JI to hold rallies for Kashmir, Palestine
KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan announced that protests, rallies, and demonstrations will be held across the city on August 5 to mark 'Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir' in solidarity with the people of Kashmir and Palestine. He was addressing a press conference at the party's headquarters, Idara Noor-e-Haq on Friday Monem Zafar condemned the Indian government's abrogation of Article 370 and equated the actions of India in Kashmir and Israel in Gaza, criticizing the global silence over the humanitarian crises in both regions. He particularly called out the Muslim world for failing to take a firm stand against the use of starvation as a weapon in Gaza, where he said over 60,000 civilians had been killed and many more were now dying of hunger. He criticized the Sindh government for failing to act, accusing it of focusing on revenue collection through vehicle number plates while ignoring its basic duties. He demanded the government issue number plates free of cost, noting that citizens had already paid for them. He said the administration had lost its writ in Karachi, pointing to poor services, broken infrastructure, and lack of clean water and electricity. He also questioned the Pakistan Peoples Party's claims about building 800,000 houses for flood victims, calling for transparency and urging clarity on the K4 water project's funding shortfall. Photo: AFP Listen to article President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy visited a US-backed aid operation in Gaza on Friday, which the United Nations has partly blamed for deadly conditions in the enclave, saying he sought to get food and other aid to people there. Steve Witkoff visited a site run by the US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Rafah. Humanitarian organisations and many foreign governments have been strongly critical of the GHF, which began operations in late May. Hours after Witkoff's visit, Palestinian medics reported Israeli forces shot dead three Palestinians near one of the group's sites in the city on Gaza's southern edge. The Israeli military said it was still looking into the incident in which soldiers fired shots at as a "gathering of suspects" approaching its troops. The United Nations says more than 1,000 people have been killed trying to receive aid in Gaza since the GHF began operating, most of them shot by Israeli forces operating near GHF sites. The UN has declined to work with the GHF, which it says distributes aid in ways that are inherently dangerous. Crafting plan US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who travelled with Witkoff to Gaza on Friday, posted on X a picture showing hungry Gazans behind razor wire with a GHF poster displaying a big American flag and the words "100,000,000 meals delivered". "President Trump understands the stakes in Gaza and that feeding civilians, not Hamas, must be the priority," GHF spokesperson Chapin Fay said.

Trump wants Central Asian nations into Abraham Accords

Photo: Reuters Listen to article President Donald Trump's administration is actively discussing with Azerbaijan the possibility of bringing that nation and some Central Asian allies into the Abraham Accords, hoping to deepen their existing ties with Israel, according to five sources with knowledge of the matter. Azerbaijan and every country in Central Asia, by contrast, already have longstanding relations with Israel, meaning that an expansion of the accords to include them would largely be symbolic, focusing on strengthening ties in areas like trade and military cooperation, they said. The original Abraham Accords, inked between Israel and the four Muslim majority countries in the Middle East and Africa in 2020 and 2021 during Trump's first term in office, centred on normalising diplomatic relations with Israel after US mediation. However, a soaring death toll in Gaza and starvation in the enclave due to blockade of aid and military operations by Israel have buoyed Arab fury, complicating Trump's efforts to add more Muslim-majority countries to the Abraham Accords. The war in Gaza, where over 60,000 people including tens of thousands of women and children have died, has provoked global anger. Canada, France and the United Kingdom have announced plans in recent days to recognise an independent Palestine. Another key sticking point is Azerbaijan's conflict with its neighbour Armenia, since the Trump administration considers a peace deal between the two Caucasus nations as a precondition to join the Abraham Accords, three sources said. While Trump officials have publicly floated several potential entrants into the accords, the talks centred on Azerbaijan are among the most structured and serious, the sources said. Two of the sources argued a deal could be reached within months or even weeks. Trump's special envoy for peace missions, Steve Witkoff, travelled to Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, in March to meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. A key Witkoff aide, Aryeh Lightstone also met Aliyev later in the spring in part to discuss the Abraham Accords, three of the sources said. As part of the discussions, Azerbaijani officials have contacted officials in Central Asian nations, including in nearby Kazakhstan, to gauge their interest in a broader Abraham Accords expansion, those sources said.
