Rachel Proudley wins historic Puissance for Britain

Britain's Rachel Proudley took victory in the Defender Puissance at the Dublin Horse Shoe, her horse Easy Boy de Laubry Z clearing the 2.15m height with ease as Ireland's Paddy O'Donnell settled for second place.
Waterford's O'Donnell had ensured at least runners-up spot with Kilcorig Elysium showing tremendous heart to go clear in 2.10m. However, they wouldn't have a shot at the gold medal as O'Donnell concluded he couldn't ask any more of the Nigel Jackson-bred grey.
It was a historic victory for Proudley, the European U21 Individual gold medallist, who became the first female rider to win the Puissance in 61 years.

There was glory for Ireland earlier on Saturday as Mikey Pender and HHS Fortune triumphed in the Royal Society Dublin Stakes.
Meanwhile, Niamh McEvoy announced herself in the senior ranks in style by bagging her maiden five-star victory in the prestigious Dublin Stakes with the talented ten-year-old Flora Du Mesnil.

The teenager became the youngest player to make his European debut for Chelsea earlier this year BOY WONDER Chelsea wonderkid Reggie Walsh, 16, goes head-to-head with Luka Modric, 39, just days before getting GCSE results REGGIE WALSH is the latest young superstar to have emerged from the Chelsea academy - and he went toe-to-toe with a legend on Sunday. Born in October 2008, the midfielder made his debut for the Blues in the Conference League semi-final first leg against Djurgardens last season. 4 Reggie Walsh featured for Chelsea against AC Milan in a friendly on Sunday Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 4 Walsh played against the likes of Luka Modric Credit: Getty He came off the bench late in the clash for a two-minute cameo, becoming the third-youngest Chelsea first-team player ever behind Ian Hamilton and Kingsley Whiffen. Walsh then became the club's youngest-ever European starter the following week in the second leg. He was named in the line-up alongside the likes of Reece James, Jadon Sancho and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at Stamford Bridge. The 16-year-old was preparing for his GCSEs when he made his full debut. At the time, head coach Enzo Maresca said: "His talent is very good. Technique is fantastic. I really like him. Between the lines is good, you can see immediately he has something. "For sure at 17, 18, he needs to work hard and continue. I like also the personality, he's worked with us during the season. "He's not shy, he's asking for the ball, he's shouting and talking. I like it, he's a good player." Walsh missed out on a place in Chelsea's travelling Club World Cup squad earlier this summer. But he was handed some minutes during the club's final pre-season friendly against AC Milan on Sunday. The teenager shared the pitch with Real Madrid icon and six-time Champions League winner Luka Modric, who is 23 years older than him, during the 4-1 win. Due to his age, Walsh is currently unable to sign a professional contract. He will likely pen his first pro deal when he turns 17 in October. Walsh joined Chelsea at the age of seven and progressed through the age groups before making his first-team debut last season. He spent much of the 2024-25 campaign playing for the Under-18s. The midfielder scored four goals and provided two assists for the U18s last term. He has also made 11 appearances for England at youth level.

Cathal Murray hails incredible and resilient champions

Galway camogie manager Cathal Murray has hailed the work of his "incredible" squad as they spoiled Cork's three-in-a-row bid in Croke Park after a dramatic All-Ireland final yesterday. Speaking to RTÉ Sport after the game, the Sarsfields club man felt that the Tribeswomen got what they deserved in an incredible final performance. "The performance out there was absolutely outstanding and everyone died on their feet. There's huge resilience in this group." "When Orla Cahalane got the goal, brought it back to level, it was a massive point in the game, it looked like we were gone," he said post-game. Cork's history-chasing run was not lost on Galway, with both Murray and Ailish O'Reilly referencing it after the thrilling decider. "We were kind of wrote off all week. I don't think anyone had given us a chance, but we knew after last year, losing by three points, we knew if we performed, we always say it about Galway, if we perform, we're as good as any team", Murray said. Galway overcame the odds in one of the great finals in recent memory, and Murray was also quick to point out that coming up just short in recent years was also a massive driving factor. "We won two All-Irelands in 2019 and 2021 and then we had a barren period. We lost two semi-finals to the eventual All-Ireland champions in 2022 and 2023", he said. "Obviously last year was cutting. We got so much right, we performed so well but Cork were the better team. We can have no excuses. "We knew if we got back here that we would give it another go and to win three All-Irelands, and we've won three All-Irelands in seven years and that's really, really special." Following the first half dismissal of Hannah Looney, Cork responded strong in the second half, which Murray expected. "They're an absolutely savage team and they're unbelievable champions. As Carrie (Dolan) said, down to 14 players and still to come at us with whatever need to come at us in the second half." Galway produced a 70-minute performance, the type needed to dethrone a great champion like Cork. However, as Murray referenced, Galway came through a tricky path to the final and managed to get over the line, speaking to the mentality of the squad. "With this team, I know we lost the league final, but we weren't ready. We did not have our homework done and we knew that. "We turned it around and we wanted to be ready for the first championship game against Dublin. "When you beat Dublin, Derry, Waterford, Tipperary and Kilkenny to get to an All-Ireland final, you deserve to be there. "To beat Cork today, the champions that they are, it's just unbelievable. "This team is incredible and it's going to be we're going to celebrate it long and hard." FT: Galway 1-14 Cork 1-13 Carrie Dolan wins it for the Tribeswomen with a huge free in injury time Watch on @rte2 and @rteplayer #SundayGame — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) August 10, 2025 The deciding score would come from Galway's inspirational captain Dolan. The Clarinbridge forward struck seven frees, the last of which to win the game coming deep in injury time to snatch victory for Cathal Murray's squad. The manager had full faith in the reliable ball striker to come up with the goods in the closing stages. "Carrie does that every day of the week", he said. "I think she missed one in the league final against Tipperary last year. That hit her hard, but she scored one against Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final last year. "That free, a pressure free and in the last minute of an All-Ireland, that's just unbelievable stuff. "She's captain for a reason. She's captain because she's a leader. Herself and everyone else out there were just absolutely exceptional."

'You can't carry too many' - Ireland set to name World Cup squad

The players already know and at 10 o'clock this morning Ireland rugby fans will know who's going on the plane to England for the World Cup. Head coach Scott Bemand spoke to reporters after Saturday's 47-26 loss to Canada in Belfast and indicated that prop Christy Haney is likely to miss out with a hamstring injury, and was non-committal on the prospects of star back row Aoife Wafer being deemed fit after knee surgery. In addition, co-captain Edel McMahon is recovering from a knee injury that kept her out of both of the warm-up games. Ireland face Japan on Sunday week in Northampton and take on Spain and New Zealand on the following Sundays. Asked about the risks of naming two currently injured back rows in the squad, Bemand admitted that a balance had to be struck. "You are dead right, there is always a balance around who you can take and who you can't, we call them salvageable injuries," he told RTÉ Sport. "'Tricky' [McMahon] is bang on track. If this was a World Cup quarter-final, 'Tricky' would have been in the mix for selection. She's well placed. "Aoife, we said this one came a little bit too soon. We'll continue to progress and assess. "You certainly can't carry too many. "Having done this before with a slightly smaller squad and the knock on of workload picked up by other people, we know we need a squad to get what we want out of this competition. "We've had to balance that in with some selections. In the main, 'Tricky's' pretty close." The addition of former England prop Ellena Perry, who qualifies through an Irish grandparent, to the training squad over the summer was an early indication that experienced front row Haney was racing against time. "Christy obviously picked up a bump with her hamstring which is a real shame for her. She worked really hard. "We're assessing as we go through. "It obviously meant we needed to bring somebody in the front row. "I've been incredibly proud and pleased with how the pathway is performing in terms of developing the likes of Sophie Barrett. "Sophie was in the conversation to bring in. Beth [Buttimer] has come in. "Ellena, obviously my previous work [with the Red Roses], I'd worked with Elle, we knew what standard she's at and it got highlighted to us that she's IQ. "So we were able to activate a process that could reach out to her, ask if she wanted to come in for an opportunity with nothing promised." On the tough conversations he's had to have with some players, Bemand (below) said that the "players have also professionalised in terms of how they handle when selections are coming over the horizon." Speaking to RTÉ Sport, he referred to the recent Lions tour in which numerous players who missed out on original selection received call-ups. "The fact that the girls are putting themselves in a position to compete for something as special as a World Cup is to be applauded," he said. "It doesn't make it not hurt if you are in a group. Those girls that won't end up getting on the plane are hugely important to us. "The competition within training couldn't have looked like it did without them. "There is a tough pill to swallow if you are not in that but anyone who has followed the Lions will have seen that you are a dead leg away from getting a call-up and should that moment happen and you are on a plane and your first game is a quarter-final of a World Cup, you've got to be ready. "They'll feel the pain rather than the happiness but we also understand we've got a job to do. "We're representing Ireland in a World Cup and we get a chance to put ourselves, our green wave on the world stage.
