PETALING JAYA: The automotive industry's earnings visibility is still good, backed by a booking backlog of 130,000 units as of the end of February this year.
More than half of the backlog is made up of new models, indicating the appeal of new models to car buyers, said Kenanga Research.
The trend is likely to persist throughout this year given a strong line-up of new launches, the research house added.
Meanwhile, RHB Research expects the total industry volume (TIV) to be seasonally softer in the second quarter of this year (2Q25), impacted by the Hari Raya holidays and scheduled factory maintenance at Perodua and Proton.
The research house remained cautious on the outlook of the automotive sector amid persistent price competition in the non-national segment and easing order backlogs.
It maintained a 'neutral' call on the sector, reflecting its expectation of a cyclical slowdown driven by the absence of strong catalysts to propel sales and earnings to new highs.
The research house's top sector pick is Sime Darby Bhd given its strategic positioning to weather the impact of the impending subsidy rationalisation for RON95 fuel and its exposure to Perodua, Malaysia's most popular car brand.
Kenanga Research's top picks are MBM Resources Bhd and Hong Leong Industries Bhd , with an 'overweight' call on the sector.
The research house said its TIV forecast for this year of 805,000 units will be driven by forward buying interest on the deferment of new excise duty regulations to the end of this year.
It expects Perodua to benefit the most, at 44% TIV market share with the highest localisation rate that could have resulted in prices of locally assembled vehicles increasing by 10% to 30% under the new excise duty calculations, as well as attractive new launches such as a Perodua hybrid, Perodua electric vehicle (EV) and all-new Perodua Myvi.
The expectations was also backed by higher household incomes, with the salary hike for government servants last December , higher minimum wages starting February this year, and a stable labour market.
The same cannot be said for the premium segment, as the target customers, for instance the upper-tier M40 and T15 groups, may hold back from buying new cars, trade down to smaller cars or switch to hybrids and EVs to cut their fuel bills upon the introduction of fuel subsidy rationalisation.
The research house said there are more electric vehicles EVs in the market, and vehicle sales will also be supported by new EVs that enjoy sales and service tax exemption and other EV incentives up until the end of this year for completely built-up vehicles and 2027 for completely knock down models.
TA Research maintained its 'neutral' call on the sector and reiterated its TIV forecast of 700,000 for this year.
It maintained a 'sell' on MBM Resources and Bermaz Auto Bhd , while Sime was still rated as a 'hold'.

S P Setia to rebound on upcoming launches

PETALING JAYA: Despite mixed reactions to S P Setia Bhd's financial results for the first quarter of financial year ended March 31, (1Q25), there is broad consensus the property developer is poised to perform better from 2Q25 onwards, driven by more property launches. Analysts who met with the company's management following the release of the 1Q25 results noted that, while views were mixed, upcoming quarters are expected to show improvement. RHB Research, which maintained a 'buy' call on the stock with an unchanged target price of RM1.72 a share, said earnings missed expectations due to slower property launches and sales, resulting in a muted quarter. The research house said the bulk of S P Setia's property launches are scheduled for the next two quarters. Earnings are expected to improve from sales of industrial land in Setia Alaman in Selangor, the recognition of land sales in Taman Pelangi, Johor, and newly launched projects in Australia and Vietnam. Meanwhile, MIDF Research kept a 'neutral' call on the stock and revised its target price to RM1.17 from RM1.21. The research house said management remains committed to achieving a new sales target of RM4.8bil on the back of the planned launch of RM5.1bil worth of property developments and RM300mil in industrial properties.

Global condom market growth lifts Karex's outlook

PETALING JAYA: Analysts expect the global condom market to grow faster than the global economy, driven by rising sexual health awareness, a shift from government to private sector procurement and greater eCommerce adoption. This is expected to bode well for condom maker Karex Bhd , said Kenanga Research. 'This trend favours large, innovative manufacturers like Karex, which is well-positioned to capture more market share, high-value condom and lubricant orders through its diverse product portfolio, regulatory reach, and strong environmental, social and governance credentials. 'While near-term sales may be affected by evolving tender commercial dynamics, the group sees medium-term growth opportunities – particularly its higher margin synthetic condoms and lubricant products, which are gaining traction in key markets.' For its third quarter of financial year ended March 31, 2025 (3Q25), Karex's net profit dipped to RM5.09mil from RM6.02mil in the previous corresponding quarter, while revenue improved to RM135.72mil from RM127.05mil a year earlier. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Karex said the higher revenue was primarily due to stronger sales of both condoms and personal lubricants during the quarter. 'Despite the increase in sales, the implementation of minimum wage increases in Thailand and Malaysia, heightened logistics costs stemming from trade disputes and less favourable foreign-exchange rate movements resulted in a decrease in profitability. 'As a result, the 3Q25 profit before tax of RM6.6mil represented a decrease of RM1.7mil in comparison to the corresponding quarter in the previous financial year,' it said. For the nine-month period of financial year ended March 31, 2025 (9M25), Karex's net profit dropped to RM9.67mil from RM18.6mil, while revenue fell to RM377.63mil from RM383.93mil a year ago. Kenanga Research said 9M25 net profit fell short of expectations, accounting for only 47% of its forecast and 52% of consensus estimates. 'A five sen dividend was declared for the quarter, unchanged year-on-year.' Despite the improved outlook, the research house lowered the company's financial year 2025 (FY25) and FY26 net profit forecasts by 32% and 16%, respectively, to RM14mil and RM38mil after incorporating the weak 3Q25 results. It also reduced its margin assumptions to align with the prevailing trends. Correspondingly, it lowered its target price by 16% to 90 sen from RM1.07 previously, with an unchanged targeted FY26 price-to-earnings ratio (PER) of 25 times. 'This represents a 20% premium to the average historical five-year forward PER of its international peers to reflect its dominant market position and strong growth prospects.'
