Rakesh Roshan carried huge financial burdens to launch Hrithik Roshan: ‘He mortgaged his house, cars, and office,' recalls daughter Sunaina Roshan

Time of India25-04-2025

Rakesh Roshan
is now known as one of Bollywood's most successful filmmakers, but there was a time when he put everything on the line—his house, his cars, even his office—to launch his son
Hrithik Roshan
into films. That turning point came with the 2000 blockbuster '
Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai
.' In a recent interview, Rakesh's daughter
Sunaina Roshan
opened up about the difficult times their father faced and how he never let the family know what he was going through.
A dream fueled by risk
Before becoming a top director and producer, Rakesh Roshan had a decent acting career. But his real test came when he wanted to launch Hrithik. In her interview with News18, Sunaina Roshan said, 'We were very young to understand, especially when Dad started his acting career. As a producer, he had mortgaged his house twice, and the cars and the office during 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' and 'Khudgarz.' He gambled with his life a lot, but he was fearless in doing so.'
At the time, Sunaina and Hrithik were just kids. She remembers how they were completely unaware of the stress their father was under. 'We never knew that side of him because he never showed us what we were going through. My brother and I both had a very peaceful childhood,' she said.

Sunaina shared that even though Rakesh Roshan was carrying huge financial burdens, he never let it affect his home life. 'We never had to deal with people talking about our backgrounds because times were very different back then. There was no social media, thankfully, and Dad himself didn't make it that big,' she added.
The shocking truth Hrithik didn't know
Hrithik himself found out the truth much later. He only realized how much was at stake during a disagreement with his dad while working on 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.' The scene is described in the documentary 'The Roshans.' Hrithik said, 'I always saw the glass half-full. I had not color-corrected two or three scenes because I was handling that. And the overseas prints had already been sent. So, I came to my dad, really upset that, 'How could you let that go?' And I think that was the first time that my dad gave it back to me. He gave it back to me in my face. He turned to my mom, and he said, 'I am doing everything for him, and he's sitting here, and he's complaining.' And that's the night I found out, my mom told me, that the house was mortgaged, the cars were mortgaged… I realized how much was at stake.'

Arizona: Explosive report claims drama professor accused of forcing student to undress onstage, watch porn

Arizona: Explosive report claims drama professor accused of forcing student to undress onstage, watch porn. (Pic credit: MCC website) A shocking investigative report by the Arizona Republic has unveiled disturbing allegations against a drama professor at Mesa Community College, Mace Archer, 56, who is accused of coercing students to strip, flirting, and exposing them to pornography during class. School officials have launched an investigation into the claims, though students assert their complaints were ignored for months before the probe. According to the report, students in Archer's drama class maintained a shared file documenting two years of alleged "sexual depravity." This file reportedly contains over a dozen anonymous accusations. Among the most unsettling allegations are claims that Archer coached a student to "dive into" her personal experience of sexual assault for performance purposes and, in another alleged incident, straddled a student during a "demonstration." He is also accused of playing "orgy porn" videos for his students. Most disturbingly, Archer is alleged to have coerced three female students, some of whom were still teenagers, into taking off their clothes on stage. Under the guise of "vulnerability exercises" for midterms, students were reportedly forced to strip down to their underwear or go completely nude in front of Archer and their classmates. A student in Archer's class, told the Republic that the purpose of the midterm was for students to face their fears, not to end up nude. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo However, she and other female students claim Archer made it precisely about that. "On the first day, two women stripped down to their underwear. The person who got naked was on the second day," the student recounted. "We all knew what to expect." She described the scene of one student stripping silently, "She was just silent. She just took her clothes off. People were kind of shocked, but it was silent. No music, no talking, nothing." The student was one of approximately 16 students in a second-level acting class taught by Archer, which she said was intended to test the limits of students' fear. While school officials would not confirm to the Arizona Republic whether encouraging or watching students undress in an acting class constituted an explicit policy violation, the publication noted that school rules prohibit "any unwelcome conduct that a reasonable person would find so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive that it denies a person equal educational access." Administrators for Maricopa Community Colleges, the district overseeing Mesa Community College, declined interview requests from the Arizona Republic. Lindsey Wilson, a spokesperson for the district, said in a May 19 email, "Because this is an active personnel matter, we cannot provide specific details to protect the privacy of those involved." Wilson added, "Our colleges take any allegations of misconduct seriously and are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff," assuring that appropriate action would be taken based on the investigation's outcome. The Mesa Police Department confirmed it is not currently investigating the accusations.

'I miss my bondhu': Prosenjit Chatterjee remembers Rituparno Ghosh on his death anniversary

Prosenjit Chatterjee fondly remembers Rituparno Ghosh on his death anniversary, reflecting on their collaborations like 'Unnishe April' and 'Doshor,' which earned him a National Award. He acknowledges Ghosh's impact on his career and personal life, missing their close bond and the guidance he provided. Chatterjee also identifies Atanu Ghosh as a key inheritor of Rituparno Ghosh's cinematic legacy. On Rituparno Ghosh's death anniversary, actor Prosenjit Chatterjee opens up in an exclusive conversation with ETimes about their deep bond, cinematic milestones, and the emotional void left behind by the iconic filmmaker. From Unnishe April to Doshor, Prosenjit reflects on how Ritu shaped his journey as an actor — and as a friend. Excerpts... When did you first meet Rituparno Ghosh? I think the first time I met him was at Rinaji's (Aparna Sen's) place, long back. He was a boy with long curly hair, very young. Later on, of course, I came to know he was doing a film with Debashree Roy . I was just married; he came to my place for a narration. That is how your first collaboration Unnishe April happened? Suddenly, he told me if I could do a guest role in that particular film, which I never took seriously. It was a very different kind of film with a small role for me after my first film with Debashree (Purushottam). So I just took it very lightly. But once I worked with Rituda in Unnishe April, after the film got released—though I had just two or three scenes in the film, though I was a superstar at that time, and I was doing all mainstream stuff—people started writing such good words and something like, 'We have not seen Prosenjit in this way. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Promoções imperdíveis de voos baratos Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo ' I think that gave me a very big kick. Among all your collaborations with Rituparno Ghosh, which do you think is the most important? Though all my films with him are superb, I think till today, people remember the film for which I got my National Award—and it was Doshor with Konkona Sen. I think that's the film people say I've done such a different kind of work in. And for me also, Doshor was one of those most challenging characters. I really wondered if I could do it. Ritu had made me—he really helped me to do that character. Who among the contemporary Bengali filmmakers are the true inheritors of Rituparno Ghosh's legacy? Every Bengali director of today's generation has a huge respect for Ritu—not only as a filmmaker, but his style and the way he used to tell the story. But of course, Atanu Ghosh, I think, is one of those directors who maintained a very different kind of cinema and carried forward Ritu's legacy. He is doing it very cautiously—not following Ritu's steps, I will say—but he has his own way of telling stories. Things have changed, and there's a more commercial consideration. But I think Atanu Ghosh has maintained that cinema which Ritu made, in the way he wants to do. And I still remember, when I used to ask Ritu who was his inheritor, he would say Atanu. Who else? There is Kaushik Ganguly—he is also a wonderful director. Srijit Mukherjee is also a great director. Everybody wants to do something. In fact, today, a trailer is going to be launched for a film dedicated to Ritu. I have to go just to bless them. They are dedicating this film to Rituparno Ghosh. So, and I'm going just as a friend. I was one of the closest friends of Ritu, apart from his directorial work, whatever we have done. Normally, I don't talk about Ritu, because he was my closest. I don't want to talk about Soumitra Kaku (Chatterjee) again, because I really feel sad. I don't want to believe that they are not in this world. I really miss Soumitra Kaku also—the same as Ritu. Soumitra Kaku was my father figure, like, he was my—my, I will say—guide. He was my inspiration. We all miss Rituparno Ghosh? I mean, honestly speaking, what I really miss after Ritu left me is that I don't have a place where I can go and open up. Like, you know, everybody is senior to me, or they're much younger to me. So I've become a father figure now. Ritu used to be somebody I could go to for guidance. He was a true friend. He was my ghar ka dost. Ritu made Chokher Bali long back, and that was a pan-India film. He practically helped me reinvent myself as an actor. I miss my Bondhu. Check out our list of the latest Hindi , English , Tamil , Telugu , Malayalam , and Kannada movies .
