Murwillumbah preview, tips: Ethan Ensby's Rainbow Lass chases hat-trick

In-form mare Rainbow Lass isn't just chasing a hat-trick of wins, she is on trial for a possible feature race target at next month's Grafton carnival.
Following two solid wins over 1000m and 1200m on her home track at Casino, trainer Ethan Ensby feels to time is right to test Rainbow Lass over a longer distance in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1550m).
'She is going enormous at the moment,' said Ensby.
'She is obviously stepping up to the 1500m for the first time and being by Pariah, she probably isn't bred to get that far but at home, my partner rides her work and she is showing us she is that 1400m to a mile type.
'She sat three-wide working up the hill at Casino over the 1200 metres last start which is like running 1300 or 1400 metres.

'She does like a wet track so the Soft 7 will suit her. My only concerns are the weight, she carriers 58.5kg after Izzy's (Neale) claim, and the gate if she happens to blow the start like she has been known to do.
'If she gets out and into a good position, she should be very competitive.
'If she happens to win this race, I might aim her at the Grafton Guineas.'
Ensby is looking forward to seeing Mahuika Maroi make her race debut in the Country Boosted Maiden Handicap (1200m).
The three-year-old has been safely beaten in both her barrier trials but Ensby said things didn't go as he'd hoped on either occasion.
'When she trialled at the Gold Coast, it was supposed to be on the B Grass but they switched to polytrack which I wasn't very happy about.
'I didn't want to trial on the poly but with the weather the way it was, she had to go around and use it as a bit of a gallop and hope for the best.
'She wasn't put under any pressure that day.
'We then went to Grafton for her next trial and she slipped coming out of the gates on the wet track and tweaked a muscle hence while it's been a while until her first start.
'She finds a really nice race start off in and although the 1200 metres will be short of her best, I think she will run a nice race with the expectation she will be better for it.'

Ensby has Shez Mysterious and Gold Puma in the Maiden Handicap (1550m) but is leaning towards splitting the pair and saving the later for either Port Macquarie or Lismore during the week.
Shez Mysterious failed on her home track on May 30 but Ensby feels it is worth forgetting that run and judge her on her first two starts.
The daughter of So You Think debuted with a fourth to Rainbow Lass on a Heavy 10 at Casino before coming from a conspicuous last when beaten just over a length in fourth place at Inverell on May 23.
'I think the heavy track and the quick back-up went against her last start. She just didn't handle it,' he said.
'I think it would pay to forgive her for that.
'I've given her a bit of time since then and the beauty of training at the farm is it allows me to put her out during the day.
'He first-up run at Casino was encouraging then second-up, she stood like a deer in the headlights in the barrier at Inverell and came out a clear last.
'She really closed of strongly though.
'I give her a really good chance with Ben Looker on board from barrier 1.'

Wasn't pushed when third to Olivershare on an unsuitable synthetic track in her Gold Coast trial. Bred to get over further.

Will be fitter for the run, appreciate a firmer track and can bounce back. HUMPHREE BEAR (2) missed the kick and was well back throughout first-up. Chance on Grafton win from Rainbow Lass.

SIGLO DE ORO (1) raced outside the leader and boxed on well for a two length fourth behind Make A Call when resuming over 1110m at Doomben. Back to 1010m and was beaten a nose at his only run at this trip. DARE TO LOVE (5) finished a half-length in front of Siglo De Oro when third in that Doomben race. Buffeted at start and worked early when seventh at Doomben last start. Will find this easier. MISS LINNY (7) will be better over further but can run well first-up.

He is unbeaten second-up including a win here on his home track. ALL ABOUT ARTIE (5) has had a long campaign which started with a win at Ipswich in January and he continues to race well. Was a three-quarter length third at Warwick two starts back before a half-length second to Monastery at Ballina. BETTER YET (4) drop sin grade from his win and fourth at Ipswich at his past two starts.

INSINUATE (3) recorded her maiden win over this track and distance in February. After a couple of unplaced Eagle Farm runs, dropped back to country grade with a big win at Casino followed by a third last start both over 1400m. RAINBOW LASS (5) was just pipped at Ballina before winning her next two starts nicely at Casino over 1000m and 1200m. Up to 1550m for the first time which is a query but her dam won up to 1600m so worth a try. CAPITAL BOSS (1) has claims on his Gold Coast two starts back.

LUCKY NEKO (11) was caught three-wide without cover when fifth to Ultimate Say at Grafton first-up. Jumped straight to the front and scored by over a length from Rock The Machine over 1400m at Casino last start. Drops back to 1200m but drawn well and gets a 2kg claim again. FLAME TREE STAR (3) resumes here and has placed in both first-up runs. Was beaten a short half head by Neil over 1100m fresh up last time in. SUPERZOOM (6) had a tough run at Warwick last start and has been freshened. Is a winner this track and distance.

Trainer Jason Coyle was relieved as Lulumon delivers in spectacular fashion at Randwick
Lulumon burst back to her best and denied Storm The Ramparts a hat-trick of Royal Randwick 1000m sprints wins on Saturday. Storm The Ramparts, burdened with 61.5kg, led until the final stride when collared by the fast-finishing Lulumon in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap. Trainer Jason Coyle was relieved to see Lulumon rebound after a disappointing run at Rosehill last start. 'We can put a line through that second-up run now as she is heading in the right direction,' Coyle said. 'We will find an 1100m race for her as she will still get that strong tempo so she can hit the line.' Lulumon ($4.40) certainly attacked the line with real gusto to reel in a very game Storm The Ramparts ($7) right on the line to win by a nose with Hi Dubai ($6) a short head away third. Coyle said there were various reasons for Lulumon's Rosehill flop and he anticipated the mare would return to the form that saw her win at the Gosford stand-alone meeting first-up when she also ran down Storm The Ramparts. 'At Rosehill, Lulumon didn't step well, she got her head up in the air and Alysha (Collett, jockey) said the mare hated the (heavy 8) surface,' Coyle said. 'So, we got her home, we reset and gave her three weeks between runs and it has worked out well. She's back on track. 'Mares that can win on Saturday a couple of times, you know there is a nice stakes race on the horizon.' Former Adelaide United player Ryan Tunnicliffe angry over alleged Reds' attempt to ‘force' his departure
Former Adelaide United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe has broken his silence on the 'disgraceful' way he was treated by the Reds, claiming the club deliberately attempted to break his 'resolve' and force him to leave. The 32-year-old Englishman's comments come on the back of revelations this week made by former Reds assistant coach Travis Dodd, and the subsequent way Tunnicliffe says they were 'downplayed' by club chief executive officer Nathan Kosmina. Dodd claimed in an interview with 7 News that Adelaide's technical director Ernest Faber was 'undermining' the club's recently departed coach Carl Veart during the Reds' 2024-25 campaign, including calling a 'secret meeting' with the squad's player leadership group to tell them that 'they could pick the team'. The report also claimed that Faber made Tunnicliffe train by himself for two weeks and undertake 'torturous running sessions'. 'Credit to him, for two weeks … he did what he was asked to do. Seemingly Ernest had enough after two weeks, and let him rejoin the first-team squad,' Dodd said. In a post on Saturday on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tunnicliffe said he wasn't going to comment out of 'respect for the team, the manager and his staff'. However, comments made by Kosmina to Channel 10 on Friday led to Tunnicliffe feeling 'compelled to respond'. 'Different players respond differently to different coaching techniques … that balance is always a tricky one,' Kosmina said. 'As for the so-called 'favourable' end-of-year player survey … this claim is entirely fabricated,' he said. Tunnicliffe said he was 'currently taking legal advice on the matter'. Professional Footballers Australia chief executive officer Beau Busch said Adelaide's alleged treatment of Tunnicliffe had breached the collective bargaining agreement. 'The practice of forcing players to train alone and excluding them from their team has no place in the A-League's and is a breach of the collective bargaining agreement,' Busch said. 'We are in contact with Ryan and the club. We will ensure Ryan is supported, and engage with the club to address the matter.' Busch is also set to meet with another departed Adelaide player, Josh Cavallo, who was also critical of the club, and the treatment he received from the Reds. 'Carl (Veart) was under clear instructions by the people above him (Ernest Faber) during pre-season that I wasn't allowed to step foot on the pitch … hence was I was sidelined fit for the entire season,' Cavallo said in a social media post this week. ‘Kidding ourselves': Debate erupts over AFL's plan to revive State of Origin

The AFL is in talks to revive State of Origin, but there are fears the proposed showdown would only be an 'exhibition game'. AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said earlier this year: 'I can't rule it in and I can't rule it out, but it will certainly be a conversation I'd like to have with the players and the clubs, 'There seems to be a bit of a groundswell for it.' It has now emerged that the WA government is in talks with the AFL to hold a State of Origin game in Perth during pre-season in the first week of February in 2026. WA deputy premier and sports minister Rita Saffioti said talks were in the early stages but the AFL is 'very keen' on the idea. 'It's not a done deal,' Saffioti said on Friday. 'But I know the AFL was very keen, and we're very keen. 'Everyone is very excited about having a WA State of Origin game in the AFL, there's some good discussions happening at the moment.' The game between the Fremantle Dockers and the Indigenous All Stars in February this year was considered a major success, and the AFL is considering holding a State of Origin match in a similar as soon as next season. But not everyone is a fan of the idea. Brian Taylor pointed out the hot conditions in Perth in February and noted team selection would be based on reputation instead of form if the match is held in pre-season. Taylor, who played for Victoria in a 1986 State of Origin game, said on Triple M: 'What are we trying to do here with State of Origin football, playing it in February? Do you know how hot it is in Perth in Feb? Dustin Martin (centre) was one of the big names to play for Victoria in the 2020 game against the All Stars. 'How many players are in form on the 6th of February? How are you picking the team? On the year before? 'It's about current form, it's about players playing well, like the All Australian — to achieve the status of getting selected in the side. 'I think this game is not going to work if it's in Feb. 'We currently have three byes currently in our season. Let's put one of those byes aside for a State of Origin weekend when the players have reached top form, halfway though or two thirds of the way through (a season).' NRL players earn $30,000 for each State of Origin earn match, and Taylor said a financial incentive may be required to get AFL players invested in the concept as a genuine competitive game. 'Let's give the players all of the gate, so a player could get $10,000 to $20,000 each per game,' Taylor said. 'Then they'll absolutely want to play.' He added: 'It has to be played mid-season, it has to be picked on form. Players are barely started their pre-season in the first week of Feb. 'Are we kidding ourselves? 'It's different, it's an exhibition game,' Montagna said on Triple M. 'You're probably still thinking of State of Origin in the 80s and 90s when it was South Australia vs Victoria and they were playing for keeps. Now it's more of an exhibition game. 'I'd love to see (Christian) Petracca in the same forward line as Toby Greene and Paddy Dangerfield and the Victorians play together. And I'm sure the other states would like to see their players play in their state jersey. 'It's just no longer going to be what it was like in the old days. It's an exhibition. You pick them (the teams) on reputation.' Taylor replied: 'Why do we need an exhibition game of our own game in our own country? People see 20 games a year. Photo: Michael Klein The last State of Origin match was between Victoria and South Australia in 1999, and it remains to be seen what state or amalgamation of states would take on Victoria if the concept is revived. 'We think this would be an incredible drawcard for the state,' WA deputy premier Rita Saffioti added. 'I know many of the players are actually excited, particularly those based over east, are very keen to play for their state, so I think there's a huge push from the players. 'Pre-season is a good time to do it, as opposed to in-season ... the clubs are already playing pre-season games,' Saffioti said. 'And we saw the Indigenous All Stars, we had some incredible players out there ... it makes a bit of sense to do it during February.'
