Suspect faces felony charges in killings of 'American Idol' music supervisor, husband

USA Today17-07-2025
LOS ANGELES — The suspect in the killings of longtime "American Idol" music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband Tom Deluca is making his first court appearance.
Raymond Boodarian, 22, was due to appear for an arraignment and plea at Los Angeles County's Van Nuys West Courthouse on Thursday, July 17. Prosecutors appear to be pursuing two felony murder counts and first-degree burglary that involved another person's presence in the residence and intentional discharge of a firearm, according to court records reviewed by USA TODAY.
The murder counts reference statutes that specify the acts involved more than one murder victim as well as intentionally discharging a firearm, resulting in "great bodily injury," and were also allegedly committed while engaged in an act of robbery.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for comment.
According to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department inmate records, Boodarian is being held at a jail in Van Nuys, California, in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. The Encino resident was arrested around 3 p.m. July 15, a day after Los Angeles Police Department Officers discovered 70-year-old Deluca and Kaye dead in their Encino, California, home while conducting a welfare check.

Investigation into Robin Kaye, Tom Deluca's deaths is ongoing
At around 2:30 p.m. on July 14, officers conducted a welfare check at the couple's house following a report from a person who "had not heard from the resident for several days," the Los Angeles Police Department said in a July 15 statement. Officers later entered the residence and discovered two bodies, later identified as Kaye, 70, and Deluca, 70.
Police were called days earlier, on July 10, for a "possible burglary suspect at the residence." But signs of forced entry or trouble were not found, the LAPD said. Investigators now believe that the suspect gained entry into the residence that day through an unlocked door and that the couple returned home while the suspect was still there.
Court records show the date of Boodarian's alleged offenses as July 10.
"A confrontation ensued, which resulted in the suspect taking their lives," the LAPD said. "The victims succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, and the suspect fled from the residence on foot."
Investigators are determining whether Boodarian has any connection to the couple and if he was involved in past service calls to the Encino home. The investigation is ongoing.
The suspect has previously faced misdemeanor charges in LA County for alleged offenses dating from November 2023 to June 2024. The charges, which included battery, exhibiting a deadly weapon and threatening to commit a crime with intent to terrorize in three cases, were all dismissed.
Court records show competency hearings were held in July and August 2024, and he was released from custody Dec. 6, the same day a mental health conservatorship investigation report was presented.
USA TODAY has reached out to Los Angeles County public defenders who represented Boodarian in these cases for comment.
'A cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009'
An "American Idol" spokesperson confirmed the deaths of Kaye and Deluca to USA TODAY on July 15.
"We are devastated to hear of Robin and her dear husband, Tom's, passing," the spokesperson said in a statement. "Robin has been a cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009 and was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her. Robin will remain in our hearts forever, and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time."
Kaye began her 16-year stint as "Idol's" music supervisor in Season 8, which crowned Kris Allen as the winner in 2009. She worked in the role, which entails clearing music for use on the competition show, through the most recent Season 23, which crowned Jamal Roberts as the winner on May 18.
She is also credited as the music supervisor for the NAACP Image Awards and several Miss Universe pageants, most recently in 2023.
Kaye has received several accolades, including the Guild of Music Supervisors' best music supervision in reality television award in 2014.

WNBA says individual that threw sex toy on court at Dream game has been arrested

An individual that threw a sex toy onto the court during the Golden State Valkyries' 77-75 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday at Gateway Center in College Park, Georgia, has been arrested, the WNBA confirmed to USA TODAY on Saturday. The incident happened in the final minute of Tuesday's contest as the Dream and Valkyries were tied at 75. The lime green object was thrown from the stands onto the court and landed near the top of the free throw line shortly after Atlanta's Maya Caldwell blocked a 3-point attempt from Golden State's Tiffany Hayes. Officials did not stop play as the object bounced toward the sidelines. A police officer later picked the item up using a towel. Days later, another sex toy was thrown onto the court during the Golden State's 73-66 victory over the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Friday. The incident happened with 7:42 remaining in the third quarter as the Sky led 39-37. Officials immediately halted play after a green object landed out of bounds under the basket. "The subject involved in the incident in Atlanta on Tuesday has been arrested," the WNBA said in a statement to USA TODAY on Saturday. A number of WNBA players have spoken out against the string of incidents. Sky center Elizabeth Williams said it's "super disrespectful," while Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said flying objects could "hurt one of us." "I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up," Williams said following Friday's game. New York Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison added, "ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??! Please do better. It's not funny. never was funny. Throwing ANYTHING on the court is so dangerous." The WNBA said any spectator caught throwing anything on the court will be "immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban," in addition to facing charges. "The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league," the WNBA said. "Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities." Trump addresses pardon decision for Sean 'Diddy' Combs, but questions remain

President Donald Trump is breaking his silence on pardoning Sean "Diddy" Combs for the first time since he was acquitted of the most serious charges in a federal sex-crimes trial last month. In an interview that aired Friday, Aug. 1 on Newsmax with host Rob Finnerty, Trump discussed the possibility of presidential pardons for convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, Combs and former Rep. George Santos. After Finnerty asked, "Sean 'Diddy' Combs. Would you consider pardoning him?" Trump responded: "Well he was essentially, I guess sort of, half-innocent. I don't know what they do, he's still in jail or something. He was celebrating a victory but I guess it wasn't as good of a victory." Trump 'should not pardon' Sean 'Diddy' 'Diddy' Combs, Megyn Kelly says On July 2, jurors found Combs not guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking ex-girlfriends Casandra "Cassie" Ventura Fine and a woman known as "Jane" in his sweeping trial that nearly lasted two months. He was convicted July 2 on two of the five counts against him for transporting those same women for prostitution, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years per count. During the interview, Trump said "probably..." before pausing and revealing to Finnerty, "You know, I was very friendly with him, I got along with him great, seemed like a nice guy. I didn't know him well, but when I ran for office he was very hostile." The Newsmax host noted then that "he said some not so nice things about you, sir." "Yeah, and it's hard. You know, like you, we're human beings and we don't like to have things cloud our judgement, right?" the president continued. "But when you knew someone and you were fine and then you run for office and he made some terrible statements… so I don't know... it makes it more difficult to do." Then, Trump replied, "I'd say so," when Finnerty clarified by asking if it was "more likely a no for (pardoning) Combs?" In the interview, Trump was seemingly referencing Combs' expletive-filled 2017 comments in The Daily Beast, essentially saying that "(Black people) don't really" care about Trump. "The tomfoolery that's going on in D.C., that's just regular everyday business to Black folks," Combs told the left-leaning outlet in-part, adding later in the interview that he had to "keep it focused on that self-love that we need to give our race." Trump first weighed in on the possibility of pardoning Combs on May 30 in the Oval Office. "Nobody's asked" about a pardon, the president said. "But I know people are thinking about it. I know they're thinking about it. I think some people have been very close to asking." Trump added, "I haven't spoken to him in years. He really liked me a lot." Despite last month's verdict, Combs' legal saga continues. On Wednesday, July 31, lawyers for Combs requested his acquittal, or a new trial altogether, in court documents reviewed by USA TODAY. A day earlier, conservative host Megyn Kelly urged Trump against potentially pardoning Combs. Kelly said in an X post on July 30 that "Trump should not pardon Diddy" because "he doesn't deserve it." "He's a Trump hater. He's a woman abuser. MAGA is already upset over elites seeming to cover for each other. This would not help. GOP struggling w/young female voters, most of whom will HATE a Diddy pardon," Kelly wrote. Contributing: Taijuan Moorman
