Women's Euro 2025 final: Live updates, highlights as Spain, England head for 2023 World Cup rematch

Yahoo5 days ago
On Sunday, the 2025 Women's Euro will come to an end, as England and Spain battle for the championship. The two European powerhouses will fight for the title to cap off a thrilling, dramatic tournament in Switzerland.
For England, Sunday's final marks an opportunity to defend its 2022 Euro victory — the first major trophy for England in more than 50 years, for both the men's and women's sides. But it's also a chance for revenge, two years after La Roja beat the Lionesses in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
England did not have a straightforward path to this final, notching extra-time comeback wins in both the quarterfinal against Sweden and in the semifinal against Italy. 19-year-old forward Michelle Agyemang has been the Lionesses' hero in both of these games, scoring late equalizers in both games to keep England's title defense alive.
Spain, meanwhile, has looked dominant all tournament, cruising through the group stage to the knockout stage. After a strong win over Switzerland, Spain advanced to the final by defeating Germany in the semis, off an extra-time strike from reigning Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí. La Roja is currently ranked No. 2 in the FIFA rankings, behind the United States; a Euro win could push them into the top spot.
In the recent past, England-Spain matches have been low-scoring battles. The two teams faced off twice during the group stage of the UEFA Nations League in February; England won the first game 1-0, but Spain took the second 2-1. Prior to those games, the two countries had not faced off since the World Cup, with Spain's Olga Carmona scoring the sole goal in that contest.
Now, England and Spain will play again, with a major title on the line.

India hires Khalid Jamil as new head coach after Xavi and Pep Guardiola hoax applications

NEW DELHI (AP) — After discarding hoax applications from Xavi and Pep Guardiola, the All India Football Federation hired Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the national team on Friday. The AIFF admitted last week that proposed candidacies received from former Barcelona coach Xavi and Manchester City manager Guardiola, which had been disclosed to domestic media two days earlier, were not genuine. Instead, Jamil, one of more than 170 real applicants to coach India, is the first domestic coach to take the position for 13 years and succeeds Manolo Marquez after the Spaniard departed in July after 11 months and just one win. Jamil has won India's top league prize as a player, in 2005, and also as head coach of Aizawl FC in 2017. The 49-year-old took over Indian Super League club Jamshedpur in 2023, taking it to the final of the 2025 Super Cup. The AIFF said in a statement that committee members Shabbir Ali and Armando Colaco had pushed for a local candidate from a three-man shortlist -- that also contained Stephen Constantine, the British coach with two previous spells in charge of India, as well as Slovenia's Stefan Tarkovic -- in a bid to give Indian coaching a boost. Jamil's major task is to recover from a poor start in qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup, which saw India, ranked No. 133 in the world, collect just one point from the opening two games in its quest to make a third successive appearance at the quadrennial tournament. Only the winner of the four-team group will advance to Saudi Arabia. Qualification resumes in October. ___ AP soccer:

England bowler Chris Woakes to miss rest of England-India test with shoulder injury

LONDON (AP) — England seamer Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the rest of the fifth and final test against India after injuring his shoulder. Woakes slipped and fell awkwardly while fielding on the first day of the test Thursday at the Oval and left the field in pain with his arm tucked into his sweater for support, like a sling. His injury leaves England short of a fast bowler and a very useful lower-order batter. 'At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the test,' a team statement said Friday. 'A further assessment will be conducted at the conclusion of the series.' Woakes was by far England's most experienced fast bowler alongside Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue. He had played in all five tests of the series against India, which England leads 2-1. ___ AP cricket: The Associated Press
