Staffordshire Police officer charged with sexual assault

A police officer has appeared in court charged with sexual assault.Alex Trusler, of Burntwood, Staffordshire, has been accused of nine counts of sexually assaulting a woman, which were alleged to have happened in 2022 and 2023.The 35-year-old was suspended from Staffordshire Police in September 2023 when the allegations were reported and the charges followed an investigation by the force's professional standards department, a spokesperson said.Mr Trusler appeared at Cannock Magistrates' Court on Friday and is due to appear at Stafford Crown Court on 13 June.

A spokesman for Scottish Labour said: 'The whip has been removed from Colin Smyth MSP, pending an investigation. 'We cannot comment further on this matter while the investigation is ongoing.' It is understood the MSP was administratively suspended by Labour after the party became aware of the police investigation.
