
'Turn crop waste into SAF'

Promoting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production can help Pakistan boost national energy security, large-scale economic activity, and foreign direct investment while reducing crop waste and air pollution, economic and energy experts and environmental activists said.
They said that Pakistan is uniquely positioned to harness its abundant agricultural resources and establish itself as a key player in SAF production. By leveraging its vast agricultural base, the country can simultaneously address four critical challenges: enhancing national energy security, stimulating large-scale economic activity, attracting foreign direct investment, and mitigating crop waste and the air pollution caused by its burning.
Speaking with The Express Tribune, they said that globally, nations across various industrial sectors are striving to reduce emissions, and the aviation industry is no exception. As efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of air travel gain momentum, sustainable aviation fuel is emerging as a transformative solution.
They noted that with mandates in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK), along with the United States' strategic initiatives driving SAF adoption, Pakistan can capitalise on SAF production while repurposing its crop residues. With global aviation fuel demand exceeding 250 million metric tonnes annually, the shift to SAF presents both a monumental challenge and a transformative opportunity.
SAF is a renewable, low-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel, produced from sustainable feedstocks such as waste oils, agricultural residues, and non-food biomass.
Commercially, two key technologies dominate SAF production: Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) and Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ). The selection of technology depends on the type of biomass available for SAF production. HEFA technology is utilised for lipid-based feedstocks, such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and non-edible vegetable oils, while ATJ technology is best suited for sugar-based feedstocks, such as wheat straw, rice husks, and bagasse waste.
SAF produced through these two technologies provides a "drop-in" fuel that is fully compatible with existing jet engines and infrastructure. An emerging and highly promising third technology involves utilising carbon dioxide as a feedstock, though it is not yet commercially available.
Eminent energy scientist and expert in a circular economy Dr Adeel Ghayur said that commercial SAF technologies offer production capacities ranging from 100,000 tonnes to as much as one million tonnes annually.
He explained that refineries on the higher end of this spectrum require multibillion-dollar investments but have the potential to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boosting economic activity in their regions.
He noted that currently, SAF is priced at approximately $2,500 per metric tonne, significantly higher than conventional aviation fuel, which costs around $700 per metric tonne.
As the international community tightens its regulatory frameworks for sustainable aviation, Pakistan is presented with a unique window of opportunity that represents both an environmental imperative and a tremendous economic prospect.
Crop residues burned during both winter and summer in Pakistan represent an underutilised resource with immense potential for SAF production. In Punjab alone, it is estimated that millions of tonnes of rice residue are burned each winter to prepare fields for the next planting season. Furthermore, additional crop residues become available during the wheat harvest. Together, these biomass resources hold the capacity to support the establishment of multiple SAF refineries, transforming a major environmental challenge into an economic and ecological opportunity.
He said, "The starting point for Pakistan's SAF transformation lies in developing a well-rounded, multipronged strategy focused on attracting foreign investment, equipping local industries with the necessary knowledge, infrastructure, and skills, and fostering the development of robust indigenous research and development (R&D) capabilities. Strengthening R&D is essential for Pakistan to remain competitive in the global SAF market, secure its position as a hub for innovation, and maintain leadership as SAF adoption rises across Asia. This comprehensive policy roadmap will serve as both a blueprint and a catalyst to propel Pakistan to the forefront of the global SAF revolution."

India removes import duty on cotton in temporary relief for garment industry
NEW DELHI: India has exempted import duties on cotton from August 19 to September 30, fulfilling the demand of industry groups who said exemptions would help make the sector more competitive. The temporary suspension of the duty, announced in a government order late on Monday, is seen as a relief for India's garment industry, which is reeling from a steep 50% tariff on shipments to the United States. The US tariff comprises an existing 25% levy and an additional 25% set to take effect later this month, imposed as a penalty for India's purchases of Russian oil. The effective rate compares unfavourably with 20% for Bangladesh and Vietnam, and 30% for China. Industry bodies such as the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) had urged the government to scrap the cotton import duty to help make the sector more competitive. Before the exemption, cotton imports were subject to an 11% duty. Industry officials now expect the government to extend duty-free cotton imports beyond September. Reuters earlier reported that some Indian exporters were scrambling to explore manufacturing options overseas to offset the impact of the higher tariffs. India's garment sector was already grappling with a labour crunch and limited production capacity. The prospect of exporters relocating production abroad poses a further challenge to the government's 'Make in India' manufacturing drive. India curbs solar power output to keep grid stable amid low demand, ministry says
SINGAPORE/NEW DELHI: India is curbing solar output during periods of low demand to keep its power grid stable and to ease congestion in power lines as green energy supply rises, its Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) told Reuters. Congestion in power lines due to some new plants coming into operation ahead of schedule and delayed transmission projects have also forced power output curbs, also known as curtailment, the MNRE said in an emailed response to questions late on Monday. The curtailments are the latest setback to India's renewable power developers, who are increasingly languishing without supply contracts as demand for power slows. The National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) said in a July 24 letter to the ministry that solar power producers in Rajasthan, the top green power producing state, were facing prolonged and frequent curtailments, which had risen to 48% of output during peak generation hours. The producers have lost more than $26 million in revenue since April due to the curbs, NSEFI said in the letter reviewed by Reuters. NSEFI, whose members include the green energy arms of Indian conglomerates Adani and Tata, Amazon Web Services, Dutch investment firm SHV and Malaysia's Gentari, said curtailments undermined project viability and future investments. 'Projects in the state had been deferred by 18-20 months to accommodate for the delays in the transmission system, but are still unable to be commissioned due to even further delays,' NSEFI said. There's a need to strike a fair balance between solar and grid users NSEFI has asked the government to accelerate transmission and battery storage projects, some of which face up to two years of delay. The federal power ministry has said it is fast-tracking interstate transmission lines to support renewable energy. Beyond Rajasthan While Rajasthan is the worst affected by curtailments, other major green energy producers such as the southern Tamil Nadu state, and Gujarat and Maharashtra in the west are also curbing output, according to four industry officials and analysts. Data compiled by Tamil Nadu's Renewable Energy Producers Association showed solar output was 10% lower than forecast in the quarter ended June. J Radhakrishnan, a spokesman for the Tamil Nadu energy department said solar was being curbed as a 'last resort' measure, and that coal power was also being curtailed amid low demand. India's renewable energy generation, mainly solar, rose at a record pace in the six months ended June as previously awarded projects came online, while overall power generation growth was largely flat compared with an increase of nearly 6% in 2024. However, solar projects awarded in the three months ended June fell 75% annually and tenders for new projects declined 65%, according to clean energy consultancy Mercom. The decline reflects a 'temporary recalibration rather than a slowdown,' MNRE said, adding that bids were being issued in line with national targets and demand. Government data shows the usage rate of solar capacity fell to 21.4% in May and 19.5% in June. The MNRE said some of it was due to lower irradiance, adding it expected capacity utilisation of 21%–25% range from February to June in the future.

KSE-100 index rising 1,006.96 points to reach the current index of 149,203.38 during intra-day trading as compared to the previous close of 148,196.42. During the session, the index hit a high of 149,367.31 and a low of 148,293.94. Trading volume stood at 105.68 million shares, while the value of transactions reached Rs10.77 billion. The market registered a 0.68% increase, reflecting continued investor confidence. Earlier on Monday, the KSE-100 index recorded an increase of 1,704.79 points, or 1.16%, and settled at 148,196.42. According to Topline Securities, bulls staged a strong comeback in Monday's trading session, with the KSE-100 index surging 1,904 points intra-day before closing at an all-time high of 148,196, up 1,705 points. Market sentiment brightened on reports of the government's circular debt reform drive, which entails reducing liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes, revising RLNG pricing and mobilising funds from savings through LNG diversion, state-owned enterprises' dividends and power sector receivables, it said. Fitch expects lower interest rates, better credit growth and reduced reliance on public-sector lending to benefit banks JS Global analyst Muhammad Hasan Ather said that the KSE-100 index surged 1.2% to close at a record high, driven by strong corporate earnings, improved macroeconomic indicators and expectations of favourable inflation data. WorldCall Telecom was the volume leader with trading in 40.7 million shares, falling Rs0.01 to close at Rs1.40. It was followed by Pervez Ahmed Consultancy with 29.8 million shares, gaining Rs0.18 to close at Rs2.82 and Al-Shaheer Corporation with 26.4 million shares, gaining Rs0.52 to close at Rs12.24. Foreign investors sold shares worth Rs625 million, the National Clearing Company reported.
