Shane Warne's son reveals the cheeky restaurant move his cricket legend dad pulled - and every Aussie wishes they could do it

Daily Mail6 hours ago
The late, great Shane Warne built a career on confusing opposition batters, but his son Jackson has now revealed how he also confused plenty of diners in his time with a very cheeky act.
Warne was well-known for having surprisingly simple and childlike food preferences.
He often admitted he never ate vegetables and avoided most fruits entirely.
His favourite meals were typically fast food staples like pizza, pasta and bacon sandwiches.
Warne famously loved spaghetti bolognese, especially when cooked with extra cheese and no greens in sight.
He had a notorious sweet tooth, enjoying chocolate, ice cream and lollies over any gourmet dessert.
The 'sheikh of tweak' once had baked beans shipped to India because he refused to try the local cuisine during a cricket tour
The cricket legend was a big fan of baked beans on toast as a comfort food.
Warne even had cans of baked beans shipped in to satisfy his picky tastes when he toured India with the Australian Test team.
He admitted he struggled with local cuisine and preferred sticking to his familiar comfort food.
Warne avoided seafood altogether, once saying he couldn't stand the smell or texture of fish.
The cricket icon's breakfast of choice was often bacon and eggs with white toast - and certainly no avocado or salad.
Warne's friends often joked that his diet resembled that of a teenager rather than a sporting giant.
Now it can be revealed just how opposed to gourmet cuisine the great leggie was, with his son Jackson exposing how his famous dad used to order takeaway pizzas to Melbourne's finest restaurants.
'You know [Japanese restaurant] Nobu and Rockpool at Crown?' Jackson said on the Life of Brian Podcast.
The cricket star would happily sit on a park bench, finishing his pizza with a cigarette in hand, rather than sit inside and eat fine food at eateries like Nobu in Melbourne (pictured)
Warne's food habits became part of his larrikin legend, proving he stayed true to himself off the field no matter how famous he became
'There has been multiple times where he would have an important meeting or catching up with people there for dinner.
'He would go to the restaurants - he knew he wasn't going to eat anything - he would be looking at the menu [and saying], "I don't eat steak, these fish and oysters, no thanks, not for me".
'So 40 minutes later, there would be a pizza from Gradi, just around the corner.
'He would be eating a pizza from a different restaurant in one of the restaurants there.'
There was even a time when Warnie got kicked out for trying to pull the stunt at a fancy eatery.
Daily Mail previously revealed he was at a dinner with media and cricket commentators at one of Melbourne's best restaurants when he waved the waiter away as he took everyone's orders.
'No thanks mate,' he said. 'I'm right.'
Sure enough, a pizza delivery person soon arrived and Warnie started tucking into the meal right there at the table.
'I'm very sorry Mr Warne,' the maître d' said. 'But you can't eat that here.'
'Oh, OK, no worries,' Warnie replied.
He took his pizza out to a nearby bench, finished it off and had a cigarette for dessert.
Aussie pace bowler Brett Lee has also confirmed that Warnie loved ordering pizza to flash restaurants.
'I remember going to that famous Japanese restaurant Nobu, and Warnie ordered in a margherita pizza,' Lee said on the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast.
'Warnie only ever ate his baked beans, cheese on toast, he liked lasagna, spaghetti bolognese and margherita pizzas.
'We were going to one of the best restaurants in the world and Warnie, just being Warnie, decided to order margherita pizza.

Football transfer rumours: Spurs in for Savinho? Wissa to Liverpool?

It's been at least 13 minutes since Chelsea bought a player they don't need and withdrawal symptoms are biting hard. As such, they've begun talks with RB Leipzig, the idea being to swap Christopher Nkunku and cash for Xavi Simons. Though presumably the deal wouldn't actually be a swap, rather 793 separate deals payable over 32,321 years with the players valued at knockdown prices of £9065m and £19324m, respectively. Nor will that be it. No squad is complete without someone who scores few and creates fewer, so Enzo Maresca is also keen to add Alejandro Garnacho to his squad. Leipzig, meanwhile, would like to acquire Harvey Elliott from Liverpool, who reportedly rejected a move to Nottingham Forest as he does not think they suit his playing style – they must've expected him to start rather than hang about as sub. Rather, he is said to favour a move to Serie A instead: the golden era of Harvelissimo may be just a few short weeks away. Chelsea are, though, also looking to sell – most particularly Nicolas Jackson. Newcastle, having been rejected by Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike, Ian Ormondroyd, Liam Delap, Ian Olney, João Pedro, Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney and Peter Davey, seem most interested in the striker who cannot strike; the player himself seemingly prefers Alloa Athletic, San Marino Academy and Wormwood Scrubs Reserves. But if all else fails and given how much the Gallowgate loves a No 9, the romantic thrill of following Hughie Gallagher, Wor Jackie, Supermac, Coley, Sir Les and Alan Shearer means he'll instead accept whatever he can find that isn't that, but if that's all he can find, then that's what he'll do. Similarly, Randal Kolo Muani, another centre-forward target, would rather join Juventus, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, while Liverpool are keeping an eye on Yoane Wissa, whom they might take should they fail to relieve Newcastle of Alexander Isak. Quite why and how all these players have failed to be dazzled by Eddie Howe remains a mystery, but here we are. In other striker news, Ruben Amorim has packed Rasmus Højlund's bags, put his house on the market and booked him a one-way to ticket Anywhere But Here; Højlund retains every confidence he will soon be Manchester United's first choice. However, should his manager remain unseduced by his preference for wrestling defenders to scoring goals, Milan are interested; they'd like a loan with an option to buy, whereas United just want shot of the shot-shy. They are, though, considering taking Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer. The out-of-contract player has reportedly dismissed his agent to negotiate his own deal, which makes sense if you consider how much spare time he has, while 13 seconds of persistence appears to have worn down Jack Grealish – he's agreed to join the Toffees on loan from Manchester City, who are also trying to shift Savinho to Spurs. Otherwise, Régis Le Bris appears to be the only person in England who has heard of Lloyd Kelly. He fancies bringing the 26-year-old defender – who recently joined Juventus on a loan-with-an-obligation-to-buy deal from Newcastle – to Sunderland, should the clubs be able to strike a deal. The absence of Harvelissimo is a factor not believed to be a factor operative in their decision-making process.

'Superb' Wareham 'did Exeter number nine shirt proud'

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has hailed Jayden Wareham's goalscoring home debut as a "superb" 22-year-old, who was a summer signing from Reading, scored City's third goal having set up the first in Saturday's 4-1 win over performance was even more poignant, coming the day before the 15th anniversary of the death of former Exeter striker Adam became just the third player to wear Exeter's number nine shirt since Stansfield's death from cancer in 2010 and the first since his son Jay wore the number during a loan spell three years ago."I think the goal was a bonus, I think the performance was superb," Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon."How he led the line, how he held the ball up, the work he put in for the team in and out of possession he was a tireless runner."The big thing I said to him when the the discussions started about getting the shirt was he said he wants it, as a number nine scores goals."I said 'I agree, but if you take this shirt then you'll be judged on your work rate and the way you play for the team' and I think he did the number proud." There was also a rare goal for homegrown striker Sonny Cox as he came off the bench to get the fourth goal in the last minute of the win at St James was Cox's first goal for City since the start of March and Caldwell says it capped off an impressive few weeks for the 20-year-old."I think Sonny's been superb in pre-season, a little bit unlucky not to to be in the team today," Caldwell said."But he's a really good player to have on the bench to come on, whether it's a nine or a 10, he's fantastic out of possession and again delighted for him."That's the minimum, the goal then becomes a little bonus for him and will do his confidence really good, but he's in a very good place as well and hopefully he can kick on from that."

Chelsea wonderkid Reggie Walsh, 16, goes head-to-head with Luka Modric, 39, just days before getting GCSE results

REGGIE WALSH is the latest young superstar to have emerged from the Chelsea academy - and he went toe-to-toe with a legend on Sunday. Born in October 2008, the midfielder made his debut for the Blues in the Conference League semi-final first leg against Djurgardens last season. 3 He came off the bench late in the clash for a two-minute cameo, becoming the third-youngest Chelsea first-team player ever behind Ian Hamilton and Kingsley Whiffen. Walsh then became the club's youngest-ever European starter the following week in the second leg. He was named in the line-up alongside the likes of Reece James Jadon Sancho and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at Stamford Bridge. The 16-year-old was preparing for his GCSEs when he made his full debut. At the time, head coach Enzo Maresca said: "His talent is very good. Technique is fantastic. I really like him. Between the lines is good, you can see immediately he has something. "For sure at 17, 18, he needs to work hard and continue. I like also the personality, he's worked with us during the season. "He's not shy, he's asking for the ball, he's shouting and talking. I like it, he's a good player." Walsh missed out on a place in Chelsea's travelling Club World Cup squad earlier this summer. But he was handed some minutes during the club's final pre-season friendly against AC Milan on Sunday. The teenager shared the pitch with Real Madrid icon and six-time Champions League winner Luka Modric, who is 23 years older than him, during the 4-1 win. Chelsea star Jorgenson pranks team-mate on live TV after Bayer Leverkusen clash as even Cole Palmer won't take trophy 3 It came just 11 days before he is due to receive his GCSE results. Due to his age, Walsh is currently unable to sign a professional contract. He will likely pen his first pro deal when he turns 17 in October. Walsh joined Chelsea at the age of seven and progressed through the age groups before making his first-team debut last season. He spent much of the 2024-25 campaign playing for the Under-18s. The midfielder scored four goals and provided two assists for the U18s last term. He has also made 11 appearances for England at youth level.
