) of £14.8 billion over the next five years.
These latest figures again demonstrate HM Treasury's failure to consider the wider economic and social impacts of the proposed changes, and far-reaching implications on Welsh family farms and the economy.
Frustratingly, it's been clear since the Budget announcement that HM Treasury Officials have had no intention of even acknowledging our concerns.
They have slammed the door on the industry and appear to have thrown away the key.
It remains the case that the FUW are not calling for the policy to be scrapped, however we continue to seek an opportunity to design a policy with HM Treasury that works for genuine family farms whilst closing the loopholes that currently exist.

Hywel Peterson awarded MBE for work with NSPCC Cymru
Hywel Peterson received the honour from the Prince of Wales at a ceremony in Windsor Castle to recognise his efforts for NSPCC, one of Newsquest's key charity partners last year. Mr Peterson has been chairman of the Welsh fundraising board since its inception in 2023 and was previously a member of the NSPCC Wales Appeal Board from 2016 to 2019. He said: "It was a wonderful honour to receive my MBE from the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle and to share the moment with my parents, who have always supported and encouraged me in everything I have done. 'The Prince of Wales asked about my charity work and showed a genuine interest in the NSPCC in Wales and the different ways we raise money for vulnerable children, especially given the difficult economic climate. 'There has never been a more important time to ensure we do all we can for this vital cause.' Under Mr Peterson's leadership, NSPCC Cymru's fundraising board raised more than £1 million for the charity's services in its first year. The funds were used to help essential services like the 'Speak Out Stay Safe' safeguarding programme and Childline. Assistant director at NSPCC Cymru, Carl Harris, paid tribute to Mr Peterson. He said: "Hywel's commitment to NSPCC Cymru and our mission is exceptional and, on behalf of our charity and the children in Wales who we help every day, I would like to thank him for his continuing hard work and congratulate him on this deserved honour. "Hywel's leadership of the NSPCC Cymru Fundraising Board, which raised £1m in its first year, is making an enormous contribution to our fight for every childhood."

Catherine Fookes MP on Welsh public services funding
This is a clear example of two Labour governments in Westminster and the Senedd, working together to invest in our country's renewal and deliver for people across the UK. I know that many people across the UK are angry and fed up. After 15 years of Conservative underinvestment in our public services and infrastructure, Wales in particular, has been left underfunded for far too long, with the Welsh Government doing their absolute best to deliver for Wales, dealing with limited budgets and an uncooperative UK Government. Compare that with today, it's so encouraging to see the UK Government committed to working with our Welsh Labour Government and finally giving Wales the investment it deserves. I know some people across Monmouthshire are still angry and fed up, and rightly so. 15 years of neglect by the former UK Conservative Government can't be undone overnight. People want to see action and they want to see real change in their daily lives. I truly believe that with this new partnership between the UK and Welsh Labour Governments, we finally have the opportunity to start delivering that. One of the most exciting announcements from last week's Spending Review was the £450 million allocated to rail infrastructure in Wales. This gives us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to finally deliver a new train station in Magor and Undy – a project I've long supported alongside MS John Griffiths, MP Jessica Morden, Labour councillors on Monmouthshire County Council, and the Magor Rail Group. From knocking on doors and speaking with residents, I know how much this station means to our community. It would deliver greener, more reliable transport, ease congestion, and open up new job opportunities by better connecting us to the wider region. I've already raised the project in Parliament and held conversations with transport ministers, so I'm glad to see that this project could soon become a reality. I'll keep pushing to ensure Magor Walkway Station receives its share of this new funding and hope that we can get spades into the ground as soon as possible. But it's not just about transport. Wales will also benefit from £211 million each year for the next three years via a Growth and Community Fund, supporting our high streets, community centres, and investing in local regeneration. Other highlights from the Spending Review include: £80 million for green industries in Wales to drive the clean energy transition. £211 million a year for three years to support local growth and regeneration projects as a replacement to the Shared Prosperity Fund £118 million to maintain and make safe coal tips across Wales This is just the beginning. For the first time in a long time, we have two Labour Governments working hand-in-hand, and the benefits of that are being felt already. There's more cooperative decision-making, more fair funding, and more opportunity to deliver real, positive change for all of us across Monmouthshire. As your MP, I'll continue doing everything I can to make sure all of us here get our fair share of this investment. That means not only fighting your corner in Parliament, but also staying closely connected to your concerns and priorities at home. That's why I'm continuing to host regular face-to-face constituency surgeries to support residents with specific problems. Natasha Asghar MS visits Newport Principality branch
The visit was part of celebrations marking the society's 165th anniversary. The Principality Building Society, with its largest branch presence across Wales, declared in April its commitment to maintaining high street and community presence until 2030. This decision stems from consistent member feedback and research that indicates more than 70 per cent of people consider branch presence crucial when choosing a financial provider. Kelly Young, head of savings customer services, said: "Cash remains a vital part of daily life for many—not just as a payment method, but as a pillar of financial stability, especially for small businesses, residents, and rural communities." She added that the society is committed to investing in its network and ensuring access to cash for the communities it serves. Natasha Asghar, member of the Senedd for South Wales East, commended the society's dedication to maintaining its local branches and services across Welsh communities. She said: "With over 160 years of service, the Principality remains a cornerstone of Welsh town centres and has the strongest high street presence of any financial services provider in the country." The society was first established in Cardiff in 1860.
