2 cops killed in Srinagar road accident
Officials said that the three sub-inspectors were travelling in a car when it hit a road divider near Tengan, Nowgam in Srinagar killing Sachin Verma and Shubham Seth.
Verma and Seth were declared dead at a hospital.
The injured officer has been identified as Mastan Singh who is recuperating at the hospital.
'They were travelling from Srinagar to Jammu after performing Amarnath Yatra duty when the accident happened,' said an official.
Lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the death of PSI Sachin Verma of 23 Bn IRP and PSI Shubam Seth of 21 Bn IRP in the tragic road accident in Nowgam area of Srinagar.
'Anguished by the tragic road accident in Nowgam, Srinagar. It is deeply saddening that two PSIs Sachin Verma and Shubam Seth have lost their lives. We will never forget their exemplary service to the nation. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The nation stands firm with them during this hour of grief,' the LG said.
Peoples Democratic Party presiden Mehbooba Mufti also condoled the loss of two police officers. 'Deeply saddened by the tragic and untimely loss of two brave police officers, Sachin Verma and Shubham, who lost their lives in a devastating car accident. May God grant their families the strength and courage to endure this unimaginable pain. My thoughts and prayers are with them in this moment of profound grief,' she said on X.

5 days after car snatching in Mullanpur, one arrested, another on run
Five days after a car was robbed at knifepoint at a petrol pump in Mullanpur, police have arrested a man, allegedly a habitual offender, while another accused remains on the run. The accused were identified as Sukhwinder Singh, alias Sukha, resident of Khizrabad, and Gurinder, a resident of Mianpur Changar, Mohali. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) The incident had taken place on August 7 when the victim, Satya, had gone to refuel his CNG car. Two men arrived on a motorcycle and attempted to forcibly snatch his vehicle. When Satya resisted, the assailants threatened him with a knife, forcing him to hand over the keys. The duo then fled in the stolen car. The accused were identified as Sukhwinder Singh, alias Sukha, resident of Khizrabad, and Gurinder, a resident of Mianpur Changar, Mohali. Both have previous cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. 'The accused are habitual offenders with a criminal record. Gurinder Singh has been arrested, while Sukhwinder Singh is absconding and efforts are underway to nab him,' said Mullanpur SP Mohit Aggarwal. The stolen vehicle has been recovered and the accused have been booked under Sections 309(4), 115(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Kajheri man gets 20-year jail for rape of minor
A Kajheri resident has been awarded 20 years jail for raping and impregnating a 14-year-old girl in 2022. The district legal services authority has been directed to pay ₹4 lakh compensation to the victim. The minor had given birth to a baby girl. As per the prosecution, the convict, a resident of Sector-52, Kajheri village, knew the victim and had taken her to the forest area on the pretext of a walk, in November 2022. There, he raped her and threatened her of dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone. On August 29, 2023, when the victim complained of stomach pain, her mother took her to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector-16, for treatment. There, the doctors confirmed that the victim was pregnant. After this, a complaint was lodged with the police, on the basis of which the accused was arrested. While passing the order, the court stated that courts are required to be sensitive towards the silent cries of the society and a balance has to be struck between the rights of the accused/convict and the cries of the prosecutrix/victim. 'In the present case, the accused had shown his wicked and evil mind by subjecting a minor victim to penetrative sexual assault. He is liable to be punished sternly,' the court observed. The court convicted the accused under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, which provides for punishment greater in degree as prescribed under provision of Sections 376(3) (rape) of the Indian Penal Code. He was also found guilty under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) for threatening the victim.
